Construction begins on Hotel am Kurpark The new Hotel am Kurpark is set to elevate Engelberg’s standards of accommodation to a whole new level. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new hotel took place on 4 April 2016. Construc tion company Eberli Sarnen is responsible for developing and running the pro- jec t. The hotel will be built onto the 111-year-old Europäischer Hof and together they will become what the Europäischer Hof once was – Engel- berg’s grand hotel and hospita lity f lagship. The new f ive-star hotel will have more than 100 rooms. Plant management and civ il engineering works are set to get underway this year. The ex terior of the new Hotel am Kurpark is due to be completed by the end of 2017. The hotel will then be f it ted out in 2018 before opening its doors to the public. Investor Yun- feng Gao and his par tners at Eberli Sarnen hope to hold the hotel ’s of- f icia l opening in mid-December 2018.

Alpine procession and cow show It is a specia l time when, in the autumn, farmers take their beau- tif u lly decorated cows back down f rom their A lpine pastures to the v il- lage. The most specia l day of a ll will be 1 Oc tober 2016, when the herds will parade around the v illage to the cheers of v isitors f rom far and wide. The cows arrive in Engelberg be- tween 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and there will be a traditiona l market and ref reshments tent at Vik toriagär tli f rom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with around 30 loca l and regiona l suppliers selling homemade produc ts such as bread, cheese, jam, liqueur, woodworked items and handicraf ts. The food on of fer at the market will range f rom traditiona l “Bratkäse” melted cheese to crêpes and Asian specia lities. Around 200 of the cows back f rom their summer in the mountains will be presented and rated in the cow show on 14 Oc tober 2016. The anima ls will be exhibited and rated on the K lostermat te f rom 10 a.m. As well as the cow show, there will be a ref reshment tent, a tombola, a children’s pet ting zoo, and a mar- ket. Folk band Planggä Bärghaiär will prov ide musica l enter tainment f rom 12 noon, and the Favourite Cow competition will kick of f at 1:15 p.m. The breeders’ event will star t at 8 p.m. in the marquee, complete with musica l enter tainment and a bar.

The sound of summer

Exciting events at the Tal Museum Engelberg’s Ta l Museum is put ting on an exciting summer programme. The vernissage of Eugen Bollin’s exhibition “Auf blühen” is at 5 p.m. on 4 June 2016. The woodcuts and oil paintings by the Engelberg ar tist and Benedic tine monk will be exhibited until 9 Oc tober 2016. Romano Cuonz will give a lec ture entitled “Simple men, big ideas” about legendar y hotelier Franz Josef Bucher and cableway pioneer Josef Durrer, at 7:30 p.m. on 17 June. He will explain how the two Obwa lden natives managed to create a vast hotel empire and a large f looring company despite receiv ing a low level of education. At 7:30 p.m. on 19 August, Charles Christen will give a ta lk on the former Engelberg Spa and Transpor t Association, founded in 1883. Running a historic hotel comes with cer tain cha llenges and oppor tunities: on 16 September, Thomas Dit trich will give a tour of the Europäischer Hof, which is currently being renovated, giv ing v isitors fascinating insights into his varied work. A great summer programme

The “Jazz in der Dor fstrasse” concer t series f rom 8 Ju ly to 15 Au- gust promises to be a fantastic event with top-class per formances. Ever y Friday evening, various jazz ensem- bles will f ill the streets of Engelberg with the sound of saxophones, trum- pets, rhy thmic drums and sou lf u l vo- ca ls. The f ree concer ts will take place outdoors f rom 5 to 7 p.m. in f ront of various hotels and restaurants. An organ concer t will be held at 8 p.m. ever y Wednesday f rom 6 Ju ly to 3 August in the Abbey church, as par t of the “Engelberger Orgelsommer” series. Admission to the uplif ting organ concer ts is f ree; there will be a collec tion. If you love folk music, we rec- ommend heading to the concer ts in the Kurpark: Engelberg Music Soci- ety and Engelberg Yodel Club will be put ting on a show on severa l Thurs- days between 21 Ju ly and 18 August. Plus, a traditiona l Stubete folk jam session will be held on 14 Ju ly and 11 August as par t of the folk music concer ts. The evenings will be f illed with the sounds of A lpine horns, cow bells and yodelling, and children in traditiona l dress will stage dance per formances. Admission to the concer ts is f ree; the events will be held in the Kursaa l in bad weather.

Wednesday is the day to celebrate traditions: children f rom the age of four can f ind out where milk comes f rom during a v isit to a loca l farm, and even bake their ver y own traditiona l Zopf loaf. On the same af ternoon, guests can v isit Anselm Töngi ’s A lpine cheese dair y on the Gerschnia lp. On Thursdays, f ishing and kayaking are at the top of the agenda. Fur ther high lights for children include handicraf ts, archer y and mountain biking.
