dem, based on FUSO’s understanding that an
effective ratio of engine power transmitted
all of the way through the drive system to the
ground results in greater efficiency and fuel
savings.
The capacity of its G85 gear box is based
on the engine’s peak torque of 810 Nm.
With six forward and one reverse gears, it
has a gearbox ratio of 6:7 and gradeability
of 38%. Makitla says choosing the correct
combination of a motor and a gearbox is very
important. He argues that gear ratios play a
key role in truck performance. It also comes
with a bigger 395 mm clutch plate with 3,5 m
wear depth for more clutch life. This is com-
plemented by a clutch wear indicator for
signalling clutch wear condition, allowing for
timely replacements before the clutch fails.
The longer drain oil change intervals
translate into greater savings. Engine oil can
be changed after 20 000 km or 12 months,
while transmission oil can only be changed
at 40 000 km intervals or 12 months. Mean-
while, differential oil change can be under-
taken after 60 000 km or 12 months, while
hub greasing needs to be done at 40 000 km
intervals or annually.
Built tough
The new FJ 16-230 also benefits from
Daimler’s proven technology of strong and
reliable chassis, says Makitla. The shot
blasted and powder-coated chassis frames
and cross members make the chassis
corrosion-resistant and translate into a
longer life. The optimised cross members
also come with thicker bulges inside for
additional strength to the frame.
The FJ 16-230 also benefits from heavy
duty, full floating single-reduction Hypoid ax-
les from Daimler Technology. The heavy duty
crown wheel with thick teeth means more
contact area for longer life. The air brake
chamber offers better braking performance.
The new FJ 16-230 also benefits from
Daimler Trucks Technology’s all-steel ex-
tended day cabin. With safety in mind, the
all-steel crash safe cabin ensures sufficient
survival space in case of an accident. Mean-
while, the bumper comes with an additional
heavy duty second full strength member be-
hind it for increased safety.
For increased uptime, the FJ 16-230’s
three-piece bumper is designed with re-
pairability in mind. The three-piece bumper
reduces repair costs when it is dented or
dinged. “Instead of ordering an entire new
bumper, repair technicians can simply order
the part that was damaged, saving time and
money in the process,” says Makitha. “For
the owner who simply dinged a corner of
the bumper, this represents real savings. A
complete bumper replacement will still carry
a significant price tag with all the additional
bolts, harnesses and other parts.”
With serviceability in mind, the cabin tilts
to an angle of 67º⁰ for ease under-cabin ser-
vice. This is complemented by a full steel
openable lid with simple press of finger at
two points which facilitates easy and quick
