Create and relate Getting creative with kids can enrich family relationships. W hat do you want for your family? Could it be more time spent enjoying each other’s company, more fun (that doesn’t cost a fortune), one on one time with each child, time to relax and let conversation flow without pressure or agenda? How about all of these, and more? When children and adults get together to work on creative projects, the outcomes are more than the actual art or craft produced. With an interested adult giving them individual attention many children enjoy having the full focus of someone they love. By concentrating on what we are doing together we also take the pressure off the need to have ‘big’ conversations. We can let our children fill the space with their ideas, their creativity, their need to be their own person within their family, and the development of their leadership skills as we let them have creative control. Making a piece of jewellery from beads, playing with clay to build a vase, or painting an artwork for somewhere in the house are all easy ways to spend enjoyable time together. When this becomes a regular, favourite part of your family life you and your child will look forward to spending creative time together. The simple beginnings with your 2 year old involving threading buttons onto string may become bonding sessions with your teenager or young adult while your friends are struggling to find ways to connect with their own beloved child. Sow the seeds you wish to reap: by giving time and tapping into creativity now you and your child will get to know each other and enjoy your relationship in ways that enrich your family.
