AN energy efficient lighting system at the newWomans

luggage outlet at the La Lucia Mall in KwaZulu-Natal,

installed by the lighting division of Magnet, has been

completed.

“This project, which involved the installation of modern

lighting fittings, has resulted in energy savings of approxi-

mately 56% a month,”says Gary Dawson, sales manager,

THE Sistine Chapel in Rome is now

illuminated by a novel lighting solu-

tion fromOSRAM. After 500 years, this

extraordinary piece of art history can

nowbe experienced in unprecedented

quality, bathed in the light of more

than 7,000 LEDs.The installation that

has been put in place over the last

fewmonths is designed to protect the

artworks while enablingmuch stronger

lighting. At the same time, it will use up

to 90% less electricity than the previous

installation.

Dr Klaus Patzak, OSRAM’S chief finan-

cial officer and also responsible for the

Luminaires & Solutions segment, says,

that OSRAMdeveloped an LED lighting

solution that“sets standards in terms

of technological strength, quality and

innovation”.

Professor Antonio Paolucci, director

SUNSTAR, an artwork on top of Cape

Town’s Signal Hill and a shining‘symbol

of hope’for this country’s future, was

switched on for the first time at the end

of November.

The 24 mhigh temporary public art

installation, which uses 22 600 low

energy consuming Pharox LEDs, incor-

porates old fencing reclaimed from the

The communities in the relevant areas were also involved in deciding on new lighting and they found the OMNIstar to be the most efficient,

says BEKA Schréder’s Johan van Deventer.

of theVaticanMuseum, says the Sistine

Chapel contains themost extraordinary

works ever conceived by the human

mind and is Michelangelo’smaster-

piece.“Wewant to honour the 450

th

anniversary of Michelangelo’s death by

providing new lighting for his work.”

Supported by the European Union,

the lighting of the Sistine Chapel is a

pilot project with the working title of

LED4Art, supported by the European

Funding Programme for Information

and CommunicationTechnology

within the Framework Programme

for Competitiveness and Innovation

(PSP-CIP). The aimof the subsidy pro-

gramme is to demonstrate new possi-

bilities for LED technology with regard

to energy efficiency and improved

quality of light.

prison on Robben Island where Nelson

Mandela and other political prisoners

were incarcerated.

Designed by Chris Swift, Sunstar

features a tetrahedron in the middle of a

star shape and is illuminated with Phar-

ox LEDs fromNTL Lemnis. The artwork

is a spectacular cohesion of structure

and light and, at night the Illuminated

structure can be seen by passengers on

incoming aircraft, as well as citizens and

visitors to Cape Town from as far as

25 km away.

“The artwork is illuminated at night

without consuming any grid supplied

electricity due to the combination of

energy efficient, high performance and

weatherproof Pharox LED strip lights

with a completely off-grid PV genera-

tion platform engineered Eldo Energy,”

says Francois vanTonder, CEO of NTL

Lemnis Africa.

“As a global leader in the field of LED

lighting since 2005, it pleases us tre-

mendously that Pharox LEDs feature in

this and other artworks. The technology

was selected based on our reputation

for high quality and high performance

LED products with low energy con-

sumption. Our interests lie not only in

bringing excellent LED lighting technol-

ogy to the South African consumer, but

also to contribute meaningfully in the

non-commercial sphere.”

The Sunstar is sponsored by Sun Inter-

national and forms part of Cape Town’s

World Capital Design 2014 initiative

in collaboration with the City of Cape

Town and the Robben Island Fence

Company andTrust.

Magnet’s lighting division.“The

design objective was to harness light

in the most effective way to create

the appropriate ambience in the

shop and to show off the true colour

appearance of leather and plastic

goods.”

This installation encompassed

the replacement of existing low

brightness recessed (LBR) luminaire

technology, with 60W light emit-

ting diode (LED) panel luminaires.

Careful consideration was given to

the quality of the lighting levels –and

an overall improvement of 90% in

lux levels was achieved. A colour

temperature of 4 000 K was selected

to ensure merchandise is displayed in

the most favourable light.

Magnet’s understanding of lighting systems, coupled

with design and installation services, in-house testing

facilities and experienced lighting engineers, ensures

enhanced aesthetics and optimum energy efficiency in

diverse industries.

BEKA Schréder recently supplied LED

highmast lighting for the GreaterTza-

neenMunicipality that met the exist-

ing lighting level requirements while

simultaneously providing significant

energy savings, says BEKA Schréder’s

Johan vanDeventer.

The Department of Energy, in

conjunctionwith the GreaterTzaneen

Municipality, funded the project to

replaceTzaneen’s existing floodlights

on highmasts with an energy efficient

solution.

“This decisionwasmade to reduce

energy consumption, as Eskom is

stretched and under pressure to sup-

ply as it is,”saysVanDeventer.

“The existing luminaires were of the

HID 1kWHPS/T floodlight type and

six weremounted on each 40mmast.

The challengewas tomeet the current

lighting levels at the existingmast

spacing. Several lightingmanufactur-

ers submitted quotes and designs

in the build-up to the project. BEKA

Schréder proposed 6*470WOMNIstar

LED floodlights per mast, reducing

the power consumption from6.45 kW

to 2.82 kW– an energy saving of 3.63 kW

per mast. Due to the fact that there is no

existing standard or recommendation for

highmast lighting in townships, samples

of all manufacturers were supplied to

be installed and tested,”explainsVan

Deventer.“The GreaterTzaneenMunici-

pality approved the OMNIstar as the LED

floodlight of choice,”he says, adding that

the communities in the relevant areas

were also involved in the decisionmak-

ing.“They found the OMNIstar to be the

most efficient, and appreciated thewhite

light of the LEDs.”

The energy savings and the reduction

inmaintenance costsmade the OMNIstar

a viable choice to replace the existingHID

floodlights. A total of 60 OMNIstar LED

floodlights were supplied to complete

the project.

BEKA Schréder is proud of its associa-

tionwith this project and its partner-

shipwith the Department of Energy,

the GreaterTzaneenMunicipality, and

MVMAfrica Consulting Engineers.
