T
elevision New Zealand has confirmed
the all new
Thunderbids Are Go!
–
which has been produced by our own
Pukeko Pictures and the UK network ITV – will
be aired on TV2 in 2015; DVD details are still to
be announced but with luck, a home
entertainment release will follow soon after.
The 26-episode series is based on Gerry
Anderson’s classic ‘60s series
Thunderbirds
,
one of the most popular examples of
his ground-breaking puppetry dubbed
‘supermarionation’;
Thunderbirds
also inspired
a less-successful live action remake in 2004.
The rebooted children’s show will be
produced using a unique mixture of live-action
model sets and CGI animation from Pukeko’s
sister company Weta Workshop.
The
Thunderbirds Are Go!
voice cast includes
Rosamund Pike (
Gone Girl
) as Lady Penelope,
British comedian Kayvan Novak (
Fonejacker
)
as Brains, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (
Game
of Thrones
) as John Tracy. David Graham, who
voiced Lady Penelope’s chauffeur Parker in the
original show, will reprise the role for the new
series.
The series will follow the adventures of the
Tracy family’s International Rescue organisation
as they use their incredible crafts to undertake
impossible missions across the globe.
If you weren’t lucky enough to get tickets to Nick
Cave’s solo New Zealand shows, console yourselves
instead with the documentary
20,000 Days On
Earth
, which is out on DVD and Blu-ray this month.
The offbeat portrait of the iconic artist features
contributions from a diverse array of friends and
collaborators, including Kylie Minogue, Ray Winstone,
Warren Ellis and Blixa Bargeld, along with interviews
with the great man himself. The movie premiered at
this year’s film festival but the DVD/BD includes more
than 50 minutes of extras, including a performance by
Nick and Kylie of their hit
Where the Wild Roses Grow
.
