MUSIC

NEWS

A Quick Look at

New Music,

All Different Kinds,

All Different Places.

W

elcome to another issue of

STACK

Music. This month we

speak to The Getaway Plan,

who are, obviously, a very

determined lot: they've weaved

around break-ups, scandals and

line-up changes to emerge with

their aptly titled new album

Dark

Horses

.

They've also done

everything themselves: artwork,

merchandise design, a website, the

whole gamut. With no label, they've

become their own record company

by default. While plenty say – rightly

– that musicians are musicians, and

should

keep

to being musicians, I

am firmly of the view that if bands

can run a cottage industry of sorts,

then they should. Industry and

audience changes have buffeted The

Getaway Plan, just as they've

challenged the rest of the industry,

but whether you like the racket they

make or not, they've stepped up,

and stuck at it. Whether you stream

it or insist on buying everything on

vinyl (or both!), music ain't going

away anytime soon; audiences are

still in venues, music is being heard,

and is shaping culture. Things will

keep changing: the trick is to roll

with the punches, and to keep trying

to be good at what you do. It's no

guarantee of success, but not doing

so is absolutely a guarantee of

failure. The good stuff gets heard,

and while the issues regarding the

fair payment of artists for their music

remains far from settled, it's not

dimming the passion of artists to

create. Passion is valuable thing: it's

got me through the last eight years

of making in-store music content for

JB Hi-Fi, the last four here at

STACK,

and this is my last issue as music

editor. Thanks to Scribal Publishing,

all the

STACK

freelance writers,

the JB Hi-Fi music department,

and chiefly, thanks to you for

reading! Keep your head in the

music, there's no better place to be.

I'll see you at a gig.

TOM SAYS!

Most people don't care if

you're telling them the truth

or if you're telling them

a lie, as long as they're

entertained by it.

Currency of Man

One of the year's

most potent surprises,

Gardot's voice is the

remarkable, and the

music smoky and

powerful.

Sophie Hunger

Supermoon

Stylish, darkly funny,

edgy Swiss chanteuse

who also likes reggae

and jazz, Eric Cantona guests and she
