Following the War for Independence, black slaves

remained in bondage in America. By the outbreak of the

Civil War in 1861, 4 million slaves would be performing

forced labor on plantations in the Southern states.

In the years that followed, the abolitionist movement

slowly gained fervor, with Northerners calling for the

“All Men Are Created Equal”

The crowd at the battlefield at Gettysburg, where President Abraham

Lincoln delivered his famous address. Lincoln was in Gettysburg on

November 19, 1863, for the dedication of a cemetery for the soldiers

who had fallen at Gettysburg. He can be seen in this photo, circled in

white; he is bare-headed and facing the camera, to the left of the cen-
