GEC-ESTRO APBI interstitial brachytherapy RCT

• Phase III RCT involving 16 European centres • 1184 patients with low risk invasive or DCIS – randomised to whole breast or APBI using interstitial multi- catheter techniques delivered in 4-5 days post-op • 5 year local recurrence rates – APBI 1.44% (95% CI 0.51-2.38) – Whole breast 0.92% (95% CI 0.12-1.73) • No significant difference in 5 year late toxicity • Brachytherapy non-inferior to whole breast EBRT
