Capstone Curriculum Completed Capstone is a 16-module training program providing seminary-level instruction specifically designed for emerging leaders to gain expertise in the historic orthodox faith and the most essential knowledge and skill learning needed for effective urban ministry and church leadership. Ten years in the making, Capstone includes four courses in each of four ministry areas: Biblical Studies, Theology and Ethics, Christian Ministry, Urban Mission (totaling 16 modules, 10,000+ pages of text, 64 hours of video, 41 required textbooks). Each module contains a Mentor’s Guide, a Student Workbook, and DVD teaching segments. The Spanish translation of Capstone was completed in 2006. Other translations are in progress.

TUMI’s Satellite Program allows churches, denominations, and other Christian ministries to equip their own leaders affordably, right where they are. First Evangel School of

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE To meet the ever-growing global demand for solid biblical training that is affordable, accessible, and culturally relevant for the poor, TUMI has been charged with a vision to retool our operations for an even greater capacity. Our goal is to train 100,000 students with our Fight the Good Fight of Faith discipleship resource, equip 10,000 leaders in Capstone, expand to 820 satellites, and penetrate into 40 countries and 12 languages by 2021, World Impact’s 50th anniversary year. In order to resource this worthy vision we will translate Fight the Good Fight of Faith into 20 languages and The Capstone Curriculum into 10 additional languages. OUR CORE VALUES

www.tumi.org/values

As an evangelical ministry to the city, The Urban Ministry Institute seeks to integrate its spiritual formation, projects, andministries around a set of deeply held values that direct our efforts and shape our commitments. The following concise list represents the core values that we prize, those commitments and insights which enable us to pursue our goals and take advantage of our opportunities. Together, they represent a clear snapshot of our most deeply cherished truths, those ideas which inform and direct our actions and outreaches here. The Calling of God We do all we do fully assured that God is at this very moment calling, gifting, and anointing men and women in the city to represent his interests there, and are convinced that these chosen city leaders will be the vessels through whom he advances his Kingdom (Romans 8.28).

The Kingdom of God We are burdened to see the freedom, wholeness, and justice of the Kingdomof God embodied, celebrated, and proclaimed in church communities who show visibly what the“Rule of God”looks like when it is embraced by people who acknowledge Christ’s lordship (Matthew 6.33).

The Centrality of the Church We hold deeply the conviction that effective ministry takes place in the body of Christ, the agent of the Kingdom, where we facilitate the multiplication of healthy, reproducing urban churches, especially among the poor (1 Timothy 3.15).

The Power of Community We share a passion to employ innovative distance education programming to create and outfit a network of training centers in urban areas that provide excellent, affordable, and spiritually dynamic ministry education that is sensitive to urban culture (1 Corinthians 12.27).

God’s Election of the Humble We possess a certitude that God has chosen those who are poor in the eyes of this world to be rich in faith and to inherit the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him (James 2.5).

The Standard of Excellence We are held by the consuming belief that all effective, credible leadership development demands the requisite formality and rigor of disciplined excellence, with a flat refusal to be remedial or second-class (1 Corinthians 10.31).

The Explosiveness of Multiplication We are zealous to facilitate and empower urban church planting movements that share a common spirituality, express freedom in cultural expression, and strategically combine their resources to reach and transform the cities of America and the world (2 Timothy 2.2).

TUMI RESOURCES

www.tumistore.org

Our Shared Spirituality | www.tumi.org/annual The Sacred Roots Annual is our devotional guide which includes the prayers, Scripture readings, and teaching topics that we will focus on throughout the year. We produce a Church Year Calendar to go along with our Annual each year. This calendar is organized around the liturgical cycle, helping us to focus on the life of Christ day by day, and week by week. Our Chronological Reading Guide takes us through the Bible in a year, telling the story of the Scriptures in the order in which the events actually happened.

A Sojourner’s Quest is a companion to our Sacred Roots Annual . It is a collection of prayers, poems, resources, and insights that will refresh and nourish you as you walk in the way of Christ.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith is a single-volume course that serves as our official precursor to TUMI’s Capstone Curriculum seminary training, providing a solid introduction to the Bible’s major themes as well as the foundational principles of Christian discipleship.

Our Training Resources The Urban Ministry Institute concentrates all of its educational programming on ministering effectively among city populations, and all of our classes are taught in light of the needs of urban ministry. We believe that the rapid growth of cities around the world presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Church of Jesus Christ. The courses we offer are based on the Nicene Creed, which represents the essential core of our historic orthodox faith, affirmed through the Church’s history. Our Certification After completion of Capstone’s 16 modules, students receive a Certificate in Christian Leadership Studies from The Urban Ministry Institute. Other flexible certificate programs are available as well. Students typically finish their certificate in four years since they often work full- time jobs and serve as bi-vocational church leaders. We have several academic partners who will give credit to our students for the completion of TheCapstoneCurriculum .

The Capstone Curriculum is a 16-module training program, taught at a seminary level, which we specifically designed to serve as the most essential knowledge and skill learning necessary for

effective urban ministry and church leadership.

Foundations for Ministry Series courses are specially designed to help leaders grow in their knowledge of Scripture, theology, the Christian life, and practical ministry.

TUMI Summits Every 18 to 24 months we host a Site Coordinator Training and Networking event we call our Satellite Summit. It is designed to provide ongoing training and encouragement for all of our satellites. Please visit www.tumi.org/summitinfo to learn the dates of our next Summit.

The Evangel School of Urban Church Planting Our Evangel School of Urban Church Planting trains church planters to plant healthy churches among the city’s poor, applying biblical wisdom in order to effectively evangelize, equip, and empower unreached city folk to respond to the love of Christ, and take their place in representing Christ’s Kingdom where they live and work. The Evangel School provides a tool for urban churches, denominations, and mission agencies to host a contextualized church plant school in their city or region for those God has called to plant churches among the urban poor. The Evangel School Boot Camp includes a team assessment and an application process which helps to confirm that the planter has the calling, character, and competence required of a church planter working among the poor. Evangel Coaches come alongside the church planters and their teams to listen and cooperate with the Holy Spirit to see that their vision becomes a reality.

Ripe for Harvest: A Guidebook for Planting Healthy Churches in the City is the official textbook of the Evangel School.

Front Matters: Prerequisite Readings for the Evangel School of Urban Church Planting contains all readings and assignments each church planter must complete before attending the Evangel School.

Planting Churches among the City’s Poor: An Anthology of Urban Church Planting Resources is a two-volume set which represents World Impact’s research, dialogue, and insight on church planting.

THE SIAFU NETWORK

www.tumi.org/siafu

Facing a Great Need: The Inner Cities of America At first glance, the cities of America (and the world) appear to be in trouble. Violence, crime, broken families, and despair haunt its streets and neighborhoods, with little hope of change or rescue. Even many Christians have given up, turning the city over to those dark forces which prey on its inhabitants. Yet, Jesus declared that the gates of hell would not prevail against his Church (Matt. 16.18). Our cities can be won, healed, and transformed – all we need is for the brothers and sisters to unite in common purpose for Christ! The need of the hour is to mobilize urban disciples into a national community, a common brotherhood and sisterhood who share the same longings, experiences, and dreams as they represent Christ in the cities where they live! Mission Statement SIAFU is a national association of Chapters anchored in local urban churches and ministries designed to identify, equip, and release spiritually qualified servant leaders to reach and transform the poorest unreached communities in urban America. How SIAFU Chapters Work We have designed an elegant, simple structure specifically designed to connect urban believers, both men and women, to come together, pray, fellowship, and challenge one another to fight for the sake of their churches, families, and communities. Chapters are hosted within local churches or related ministries. Since local churches are the outposts of the Kingdom, all SIAFU Chapters are connected to and under the authority of a local church or ministry.

Standing Together for Christ in the City

Why “SIAFU”? We adopted the SIAFU ant

as our model for the network. Although small and vulnerable as single creatures, they become a mighty and fearsome army when they stand together as one!

The SIAFU Network (SIAFU, pronounced see-AH-foo ) is a practical means to enable urban disciples to stand together for Christ in the city!

OUR EXPANSION INITIATIVE

www.tumi.org/expansion

Summary God is raising an army of indigenous Christian movements, churches, and leaders around the world, creating an unprecedented opportunity for the Great Commission. The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) is equipping thousands of these leaders for effective Gospel ministry at a fraction of the traditional cost. We are trusting God to help us close the gap between what they can pay and what TUMI needs to operate.

History World Impact has developed fromspecific periods of emphasis: fromUS inner-city evangelism, to discipleship training, holisticministry, and church planting. Today we find, equip, and empower indigenous leaders, congregations, andmovements to declare the Gospel to every people group around the world.

The Problem Today Urban poor people cannot access traditional leadership education. • Too expensive: To equip 1 missionary for every 100 unreached people would require training 73 million folk, costing more than 3 trillion dollars (rivaling the US budget)! • Excluded by admission requirements: Many emerging leaders cannot qualify academically. • Inaccessible: Traditional Bible and seminary training not offered among the neediest communities. • Culturally irrelevant: Much of traditional curriculum does not relate to urban poor challenges. • Inadequate: Only 5% of the world’s Christian workers/pastors receive Bible training. If every traditional school was filled, the number would only grow another 1%.

Our Better Alternative TUMI multiplies qualified spiritual laborers especially among the poor. • We have been innovating in urban poor Christian leadership development since 1995. • It can cost up to $100,000 annually to deploy a Western missionary; we can equip an indigenous one for around $50 per month. • The Capstone Curriculum , our 16-course systematic seminary-level program is historically orthodox, practical, and geared toward oral learners. • We help churches and movements form satellites: turnkey administration; growth from 12 satellites (in 2006) to 280 (as of March 2018). • We design resources, events, and programming serving churches and movements for church planting, discipleship, outreach, and ministry consultation. • We can resource God-called, gifted indigenous leaders anywhere on earth, whether urban or rural, or from northern to southern hemisphere. • We equip pastors and church planters to do Gospel ministry in places traditional missionaries do not serve.

22

Our Clientele and Partners: Four Satellite Demographics • US urban poor: reaching the world through US cities • Prisons: transformation at personal, family, prison, societal levels • International: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America • Suburban/rural: same needs for affordable, accessible, culturally relevant training

TUMI Expansion Goals • Increase seminary student capacity from 2,000 to 10,000 • Translate tools into 40 languages • Develop 30 new church planting, discipleship, and outreach tools for indigenous movements

Giving Opportunities Gap between what indigenous leaders can pay and what TUMI needs • Cost ($6M) less already committed ($3.7M) = $2.1M remaining • One-time gifts ($15 to disciple a new believer • Monthly gifts ($50/month as a Harvester Partner to underwrite leadership training • Annual gifts ($14,000 establishes a new seminary site) • Designated gifts to specific translations ($180,500 for Capstone Curriculum )

THE TRANSLATION FACTORY

www.tumi.org/translations

Why Our Translation Projects Are Needed The historic mission of The Urban Ministry Institute has centered on the spiritual needs of those who fit into the definition of “urban poverty.”This focus on America’s inner cities has beenWorld Impact’s legacy for over forty years. As interest grew in TUMI’s Capstone Curriculum and our other resources for urban pastors and church leaders, something unexpected happened: Inquiries and interest began to come from a number of international locations. Many of these were interested in languages beyond English and Spanish. Hence, our emphasis on language translation was born not out of clear-eyed strategy, but from the clear expression of need by Christians around the world. TUMI sees the parallel to the “Macedonian Call”model of Acts 16. We have seen intense interest in translation projects, such as our experience at the Global Proclamation Congress in Bangkok in June of 2016. It was there that we heard the following statistics: • Only 5% of the world’s pastors have any formalized theological training at all. (This is of course, very different from our North American situation.) • If every Bible college and seminary operated at maximum capacity, after a three-year course of study that 5% figure would become 6%. Clearly, additional methods of theological education and trainingmust be added to existing capacity. TUMI’s church-based approach to providing seminary-level resources is precisely directed at this need. Something needs to change!

Since 2016 TUMI has launchedmore than twenty translation projects of our prerequisite study called Fight theGoodFight of Faith , many of which have been completed. In 2017, we launched a project for the Telugu version of the much larger Capstone Curriculum . Romanian, Telugu, and Arabic translations are also under way, and we hope to add to that number in the coming months and years. Our ongoing prayer is to be mindful of the Macedonian Call contacts that come our way, and to trust our Lord for the resources to meet those needs.

The Macedonian Call

And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. ~ Acts 16.6-10 (ESV)

The Macedonian Call model is a guiding principle for us. “And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us’ ” (Acts 16.9, ESV). We are trusting God to lead us into contacts with ministries all over the world who are interested in using TUMI materials immediately upon translation into their languages.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith, Portuguese Translation

Around the World, continued

Bogota and Cali . Appointments like this often lead to introductions and new relationships in other countries. This will be our first time connecting with churches in South America.

TUMI has recently published the Portuguese translation of Fight the Good Fight of Faith . This is a strategic accomplishment for the Great Commission. An estimated 280 million people around the world speak Por tuguese. This language distribution dates back to the colonial era, when Portugal established

the first global colonial empire. Today, Portuguese is spoken in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and many Atlantic islands . It is our prayer that this translation of Fight theGood Fight of Faith may become a valuable discipleship resource used around the world.

We are encouraged when we hear of Christian ministries that are using the various language translations of TUMI materials: • We recently received a request for 100 copies of the Chichewa version of Fight the Good Fight of Faith . • In St. Louis, our Bosnian translator has already requested 300 copies of his translation of Fight the Good Fight of Faith as soon as it is published. • A TUMI satellite in India will soon begin using the Telugu translation of Capstone Module 1: Conversion and Calling .
