A Message From President Hughes The men's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the athletic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I in 1979, and each year has seen increasing strength and competitive cap– abilities in the USO team. The University is proud of the team's accomplishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year, and / look forward to watching the season's events unfold.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TOMIANNACONE Director of Athletics

Tom Iannacone is in his fourth year as the University of San Diego Director of Athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search . The 50-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first three years. His accomplishments at USO include an on– going internal ·reorganization of the athletic department, plus improvements in the major areas of new personnel , additional scholarship assistance, facilities improvements, promotions and marketing , fund raising , drug education , academic sup– port , and new university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorsh ip. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an im– pressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of in– tercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania.

Hard work , loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the ECAC Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development , which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full -time commissioner. Currently Iannacone serves as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Committee.

Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983, Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He also served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham , Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Norwalk, Ridgefield and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his col– legiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr. , Jennifer and Eric ; all three are students at USO.

QUTLOOK

1991-1992 TORERO BASKETBALL "REACHING NEW HEIGHTS"

For the second straight year and fifth season in seven campaigns under head coach Hank Egan , the USO men's basketball program posted a winning record in 1990-91 . Although USO finished with 17 victories against 12 defeats, as well as a solid third place finish in the competitive West Coast Conference, coach Egan will have his work cut out for him in 1991-92 if he is to continue " Reaching New Heights." The Toreros had six seniors, includ ing the leading scorer, complete their eligibility last year, the largest exodus of personnel from any wee team . Gone are WCC Honorable Mention selections Anthony Thomas (14.7 ppg) and Pat Holbert (11.4 ppg), as well as center Dondi Bell (8.4 ppg), Keith Colvin , Randy Thompson and Shawn Hamilton . Although USO will miss the above players, they still have a nice nucleus of players returning . Coach Egan returns three starters and seven letter– winners from last year 's squad , in addition to three letterwinners from the 1989-90 season that sat out last year. Topping the list of key returners is starting forward Kelvin Woods (6 '6" ), an AII-WCC First Team selection and the team's MVP. Kelvin is the team's top returning scorer (13.6 ppg) and rebounder (5.5 rpg) . He led the Toreros in scoring on nine occasions and is currently 18th among USD's all-time scoring leaders with 831 points. Senior guards Wayman Strickland and Michael Brown are the other two

return ing starters. Strickland , a fourth-year senior from San Francisco, California, set a WCC record by canning 57.7 percent of his three-pointers in WCC games last year. Strickland , who averaged 10.6 ppg overall and 14.4 ppg in WCC action , is also on schedule to break USD's school record for assists. With his 93rd assist this season Wayman will have dished off 452 career assists, breaking USD's mark of 451 (Stan Washington , 1971-74). Michael Brown got the starting nod in game #14 last season and didn't lose that honor the rest of the way. In his 16 starts, Michael averaged 12.2 ppg and earned the team's Athletic Excellence Award at the end of the season . A versatile athlete, Michael can play all three perimeter positions for the Toreros. Three-year letterman Carlos Carrillo (6 '6" guard/forward) and 6'8 " Reed Watson (forward/center) fill out the quintet of seniors. With the loss of four players 6'7" or taller, Watson will be counted on to supply scoring , rebounding and defense as an inside player. The other two lettermen back from a year ago include junior guard Geoff Probst, a feisty floor leader, and sophomore guard Neal Meyer (6 '3" ).

The Toreros have three players with varsity experience that sat out the 1990-91 season. Back to give San Diego some added depth are 6'5" junior Gylan Dottin , the 1989 WCC Freshman of the Year; 6'9 " sophomore center Brooks Barnhard , who missed last season after back surgery; and 6'4" guard/forward Joe Temple, an extremely talented athlete that should help the Toreros at both ends of the floor. Dottin , the team's second leading scorer two seasons ago, is another player capable of filling numerous positions for Egan . Two newcomers that round out the 1991-92 squad include sophomore Chris Grant , a 6'7 " forward from Canada College and 6'0" sophomore guard Doug Harris, a transfer from Fresno State University. Harris will have to sit out the 1991-92 season . Grant adds size and depth to the Torero bench. USO should continue to be one of the top shooting teams in the West Coast Conference. The Toreros led the league in overall field goal shooting last season , hitting an even 50 percent. The Toreros were also the most accurate team from the perimeter, leading the conference by making 40.3 percent of their three-point shots (160-for-397) . Strickland was the team's best shooter beyond the three-point line, connecting on 47-of-101 treys. The Toreros will play two exhibitions in November prior to their regular– season opener against San Diego State on November 22. Other teams highlighting their tough noriconference slate include UC Santa Barbara, San Jose State, U.S. Naval Academy, Arizona State and Colorado. The Toreros open up WCC league play on January 11 when they host the Santa Clara Broncos.

COACH HANK EGAN

SAN DIEGO HEAD COACH HANK EGAN

Head Coach Hank Egan begins his eighth season with the USO Toreros and twenty-first as a Division I head coach. Last season's 17-12 campaign marked the fifth time in seven years that Egan posted a winning record at the helm of the USO basketball program. For the second year in a row San Diego fin ished third in the competitive West Coast Conference standings. Coach Egan has tallied an impressive seven-year record at San Diego of 111-87, as well as a 70-28 mark in the USO Sports Center. His .561 winning percentage at USO is tops among the nine different coaches that have been at the helm of the USO basketball program. Entering his twenty-first year, Coach Egan takes a career mark of 259-272 into the 1991-92 campaign. Last year's 17 victories was Coach Egan's third highest single season win total behind his teams from 1985-86 (19 wins) and 1986-87 (24 wins). The 1986-87 team finished 24-6 and won the WCC regular-season crown. At the NCAA's that year, the Toreros suffered a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in the tournament's first round; however, that year's team completed its most successful season ever. Along the way, USO won fourteen consecutive games, won the regular-season West Coast Conference championship with a 13-1 record and finished with a school record 24 victories. Coach Egan's peers from the WCC voted him the 1986-87 Coach of the Year. In 1985-86, he guided the Toreros to a fine record of 19-9 and was named Co-Coach of the Year in the WCC, sharing the honor with UCLA's Jim Harrick (formerly head coach at Pepperdine).

A recognized expert in the technical aspects of the game, Hank has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is a coach who "gets the most" out of his players. Acknowledged as one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation , good defense is a trademark with Egan-coached teams. His 1986-87 team finished #1 in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.401) and in the top-ten in scoring defense (60.3) . His 1985-86 team finished 8th in the nation in FGO/o defense, limiting opponents to 42.4% shooting . Prior to USO, Hank coached at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for eighteen years, thirteen as the head coach . Highlights of his coaching career include his 1986-87 club that finished 24-6 and participated in the NCAA Tournament, his 1985-86 team that finished 19-9, and his 16-9 Air Force club from 1976. As evidence of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and basketball people in general , Hank was the alternate coach to George Raveling (USC) for the 1984 United States Olympic Basketball Team; he was a coach in the Olympic tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana, and also scouted South American Olympic teams in San Paulo, Brazil ; he is a member of the Legislative Commission of the National Basketball Coaches Association of America; and , was one of the only ten coaches chosen in 1984 by the NCAA to participate and represent the country's coaches in a special meeting of Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Faculty Representatives called to study the strengthening of academic requirements for intercollegiate athletics. Before becoming the second head coach in Air Force basketball history, Egan was the freshman mentor for two seasons and was chief scout and recruiter during the 1970-71 season . From 1966 to 1968, he was an assistant junior varsity coach. A three-time basketball letterman at Navy, he also played several seasons on Air Force service teams and has coached on both the military and AAU levels. Hank graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. His hobbies include golf, racquetball , reading and crossword puzzles. Hank and his wife Judy have two children , John and Kelly.

ASSISTANT COACHES

GUS MAGEE Gus enters his 22nd season as a member of the University of San Diego coaching staff. He began his coaching career in 1970 as a graduate assistant to Bernie Bickerstaff while pursuing his Master's Degree in Social Science. He joined former USO coach Jim Brovelli in 1973.

Gus also completed his undergraduate degree at the Univers– ity of San Diego and was a top basketball player here after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Gus played here from 1966-70, his first three years under legendary coach Phil Wool pert, and his final campaign with Bernie Bickerstaff. With him at center the Toreros had a 53-48 record. He was twice selected the team's most valuable player, in 1968-69 and again in 1969-70. He still holds most of the USO rebounding records including career boards (948), most in a single game (24), and the single season rebounding average (14.4) . Gus was the first USO alumnus to be inducted into the USO Basketball Hall of Fame. He takes great pride in being involved with USO basketball since 1966 and in helping it to grow from a small college program to its current status as a member of the NCAA Division One ranks and the West Coast Conference. He is currently an Administrative Analyst with the San Diego Public Library System . Gus and his wife Faye have one son, Mark.

JACK AVINA Beginning his 2nd season with Hank Egan's coaching staff, Jack Avina offers a wealth of experience to USO. At the helm of the University of Portland program for 17 years (1970-87), Jack is on staff in a part-time capacity and will be involved exclusively with teaching situations and in direct con– tact with the players.

As head coach of the University of Portland of the West Coast Conference, Avina posted a 17-year mark of 222-243. He is cur– rently the tenth winningest coach in wee history. In his last 10 seasons with the Pilots, Jack averaged 15 wins per season. His 1977-78 squad may have been his best, finishing 19-8 overall and 9-5 in the league, earning Avina WCC Coach of the Year honors. He started at the University of Portland after coaching at three different high schools and at San Mateo JC in California. His JC teams had a combined 140-80 record. Between 1987-89 he was head coach of a professional team in Turkey. During the summer of 1984, he worked with Coach Egan at the Olympic Tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana.
