better qualified solicitor to-day, than I was on the
day after my admission. O f course, that may not
be saying very much, but what I want to say is that
most o f the knowledge I have to-day has been
gained largely, if I may use a slang expression, by
picking the brains of my colleagues.
“ We, as professional brethren, owe a duty to
each other, and a great deal o f information can be
exchanged and assistance sought, without in any
way prejudicing or compromising the interests of
our clients. On the contrary, the more friendly
and helpful we are towards one another, the more
the clients gain.
“ Once again I congratulate you. May God bless
you and reward you.”

Payments Out in Minor Matters
F
ollowing
an interview with the Master o f the
High Court it has been arranged that in future
it will not be necessary to file an Affidavit in making
applications for payment out o f Court o f small
sums for necessaries such as clothing, etc., in minor
matters. It will be sufficient if the guardian attends
in person to give evidence. It is felt that this
arrangement will considerably simplify the procedure
in many cases.
It should be noted, however, that the foregoing
does not apply to applications for final discharge, in
which cases the procedure remains unchanged.
SOLICITOR’S COSTS—GROSS SUM
T
he
Court o f Appeal in England, on 30th April,
held that the delivery by a solicitor to his client
o f a bill for a gross sum, which included without
distinction amounts both for disbursements and
for his remuneration, was not authorised by tne
Solicitors’ Remuneration (Gross Sum) Order, 1934.
Their Lordships allowed the appeal and reversed
an order made by Mr. Justice Vaisey. The Solicitors’
Remuneration (Gross Sum) Order, 1934, corresponds
to our Solicitors’ Remuneration General Order (No.
2) 1920.
The appellant was one of the executors o f the
will o f his father, and the respondent was a member
o f the firm o f solicitors who had acted in the winding-
up o f the father’s estate. The solicitors had sent in
a bill for £733 for professional services and dis
bursements without giving details, and, in fact, a
sum o f about £20 was included in the £735 for
disbursements. The bill was in the form o f a
statement o f receipts and paymentg and, on balance
showed that £260 9s. 7d. was due to the solicitors.
At the time the appellant was satisfied, and he
accordingly paid the amount shown. Later he
acted as executor in the winding-up o f another estate,
