ABC’s OF DEATH

OMNIBUS EDITION

If you don’t already know your ABC’s (of

Death), now there’s no excuse with this

Omnibus Edition that collects both films in

the series together with some exclusive

new extras. The DVD and Blu-ray edition

has been cheekily (and appropriately?)

packaged in a 4-disc digipack designed

to resemble the beloved Golden Book

kids’ range – complete with gold-foiled

spine and incongruous (and removable)

R-rating! – so for god’s sake keep it out

of reach of children. Together with the

52 short films that comprise

ABC’s of

Death

Part 1 & 2, there’s a bonus disc of extras for each, with all-new special

features for Part 2. In addition to behind-the-scenes footage from selected shorts,

you get The Best of Monster Fest Shorts, showcasing the work of up and coming

filmmakers like Stu Simpson (

Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla

), Eugenia Muggleton,

Jarret Gahan, Ryan Coonan, David Jackson and Caitlin Koller. All up, a fantastic

package of bite-sized viewing that can snacked on at your leisure, or digested all

at once and vomited up later.

NEWS

EXTRAS

October is Halloween and

the Friday Fright Night

cinema line-up has ample

treats in store.

A firm fixture on the horror and cult

movie calendar, the Friday Fright Night

screenings continue to showcase the best

in new releases and classic favourites

on the big screens at the Lido and New

Farm Cinemas in Melbourne and Brisbane,

respectively. October’s programme includes

a cavalcade of canine carnage in the

homegrown horror

The Pack

(Oct 2 Melb,

Oct 9 Bris), which will feature a Q&A

with the filmmakers; the blackly comic

Bring Me the Head of the Machine

Gun Woman

(Oct 2 Bris, Oct 9 Melb);

Ted Geoghegan’s incredibly creepy ghost

story

We Are Still Here

(Oct 16), Ruggero

Deodato’s notoriously nasty

House on the

Edge of the Park

(Oct 23), and zombie

comedy

Cooties

(Oct 30). The best has

been saved for last, however, with Eli

Roth’s long delayed cannibal opus

The

Green Inferno

finally seeing the light of a

projector on Halloween Night, October 31.

EJECTA

Genre regular Julian Richings

(

Wrong Turn

,

Cube

) plays a man

still traumatised by a close

encounter of the third kind that

occurred 40 years ago during

a solar flare. Hounded by a

UFO documentarian, sinister

government agents (are there

any other kind?) and a ruthless doctor, Richings’ past

returns to haunt him on the eve of another solar flare.

The British actor’s cadaverous features are a perfect

fit for this moody and non-linear sci-fi horror flick.

BACKCOUNTRY

How much horror can you bear?

Wilderness thrillers are back in

style and hot on the trail of

Into

the Grizzly Maze

comes another

Canadian production that pits

a camping couple against a

belligerent black bear, not to

mention a creepy guide and a thieving raccoon.

Based on a true story and

set against the stunning

backdrop of the Canadian

backwoods, this battle for

survival packs a solid and

brutal punch.

FRIDAY NIGHT

FRIGHTS

WHITE SETTLERS

“Scotland’s a very friendly country” says one of the

characters in

White Settlers

, aka

The Blood Lands

,

but you’d never guess it from this UK horror-thriller. A

London couple relocate to the Scottish countryside and

take up residence in a farmhouse with a violent history.

Built on the site of “a ferocious battle between the

Scots and the English”, it takes a brave heart indeed

to survive the horror that’s unleashed

when a bunch of home invaders in

animal masks show up in the dead

of night. Starring Monster Pictures

favourite Pollyanna McIntosh (

The

Woman, Let Us Prey

), this slickly shot

exercise in terror and suspense is a

must-see for fans of

You’re Next

and

The Strangers

.
