OSHA’S TOP 10 AUTOMOTIVE VIOLATIONS
Hazard Communication
Hazard communication is critical because it requires dealers to inform and train employees properly,
develop employee protection programs, and give employees the hazard information they need to
participate in and support protective measures.
Under the Global Harmonization System (GHS) all chemical shipments must include a new Safety Data
Sheet. Replace all MSDS materials with SDS’s
Electrical Safety
Electricity can kill—even if a shock seems minor, it can
affect the heart. Electrical standards are designed to protect
employees exposed to dangers such as electric shock,
electrocution and fires. Circuit breakers and outlets should
be covered and the area around electrical panels should be
kept clear. Using the right type of cord (rated hard or extra
hard) is critical. Hand-held electrical tools should use a
3-wire cord and be plugged into a grounded receptacle, be
double insulated, or be powered by a low-voltage isolation
transformer.
General Duty Clause
Employers have an obligation to provide a workplace that is free from hazards that could cause serious
harm or death, to have rules in place to protect employees, and to comply with OSHA guidelines.
Personal Protective Equipment
Employers are required to assess the workplace to determine
if hazards are present, or likely to be present, and if they
necessitate the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Each affected employee must use the PPE selected to
protect them from hazards.
Spray finishing using flammable and
combustible materials
If your dealership is equipped with a spray booth, it
must include mechanical ventilation adequate to remove
flammable vapors.
