AUGUST 2018 BEACON

Hello fellow NCYC members. I hope you are enjoying your summer and are getting your fair share of boating in. On July 18th NCYC hosted the Wertz Warriors Poker Run. Some estimates claimed that there were over 300 people on the island. While this outing benefits Special needs children it all so benefits NCYC and is well worth the evert to host this five hour event. We had a great teem of NCYC volunteers assembled to handle the refreshments, docking the incoming boats and policing the crowed. I herd of a few minor incidents which were corrected immediately. Thank you to all who helped out. Changing topics I wanted to give you a little report about another organization that NCYC supports and that is the US Naval Sea Cadets Great Lakes Division and the ship "Pride of Michigan". As most of you know I am part of the adult crew on the ship. My first duty is that of relief Captain, I also have been known to help out in engineering, cooking and helping out on the dive deck when we go into dive operations. On July 7th the Pride left her dock on the Clinton River and headed to Lake Huron for dive training. Aboard where eight adult crew members, four cadets from our own Great lakes division and ten other visiting cadets from seven other states. On this training we dove on ship wrecks from lower Lake Huron all the way to Alpena and back. This training was about the cadets earning various dive certifications and fine tuning their diving skills. As a side note I am always surprised that every time we host out of town cadets at least two or three of them are suprised to see how blue and clean our lakes are. On July 27th the Pride leaves for Alpena again. The mission: to locate a Tuskegee Air Man P51 Mustang that crashed in Lake Huron during a WWII training mission. Our crew will be working with NOAA out of Alpena on this joint effort. I will report to you next month how this works out.

Until than Safe boating.

See you o the Island,

R/C Bill
