At the Snow & Safety Days, mountain guides teach f reeriders how to ski of f-piste, and demonstrate the most impor tant ru les for stay ing safe. The varied three-day pro- gramme gives par ticipants a ll the knowledge they need to ski safely over powder snow. On the Monday morning, course par ticipants head out with a guide and learn how to use shovels, probes and ava lanche transceivers. In the af ternoon, they prac tise skiing on powder snow. On the Tuesday, there is a guided of f- piste tour, which is taken at an easy pace. The guides give tips and dem- onstrates how to use touring skis, skins and ski bindings. The route of the tour is decided at shor t notice, as that depends on the weather and snow conditions. On the Wednesday, par ticipants head out a lone. Armed with the informative brochure “Freeride Safety Guide” (available in German and English), par ticipants can tr y out what they learned the day before at various checkpoints in the ski area. But perhaps best of a ll, the course is f ree of charge for Guest Card holders stay ing in Engelberg overnight. On 16 and 17 December, the world ’s best ski jumpers will be grac- ing Switzerland ’s highest ski jump, the Titlis-Schanze, right here in Engelberg, during the FIS Ski Jump- ing World Cup. Once again, Simon Ammann, Switzerland ’s most suc- cessf u l Olympic ath lete ever, will be looking to prove what he can do. This may be one of the last times spec ta- tors will be able to see the quadruple Olympic goa l meda llist f ly f rom the Titlis-Schanze, as Ammann is now 36 years of age. For Ammann and a ll the other jumpers, the World Cup on the Titlis-Schanze will be the last big test of form before the Four Hills Tournament, so the tension will be pa lpable. The ski jump had new f lood lights insta lled as par t of its renovations last year, so the compe- tition can now run into the late af- ternoon and early evening. The f irst heat star ts at 4 p.m. on Saturday 16 December, followed by the day’s f i- na l heat and award ceremony. On the Sunday the nex t round of jumps will begin at 2 p.m., as in prev ious years. Then junior skiers can show of f their skill at the FIS Continenta l Cup on 27 and 28 December. They too can hope to gain a place in the Four Hills.
