ey there
STACK
music
lovers. It’s been quite a
month: I’ve been to
Sydney for Vivid Live. I have to say,
Vivid truly transforms Sydney; the
washes of colour on the Opera
House at night are quite magical
and there’s a real sense of
atmosphere in the air. I managed to
catch
Daniel Johns
airing his new
solo album
Talk
, and while the
music is markedly different from
anything Silverchair ever recorded,
he did pull out a couple of older
numbers and tracks from his
Disassociatives collaboration with
Paul Mac (who was in the
audience). Speaking of those on
the return trail from some time
away,
Josh Pyke
has a new album
out at the end of July and I was
lucky enough to see him play three
new songs in a private session. If
you’re a fan, I’d be looking forward
to his newie, called
But for All
These Shrinking Hearts.
Of course July is Splendour
month, so make sure you check out
the
STACK
website for on-ground
reports of all the festival highlights:
I’ll be heading to Melbourne
sideshows.
Blur
are top of my list,
very keen to see how
The Magic
Whip
album translates live, and
I’m also seeing
Mark Ronson
. In
one of the strangest and possibly
best live pairings of the year,
Pond
will be playing support. Kevin
‘Tame Impala’ Parker contributed
to several tracks on
Uptown Funk
and also produced Pond’s excellent
Man It Feels Like Space Again
, so
there’s your connection. Lastly, we
love to see musicians heading in
to JB Hi-Fi while they’re on tour
in Australia.
Patrizio Buanne
(see
below) popped into JB Hi-FI
Elizabeth Street and gently
reminded the staff his albums
might be better in ‘easy
listening’ than ‘classical’
(hence the sign!). See you
next month (I’m off to see
Paul Weller
in Barcelona in
between times) and keep
your head in the music!

S
helley Phillips has been Media
Manager at JB Hi-Fi Knox for 11
years. She's seen a lot of bands come
and go in her time there, but one band
– who are very much still with us – will
always be Number One for Shelley. And
that band is Muse. "I saw the clip for
Sunburn
on
Rage,
" she tells
STACK,
"and
went down to JB Hi--Fi the next day and
bought
Showbiz.
I've been a hardcore
fan ever since." She's not kidding when
she says 'hardcore'. She's got the entire
Muse back catalogue on vinyl (see
right), with several records signed by
the band. She thinks their new album
Drones
is a killer. "I thnk it's fantastic:
their most consistent since
Black Holes
and Revelations
. Lots of big riffs, it's
an album that's easier for them to play
as a three-piece." She's also gone one
step further than the album collection:
she also owns limited edition pressings
of all Muse's seven-inch vinyl singles,
including a treasured boxset.
Barring a fabled showcase at
Melbourne's tiny Evelyn Hotel in the
late'90s, she's seen every tour, including
an explosive gig at the Hi-Fi Bar. And
while she's never met the band, she's
happy that way. "I've come close a
couple of times, but for me, it's about
appreciating them from afar." Although,
in the meantime, she does admit that a
signed copy of
Drones
"would be nice".
