Media Studies

What skills will I learn?

Media studies explores our relationship with the media

and its impact on society. You will look at a variety

of media forms from print, film to the internet or

radio and engage in debates, case studies and do a

practical project. You could be creating a music video,

documentary, or shor t drama using professional editing

software. The subject can be both academic and

practical depending on the course you chose. You could

develop technical production skills, work in a team on a

project, do some research or write about media theories.

How do I get there?

You could study this at GCSE or A level or as BTEC

qualification. Media studies could lead you to a degree in

the subject or to study Media Production, Graphic Design,

Public Relations, Journalism, Animation, Film Studies,

Adver tising or even Marketing. Entry jobs a degree in Media

could lead to include; TV Runner, Programme Researcher,

Production Assistant or Presenter. The practical elements

of this course could lead to oppor tunities such as Sound

Engineer, Audio Visual Technician or Camera Operator. Why

not improve your skills by volunteering? You could look at

contacting your local theatre or community radio station.

You could work on the school magazine, write a blog or

create a YouTube channel of your own film productions.
