Game of Thrones

doesn’t have

a monopoly on dragons. This

sequel to the 2010 animated hit

is full of the flying, fire-breathing

critters, and they’re not all as

benevolent as trained dragon

Toothless. Set five years after

the events of the first film, Viking

dude Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) has

grown up and acquired a spirit

for adventure, much to the chagrin of his father (Gerard

Butler), who wants Hiccup to succeed him as the leader

of their clan. His travels take him to the frozen lair of

the Bewilderbeast, an alpha dragon trained by a “crazy

feral dragon lady” known as Valka (Cate Blanchett), who

joins forces with our hero against dragon hunter Drago

(Djimon Hounsou) and his pirate lackey Eret (GoT’s Kit

Harington), who plan to attack Hiccup’s village. Not just

the best animated feature this summer, HTTYD2 is the

perfect sequel – advancing the story and expanding the

mythology while retaining all the elements that made

the original something special.

“Do the same thing as last

time,” advises the splendidly

deadpan Nick Offerman to

his dimwitted detectives

Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko

(Channing Tatum), handing

them a new undercover

assignment for the Jump Street

unit. And it’s this constant

flow of knowing references

to Hollywood’s predilection

for sequels that makes this

hilarious follow-up to the hit

21 Jump Street

such a

blast. This time around, the duo go undercover at a

university to track down the source of a lethal new

drug called Whyfy – an assignment complicated by

Jenko’s newfound friendship with a fellow dumb jock,

who happens to be one of the prime suspects. Just

as they did with

The Lego Movie

, directors Phil Lord

and Christopher Miller deliver a constant barrage of

winning gags; you’ll probably need to watch this a

couple of times just to catch them all. And make sure

you stick around for the end credits, which cram in

references to around 20 more Jump Street movies

and a host of other spin-offs. • See page 22
