AUGUST 2018 BEACON

I'm always fond of the Club photos like the cover because I think the people seen through the windows say it all. I hope you like it too. I'm pleased and proud to announce that among this months Members of the Month, we have our first ever Junior Member inducted into the coveted Fraternity. And what would a 2018 Beacon be without a correction to the Anchor Awards of a previous month? So we have one, again. You'll also see a page featuring our Member and Grounds Keeper, Tom Stackpoole. Not only does he keep or property looking like a manicured garden oasis, he entertains all present in the bar when he's done for the day. We got to laughing out loud about some of the classic "Tomisms" and we wanted to celebrate his wit, wisdom, and humor. It's like having our own Will Rogers right here in the Club. We start with a contest, please contribute. We then move to this month's feature, our Un-Sung Heros, those who "See a Weed, Pick a Weed" and then some. See the Photo Section. The flower beds and garden decorations are often a topic of admiration and we thank all of our Green Thumbs out there. Hmmmm now there's an idea, an NCYC Green Thumb Award. You'll also find a challenge question regarding an Irish anomaly in the turf and two very pretty little girls. Find the answer in front of the Back Cover. Hint: it's adorable, and I think I already have my March 2019 cover for St. Patty's Day. Blue Skies Following Seas, Ron

We had a great turnout for the “Float Down” on the weekend of July 21st. Weather was a little suspect, but the rain held off long enough for all of us to float down the Sni Bora canal. Many thanks to P/C John and Shelly Dickson and Bob and Lori Carnaghi for putting this event together. I also want to thank our members who donated the use of their Center Console Boats, P/C John Dickson, Brian Malik, P/C Bill Hendricks and Mark Busch. A great time was had by all who attended. Our Fleet Captains Ken Lipowski and Julie Delauter did an excellent job setting us up at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club on the weekend of July 28th. They had great help from Glenn and Sheila Nixon, which made for a wonderful and fun time. We have one more local rendezvous at Club Island the weekend of August 10th. If you haven’t had a chance to attend one of our 2018 Rendezvous, please attend this one. There are still some members that have not picked up their new Roster and membership cards. Just ask the Bartender on duty to give you your Roster Package. Please make sure you do this soon so we can save on postage by not having to mail them to you. Also, please make sure you fly your NCYC Burgee so we can identify that you are a member of the Club. This makes it easier on the OD. Also, please remember to take you own trash back with you on your boat. We have been made aware of members not adhering to this policy. Please come out and enjoy your club and your fellow member friends. It is already August, make sure you come out and enjoy the rest of the summer at NCYC.

Regards, Commodore Randy

What a great month of Club events! We had Kids Day, Big Smoke along with the Surf & Turf, Ancient Mariners Horse Races, Float Down and finishing off with a the Rendezvous at GPYC. These events were extremely fun and well organized. I am amazed by all the talented members we have. Thank you for volunteering to organize these events. Coming up, we have Karaoke, the Rendezvous at Club Island, the Beatles Concert, Potluck and Labor Day Weekend. Labor Day is a special week end as we will be introducing the candidates running for NCYC 2019 board positions. I would like to thank everyone who is stepping up to the plate. Best of luck to all of you and don’t forget to bring out the campaign trinkets and candy for the bar. Great news in sharing our waterways as it has just gotten a whole lot easier for Canadian’s coming to the U.S.A. and American’s returning home on a pleasure craft. The CBP has introduced the “ROAM” app and you now report your arrival with an application on your smart phone. The following is an excerpt from the CBP web site: CBP Introduces a New Application for Small Boat Reporting in the Great Lakes DETROIT –As part of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) comprehensive effort to improve the security of our nation's borders while enhancing legitimate travel, CBP has launched the Reporting Offsite Arrival – Mobile (ROAM) app and added Michigan to the list of available locations. The ROAM app offers a convenient, quick, and efficient alternative to the number currently used to report small vessel entry into Michigan by providing: • A streamlined reporting process with reusable traveler and mode of travel profiles • Shorter wait times by reporting from a smartphone instead of calling in • Remote inspections by CBP Officers (CBPO) using video chat as necessary Continued on Next Page

With Labor Day Weekend being an official party weekend, I would like to remind everyone of the Island Well policy: On party weekends as identified by the Board of Directors, each member is allowed to use one (1) well only. However, a member may have another boat in their well providing it does not interfere with traffic or become a docking hazard. No second boat will be allowed in a second well from 12:00 noon Friday until 12:00 noon Sunday on Board designated party weekends. The OD or Week Manager has the right to move any boat that hinders ingress or egress in the harbor or to a well entrance. “Roping off" or "Reserving" of wells is not permitted. A well is open and available when not occupied by the member's principal boat. Members are asked to cooperate in choosing a slip befitting the size of their boat. If a member has a boat on the island over night that member must stay the night on the island except for the Commodore. All island wells are for members use. Visiting yachtsmen are restricted to designated visitor wells unless approved by the OD or Week Manager. Boats and dinghies must enter and leave docks in the direction posted. The Finrunner sea wall area is a loading area and docking is not permitted.

See you on the Island, V/C Ian Blackburn

Hello fellow NCYC members. I hope you are enjoying your summer and are getting your fair share of boating in. On July 18th NCYC hosted the Wertz Warriors Poker Run. Some estimates claimed that there were over 300 people on the island. While this outing benefits Special needs children it all so benefits NCYC and is well worth the evert to host this five hour event. We had a great teem of NCYC volunteers assembled to handle the refreshments, docking the incoming boats and policing the crowed. I herd of a few minor incidents which were corrected immediately. Thank you to all who helped out. Changing topics I wanted to give you a little report about another organization that NCYC supports and that is the US Naval Sea Cadets Great Lakes Division and the ship "Pride of Michigan". As most of you know I am part of the adult crew on the ship. My first duty is that of relief Captain, I also have been known to help out in engineering, cooking and helping out on the dive deck when we go into dive operations. On July 7th the Pride left her dock on the Clinton River and headed to Lake Huron for dive training. Aboard where eight adult crew members, four cadets from our own Great lakes division and ten other visiting cadets from seven other states. On this training we dove on ship wrecks from lower Lake Huron all the way to Alpena and back. This training was about the cadets earning various dive certifications and fine tuning their diving skills. As a side note I am always surprised that every time we host out of town cadets at least two or three of them are suprised to see how blue and clean our lakes are. On July 27th the Pride leaves for Alpena again. The mission: to locate a Tuskegee Air Man P51 Mustang that crashed in Lake Huron during a WWII training mission. Our crew will be working with NOAA out of Alpena on this joint effort. I will report to you next month how this works out.

Until than Safe boating.

See you o the Island,

R/C Bill

Just a couple members are under the weather. Tom Martin came home to recuperate and after getting some much needed rest, we just got word he's back to doing some work. Go Tom! Mary Marini had surgery on her foot. She likewise is home recovering.

Our thought for this month is written by Vi B. Chevalier “Wondrous Gifts” I thank you, God, for countless things, For wondrous gifts each season brings… For gold and crimson leaves come Fall, Bedecking oaks and maples tall… For sparkling snow that softly lays Like diamond dust on wintry days, And quietly, with tender care, Paints peaceful pictures everywhere. I thank you, God, for each new Spring And joyous reawakening Of buds and leaves and greening earth, Of glorious signs of blest rebirth. I thank You, God, for Summer days That touch my heart in joyful ways And demonstrate with proof that’s clear Your love and blessings ever near.

Hello NCYC Members, This year Commodore Randy Pagel has established a position now known as Harbor Master. My duties are to take requests from other clubs and present them to the Board and Bridge for approval. They discuss the dates and incoming clubs by either approving the request or not based on our club’s activities for those days. The focus has been to promote clubs to come during the week more than the weekends, but there have been some approved incoming weekends that should not interfere with our members regarding available wells. Therefore, my other duty is to notify our members of those approved incoming boats in order for you to note them on your calendar and be aware of these outings. The following are the approved incoming rendezvous for the upcoming 2018 boating season for the remainder of July and August.

Harbor Master Leslie

I also want to thank the entire Board for their support and help getting the Club to a point where we can enjoy our North Channel Yacht Club and all its amenities. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Ian Blackburn I can’t believe the fourth weekend is upon us already. From my perspective everything is running smooth and the membership participation is extremely strong. The Memorial Day weekend was awesome and I would like to thank Commodore Randy and his Lady Linda, although you had an excellent team to help, Randy and Linda were the backbone of that weekend and I would like to thank you for your efforts. The ABYA dinner dance was a good time and was well attended by NCYC members. And, from what I am hearing Ladies week was a huge success and everyone had fun. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan It is hard to believe that in a few weeks that the first six months of the year will be over. We still have the majority of parties and rendezvous ahead of us. While it is hard to make every event, please make as many as you can. I was very proud and humbled to be able to perform the Rear Commodores duties for our annual flag raising, it was truly an emotional experience and I am looking forward to next year. I truly believe that the first six months were very successful due to the hard work of this board. You were voted to the board by the membership to lead and you did. The membership took noticed and followed suit. We should all be proud of our accomplishments. See you in St Clair. Treasurer, Brian Fringer Presented financial report. Started out year with $65000 income. Good month, hopefully continue from here. MOTION: Moved by P/C Carroll and seconded by Scott Greenfelder to approve the Financial Report. Clubhouse – Scott Greenfelder Had clubhouse sprayed for spiders this evening. I’m here on Wednesday nights to make sure everything is covered. Grouting needs to be done. Spring projects almost mostly done. Floor replacement next to ice maker complete. A discussion ensued about the use of the upstairs facility (bathroom) by members who aren’t staying in one of the rooms. It is the board’s position that the upstairs facility is exclusively for the people staying in the rooms. A motion was made by Scott Greenfelder to pursue getting signs made up to post upstairs to remind the membership of this. Seconded by P/C Carroll. MOTION CARRIED. Tom Altobelli Tom recommended to please buy Mark and Bev Schoen a drink for “working their tails off and relentlessly giving their time”. All agreed. Big help to Tom. Sprinklers were not working? Timer was zeroed out after Tom had them set. R/C Calihan said it happened to him as well when he was the H&G director. Do we need to lock the timer box? Having trouble with new sprinkler pump. Will take it back and get different one. Got a call from Brent Kahl to meet and go over what needs to be fixed now. Need some new pilings in the harbor. Put together a 5 year needs plan. Attempting to get ahold of the sign company to get the new signs complete in next few weeks. These are outdoor signs, commercial material to withstand weather. Scott Greenfelder suggested Tom call Art and Sue Brooks Membership Debbie Siwek Got 4 new applications. Plan is to conduct the interviews, then do the board approvals via email, as opposed to waiting to approve at the July BOD meeting. Publications – Ron Draper Asked if all directors got 2 rosters? Pushing membership to get rosters and membership cards at the club. Will be available at the club until the end of July to avoid the cost of mailing them. Extra copies are available for sale. Need to keep couple copies in reserve for new members. Dale Hall asked about getting them out of liquor room as it’s getting crowded. Discussed sending emails to people who haven’t picked up their rosters. Will remind through Fanout. Secretary – Glenn Nixon Weekend OD and worker schedule has been very stable. Discussed an upcoming OD manager ‘s concern about needing more help for one of the bigger event weekends. P/C Carroll mentioned most things on that weekend are outside, so help may not be as short as thought. Also, talking to Leslie Leitch about adding verbiage to OD manual about the club rules for incoming rendezvous. Looking for signed agreements for the organizers of the rendezvous to ensure club rule compliance. Debbie Siwek commented she has some members asking if they can satisfy their 4 work party hours by helping out for some of the poker run events. Board stated no, unless they sponsor the event. Second Boats on Party Weekends Based on a number of member complaints and a specific incident over the Memorial Day weekend involving a member’s second boat in the harbor, the board rehashed the club policy regarding having a second boat in the harbor during party weekends. After hearing suggestions on this issue from all present, the board determined that this issue has been adequately addressed and is explained in the NCYC General Club Policy, under the section titled Island Wells . No additional verbiage needs to be incorporated; however, it is up to the weekday and weekend managers to enforce the policy.

NEW BUSINESS

Mainland Dumpster Issue Over the Memorial Day weekend, the parking lot dumpster was significantly overflowing with trash. Tom Altobelli, weekend OD, felt a lot of it was there from the previous week. As a result, the club received a warning (along with pictures of the mess) from Waste Management stating they will not provide service to us if this continues. Commodore Pagel asked do we change companies? Or pickup days? Tom Suggested on the big weekends, order a second dumpster and have the club event pay for it. Brian Fringer has a contact at WM and would like to discuss our situation with them before addition actions will be taken. Issue was tabled for future discussion. Sirius/XM update Subscription expired. Last year one of our members shared their subscription with the club. For an initial cost of about $110 we can install an iPad on the wall and use a Wi-Fi service like Pandora and pay no subscription fees. Scott Greenfelder stated we have a few options: re-up XM radio or use Pandora. Scott thinks we can piggyback on his Sirius subscription. Motion to do this made by P/C Carroll, seconded by Scott Greenfelder. Motion Carried . Member of the Month Bill Calihan made a motion to nominate the Bauer’s and Huntley’s and Winker’s for heading up the steer roast. Seconded by Tom Altobelli. Motion Carried Good of the Order P/C Carroll donated a Shock Alert. This is a device that can detect electrical current by placing it in the harbor water. Electrical current present in the water presents a serious risk incapacitating one’s muscles which can lead to drowning. How do we store safely? Need to mark with NCYC. Will keep behind bar. A Fanout is to be sent informing the membership of this plan. P/C Bill Hendricks provided an added suggestion to the Wi-Fi system update. Use Bluetooth connection via iPad to play music. Internet steaming. Could also pick up FM stations. He also commented that he is just about done with the newWi-Fi system. Was a problem during opening weekend with access point from a tripped GFI on the patio lamp post. Could not log on due to too many IP addresses trying at the same time. Has been changed. Increased allowable IP address we can hold.

Dear North Channel Yacht Club members. It is with pleasure that I nominate P/C Bill Bauer, P/C Denise Huntly and Tom, and Melissa Winkler and Clayton, and their families for May member of the month. One of the many highlights of this past Memorial week end was the Steer Roast. P/C Bill and his family did a great job organizing this event and putting together a group of volunteers to get the job done. Thanks to P/C Bill, P/C Huntley, and Mellisa and your families. R/C Bill Calihan

I think it good, right, just and proper that our First Ever NCYC Junior Member to be inducted into the Fraternal Order of the Anchor be someone who’s family lineage in this club goes back to when God’s Dog was a Puppy. Our Youth Directors Shelby Romatz and Lisa Roath along with Brian worked long and hard putting together the 2018 Kids Day and the result was spectacular. Thank you from the Club, Ron Ron Draper Director, Publications North Channel Yacht Club

My nominations for June Members of the Month are PC Brian and Renee McEvoy and Don Ruma. PC Brian and Renee planned, hosted and procured the ingredients for another fantastic Surf and Turf dinner, serving up over 130 dinners that were enjoyed by all. Their unique style of serving breaks up the long lines and allows you to get your dinner right out of the pots and off of the grill ensuring the freshest meal possible. Don Ruma held his third Great Smoke featuring single malts and wines, and as the event name implies, cigars. His selections were great and the patio was once again overflowing with participants. Thank you for all your hard work in putting on these events. Having them on the same day provided the club with one of the best days of 2018. PC Pat Carroll

North Channel Lighted Buoy Survey Explained

NCYC Members, P/C Pat Carrol as our ABYA Delegate has provided us the Waterway Analysis and Management System Survey from the USCG as a first step in requesting the Coast Guard to provide Lighted Buoys on the North Channel entrance from Anchor Bay and around the Grassy Island curves. The ABYA is lobbying the USCG to add this to their Lighted Buoy program. The ABYA is asking all interested boaters to download the following 2-page document, fill out the blank spaces on the first page and mail to the address on the second page. The ABYA has filled in most of the questions for us so you only need to add your name and boat information. If enough boaters respond with a need to have the channel markers lighted, the USCG may provide us with the lighted buoys.

A reminder to NCYC Members, our club has an affiliation with Boat US that entitles us to discounts on purchases at the stores as well as their insurance products and other services. The magic number to know is our Group # GA80766Y . The group affiliation card is shown below.
