Twyman Regains Lead; Teams' Scoring Highest in N.B.A. History Jack Twyman of Cincinnati wrested the league scoring leadership from Wilt ~hamberlain of Philadelphia by outscor- ing the runnerup 156-131, in five games played to Chamberlain's four participa- tions during the week. Although he holds the_ tot~ point lead, 870-846, Twyman trails his closest pursuer in points per game average. The Philly center leads averagewise with 35.2 points per game to Twyman's 31.1. Minrteapolis Laker Elgin Baylor is third in total points with 660. All eight teams are scoring at the high- est pace in league history with Cincin- nati and Minneapolis the or{ly clubs under 110 points per game, with 109.8 and 101.5 respectively. Bill Russell of Boston clipped away five rebounds from Wilt Chamberlain's league lead, but trails, 673-594. Chamberlain is averaging 28 grabs each time out to Russell's 23.8. Bob Pettit of St. Louis is third with 408 retrieves. Sam Jones of Boston continues over ,5?0 in the field goal percentage battle, with .511 to .509 for Richie Guerin who established a new scoring record f~r the New York Knickerbockers Friday night against Syracuse, when he canned 57 points. Hal Greer of Syracuse is the third league player with a .500 mark. Larry Costello and Dolph Schayes of Syracuse continue to battle for the loop free throw title. Costello leads his taller teammate, .839 - .888, albeit Schayes has dropped in 175 out of 197 attempts to Costello's 88 out of 99. Boston's Bill Sharman is in third place with .867. Boston's Bob Cousy remains on top in the assist race with 258 feeds to 225 for Philadelphia's Guy Rodgers. Syracuse's Costello continues in the third spot with 154. Carl Braun of New York became the n~th player in history to score 10,000 pomts when he went over that mark Sun- day against Detroit. Larry Foust of Min- neapolis with 9,551 and Bob Pettit with 9,302 have both passed Arnie Risen (Rochester-Boston) in the all-time top scorer tabulations. Both players figure to hit the charmed 10,000 point circle this season. The 13-consecutive week series 'f}« be seen live every Saturday afternoon commencing December 12. Air t ime for ,W.e__series will be 3 :30 P.M. C.S.T. and will be sponsored by The American Tobacco ~pany and Standard Oil of Indiana. Bill Flemming, well-known Big Ten sports commentator, will handle t he announc- ing duties. Jack Lubell will direct the series. The Big Ten Basketball Regional TV series enters its fourth year with a vast network of nearly 40 television stations blanketing eight states in the conference region.
