Law Society Council Meeting
July, 1985
To mark the Cork 800 Celebrations the Law Society held its July Council Meeting in Cork City. In attendence at the City
Hall, Cork were (1. to r.) Mr. Raymond St.J. O'Neill, President of the Southern Law Association, Mr. Anthony E. Collins,
President of the Law Society, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Alderman Danny Wallace and Mr. Frank Daly, Solicitor, Cork,
(continued from page 195)
courses for all members of the Force at Garda rank
during their service, at regular intervals and has also
recommended that members of the Force maintain an
acceptable level of physical fitness during their service.
As far as officer recruitment and training is concerned,
the Society's submission sees no need for a separate
graduate entry programme, but calls for considerable
changes in the process of selection for promotion. At
Inspector and higher levels, further training programmes
should be essential prerequisites for promotion, rather
than a consequence of promotion. The selection boards
for promotion to senior officer level should not be
composed entirely of past or present senior officers.
Conservatism in outlook may be regarded as a virtue by
those who are of senior rank or have recently retired.
A greater commitment to structured training at all
levels within the Force should lead in a relatively short
space of time to a considerable improvement in
operations and morale.
