Director General,
The Law Society,
Blackhall Place,
Dublin 7.

Dear Mr. Ivers,
You enquired recently about the present position
insofar as delays in the issue of copy maps are
concerned.
The average output of copy maps (copy folios with
filed plans attached) in the first 7 months of 1986 was
5,314. The total arrear of applications at the end of July
1986 was 2,719 which represents approximately 11
working days' work, or an average delay of about 4
weeks when weekends and postal delays are taken into
account.
About 50% of the demand for copy maps can now be
met by way of straightforward photocopying; many of
these maps are made available over the public counters
within 1-2 days of application. Map reconstruction
work, including enlargement from 6 " to 25" scale, is
still usually necessary in respect of about half of the
applications. This in some cases involves examination of
Land Commission estate maps and, possibly, special
surveys. In these cases there can be significant delays,
sometimes unfortunately extending to several months.
As each application is processed a map on the 25" scale
is attached to the relevant folio so that any future
demand for a copy can be met photographically. In this
way the amount of mapping work which has to be done
is gradually being reduced. The aim is that eventually it
will be possible to issue all copies by way of straight-
forward photocopying and that the long delays, which
are at present unavoidable in some cases, will be
eliminated.
The figures of intake and output of applications for
copy maps during the 1980s may be of interest.

As can be seen output has generally kept pace pretty
consistently with intake and this pattern has continued
into 1986.
I hope this information will be of help to you.
