J

oel Curran’s musical tastes

are eclectic, but as soon

as he starts reeling off his

favourites of the last 12

months a definite Australian

vibe emerges. “The latest

Jagwar Ma [

Every Now &

Then

] I really liked, and SAFIA

as well,” he says.

At JB’s The Glen store on

classics, he can’t go past some

sassy brass. “I really love M83;

Hurry Up We're Dreaming

is

probably one of my favourites,

and their new album [

Junk

]

was great too. They’re not

afraid to throw in a sax solo

every now and then. Any song

that has a sax solo I usually

enjoy.”

He touts Smashing

Pumpkins as the favourite of

his former years, their second

album

Siamese Dream

being

his first ever (very respectable)

CD purchase. Coming

up, there’s more

homegrown goodness

in sight: “I’m pretty

keen for the new Holy

Holy album, which is

not too far away now!”

(February 24, for those

playing at home.) The

Shins’

Heartworms

and the new London

Grammar are also on

his radar. “There are

some massive albums

coming this year,

[especially] for pop –

Ed Sheeran, and and

there’s talk of Taylor

Swift and Katy Perry. It

should be a pretty good

year for music.”

Springvale Road (Melbourne),

Curran has also been spinning

year especially there were a

lot of really good Australian

albums,” he says; his pick of

the internationals is Glass
