This month we have the Final O.D. Work Weekend Schedule for you to look into. Make sure to find your dates and plan your season accordingly. A lot of time and effort goes into making sure all requests that are submitted are complied with. Also see the photo section for New Members, now that we’re on the Island you’ll be rubbing elbows with them and we want to make sure everyone’s first adventure is a pleasant one. Sick Bay includes our Chaplain Art so I filled in for him this month, pray all Members are well and back on deck soon. This is also a good time to check your Fire Extinguishers and maybe even upgrade to Type ABC as was the standard USCG exstinguisher since God’s dog was a puppy. In more recent years the USCG classified your bucket as your Type A extinguisher so you’re likely only Type BC on board and these are not rated to put out solids (wood, trash, etc.,) that might catch fire. Call Member Terry Steinmacher for more details and to purchase some much better ones for your boat, this is one thing not to skimp on. Terry’s ad appears in this Beacon as Adams Fire Protection or you can find him in the Roster. Finally, it’s time to launch!! See you on the Island!

Blue Skies Following Seas, Ron

Once again, Mother Nature has not been cooperating for the Elite Brigade. The Island grounds have seen their fair share of rain, and in turn, making the walkway project a muddy mess. Despite this, it has not stopped the membership from plugging away and moving the project forward! I am overwhelmed by the attendance and the amount of work we accomplish in four short hours every Saturday. If you have not been to a work party, please consider joining us and lending a hand. Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner. This is a very special weekend at NCYC. Friday night kicks off with our first Friday night dinner; and back by popular demand is Tom the Bald Chef to cater our dinners on Friday evenings. Following the dinner -- and new this year -- is Kid’s Friday Night Movie Night hosted by Kevin and Erin Rae. Saturday morning starts off with a Weekday Manager and OD information meeting, followed by the First Mates General Membership Meeting and the Annual Patio Party for all of the NCYC membership to enjoy. Shortly afterwards, the General Membership Meeting is held, and the introduction of the new members to the NCYC family. The day continues into the evening with the Fitting Out Dinner and live entertainment.

On Sunday, the Pride of Michigan arrives and the official Flag Raising Ceremony - paying honor and remembrance to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Ceremonies are followed by the Commodore’s luncheon and Blessing of the NCYC fleet. As you will note, along with being steeped in tradition, this is a fun packed weekend. If you are looking for ways to get involved in the club, take a minute to review the online calendar. I encourage you to get involved and contact the activity organizer. Organizers are always looking for an extra helping hand. Another great way to get involved is to manage a week on the island. We still have a few open weeks and Ron Braun would be delighted to get those filled prior to the opening weekend. Hello fellow North Channel Members. I am happy to report that the last three Elite Brigades have been very productive despite the unpredictable weather. We still have lots to do to be ready for the Island opening. We need your help! When arriving to the island for an Elite Brigade work party, contact Harbor and Grounds Director Tom Altobelli or Club House Director John Sweier and they will be happy to point you in the right direction. As we prepare the Club house and grounds for opening weekend and Memorial Day service, let us remember the women and men who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Did you know that Memorial Day was originally celebrated as Decoration Day during the Civil War? Family and friends would decorate the grave sites of loved ones who died in battle. Since the Civil War years, this holiday has evolved to a day to commemorate all American personnel who died in all wars. For those of you that have been wondering about the Concorde Inn rumors and the 2020 Commodore’s Ball, it is true. The Concorde Inn is closing, and a senior living center is moving in. Terri and I have been doing a lot of leg work to find a new location that we are comfortable with and we have a few places to consider. We will decide on where we will be going soon. Only a few short weeks to opening weekend. Sheila and I are so looking forward to reconnecting with our NCYC family! Our boat is in the water and spring commissioning is in process. We are looking forward to getting the maintenance and cleanup done so we can start enjoying our boating season. Springtime preparation on our clubhouse and grounds is in full swing. The Elite Brigade is making great progress on major projects including restoration of the Robison docks and walkway, installation of new flooring in the Boatique, assembly of the new outdoor playset and installation of our new sign in the North-West corner of the island. Special thanks to Al Douglas who seems to have taken on the role of full-time fin driver the past few weeks. There is still a tremendous amount of work to be done but, as always, the membership is stepping up in typical NCYC fashion. Please consider putting in your work hours early so we can be sure to have all the project completed by opening weekend. Hope to see many of you at the May work parties! R/C Glenn Nixon

AMessage from Chaplain Art Brooks

Our Chaplain is a bit under the weather this month so I'm standing in to lighten his load. For more years than most of us can remember, Art has been informing us of the good things and the sad times in our Club. He swears in our Board and Flag, and performs the invocation at our ceremonies. He's always been there for us. Perhaps it's time we return his caring and say a few prayers for our humble Chaplain.

It is also important to keep Mary Stackpoole in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Norman Rockwell the original Selfie and Ourselves

This is my favorite Norman Rockwell. He was asked many times to do a self portrait and didn't want to bother with himself. Then one day he got the idea to do a self portrait of himself doing what he does; painting real life. With prints of the greats, Rembrandt, Picasso, van Gogh, and Durer on the side of his easel, we see him painting while looking at himself in the mirror but from the perspective of someone entering the studio and finding him working. Note the smoke from the trash can, indicating his own clumsy attitude toward disposing of his pipe ashes with oil paint soaked rags, the glass of soda perched precariously atop the reference books on the chair, paint brushes dropped on the floor, the gilded frame with the eagle and of course the Roman style helmet on top of his drawing. The realist drew himself as he wished to be perceived in the charcoal on the right; handsome, caring, inquisitive, honorable. Then he paints himself as he actually perceives himself in the mirror and back view, whimsical, workaholic, easy to laugh at himself and not on par with the greats he so admired, though many would argue the story telling in his images are second to none. Sometimes a little self introspection can be a good thing, and if one is in the position of always seeking help for others and then finds oneself in need, perhaps a little self portraiture is in order. Attention North Channel Yacht Club Members The North Channel Yacht Club Ancient Mariners would like to invite you to join our elite group. Requirements for membership are that you need to be at least 60 years old, or be retired from a job. (Not both) The annual dues are only $10.00. The purpose of the Ancient Mariners is to have fun! We have a meeting the second Tuesday of each month and a luncheon at various restaurants the third Thursday of each month. The luncheons are held on the island during the summer months. (There are no meetings in the summer months) The Ancient Mariners have a weekend on the island in the summer that we use as a fund raiser. We always have a fun day planned with a delicious dinner and a fun event planned for after dinner. The proceeds of these events go back into the club for various improvements. The Ancient Mariners have provided the TV's in the upstairs bedrooms, the swim dock in the swim hole, help paying down the NCYC debt, helping Harbor & Grounds with the water spigots, and many many other improvements. FIRST MATES MENTION MAY 2019 Opening weekend is just weeks away! Working weekends are well underway. There is a lot to do to get our clubhouse ready for opening weekend so if you are able, please join us. Our First Mates General Membership meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 25. 2019 in the clubhouse at 10:00 a.m. A continental breakfast is being served at 9:30 a.m. Any new First Mate members can pay dues on this day. Please see or contact Colleen Hall, Membership Director , at mossieoak@sbcglobal.net./586-536-4220 to pay First Mate dues if you have not already paid. Following the First Mates General Membership meeting will be the First Mates of NCYC “Annual Fitting Out Patio Party” from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. All are welcome! All First Mate members are asked to bring an appetizer to share in a disposable container for easy cleanup. A “specialty drink” will be available during the patio party, as well as appetizers and drinks. We will also have entertainment during the patio party. There will be a “Chair of Cheer” for raffle with tickets being sold five for $10.00 on Friday and Saturday. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Ladies Week, June 16 – 21 st . It’s a great time for all ladies to relax and enjoy the island. The flag ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, May 26, 2019. I must say that the club activity has been high in the last 30 days. The Rules and Policy Committee is hard at work drafting language regarding the incoming rendezvous, Poker runs and special events. They intend to have a draft ready for our review at the April BOD meeting. PC Randy Pagel and I met with the siding and roofing contractor and he is chomping at the bit to get Started. The target date to start is the first week in April. This will all depend on the ability to launch Fin

I have talked with Kevin Verkest and the Ancient Mariners project is well underway and should be ready In time for the work parties to install the new sign. Blessing of the Fleet was this past Sunday and we were represented and honored to have a contingent of 16 NCYC members join the ceremony. PC Brian McEvoy and I will be heading to the island this Saturday to start planning for the new walkway. Transportation is being provided by Biel Cruise Lines

Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Bill Calihan It has been many years since I have taken advantage of attending “The Blessing of the Fleet” at the Mariners Church of Detroit. It was a great honor this past Sunday to accompany the Flag, Chaplin, fellow members and spouses to the beautiful mass and ceremony and to represent our great club. Afterwards we met at Sinbads for lunch, thanks to Commodore Ian and Lady Marie for hosting and making the arrangements. It seems as though time is moving faster as we get closer to April 13, the first Elite Brigadee. I also know that many of us will be getting out to the island, ahead of this date, to make plans for different projects that need to be done. I look forward to getting out to the island soon

Rear-Commodore’s Comments

Rear Commodore, Glenn Nixon For the first time I had the pleasure of participating in the Blessing of the Fleet at Mariner's Church on Sunday the 10th. The service was rich with tradition and history and made me proud to be a fellow Great Lakes mariner. The NCYC Flag was well represented along with several other members and spouse's. I want to thank Commodore Ian for buying lunch at Sinbad's following the service. I am looking forward to getting out to the club soon to help with the walkway and dock repairs. Time to put the finishing touches on preparing our boats and doing the hard work to ready the Clubhouse for a fun season!

Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer Treasurer Brian Fringer distributed the financial report and commented that it was a slow month. Most of the income in February was from membership dues. Payment in March was made for the Commodores Ball. Brian is waiting for a response from Bultynck and Company regarding the 2018 tax returns.

Motion Carried ABYA Report P/C Randy Pagel Both Clinton River Boat Club and Jefferson Beach Yacht Club, have been removed from the ABYA Membership. due to lack of payment of due’s and no response to Notice of the same. ABYA Vice Commodore Patricia Mok introduced guest speaker, Web Master, Dan Harkey. Dan returned to our March meeting to answer questions and give a demonstration on how the updated and improved web site works. The Spring Rendezvous held in Midland Michigan is less than a week away. There are still rooms available. Information on the Spring Dinner dance, to be held at North Channel Yacht Club May 31 thru June 2will be available at the April membership meeting. Past Commodore Ed Bolsendahl reported that the ABYA information booth at the Detroit Boat Show was a success once again. Many of the ABYA member clubs information was handed out to the public. There was a lot of interest shown in the ABYA and the member clubs. Next month’s meeting will be held at North Star Sail Club co-hosted by Sand Point Yacht Club April 1 st . Winter dress, Blue blazer, white shirt, black tie and gray slacks. Dinner menu to follow, check website. Correspondence All Commodore Ian Blackburn read an e mail from ABYA vice Commodore requesting wells for their spring dinner dance May 31 – June 2. They requested that we advise the number of wells that we will allow and at what price.

Motion : Moved by P/C Randy Pagel and seconded by V/C Bill Calihan to allow 40 wells for the ABYA spring dinner dance and that ABYA should let us know 1 week in advance of the event the number of wells that will be needed. Motion Carried.

Motion: Moved by Debbie Siwek and seconded by Brian Fringer that boats arriving Friday night will pay $2.00 per foot and receive Sat night free but only if they show up Friday night. The end result for boats arriving Friday evening will be to only pay for 1 night of dockage. Motion Carried.

Commodore Ian Blackburn read a request from Interlakes yachting association requesting a donation per member from NCYC for a fund raiser. No motion was raised for the request.

CURRENT BUSINESS Activities –

Tom Huntley Activities director Tom Huntley and P/C Randy Pagel advised that Selfridge Air Force Base was requesting to host a luncheon at NCYC for their Community Council on August 20.

Activities director Tom Huntley and P/C Randy Pagel advised that Algonac Lions Club is seeking to host a fund raiser and steak dinner at NCYC the afternoon of August 28.

Glass washer: Update: a small sub group of the washer feasibility committee is currently in Florida doing research and physical reviews of as many bars as humanly possible. The purpose is to access, beer taste quality in plastic verses glass mugs and washer cleaning timelines and added workload… Summary of results TBD, but may require significantly more research. Housecleaning: update: Mary Stackpoole will no longer be able to continue the cleaning of the NCYC Club house due to health reasons. An offer was made and accepted to have Robin and Derick to clean the clubhouse. (Tom Stackpoole’s daughter and son in law) SEMCO: Update: look at feasibility of replacing Propane with natural gas. In discussions with Jim Taylor, SEMCO account rep, he has confirmed feasibility to run a natural gas line and meter to the NCYC parking lot. A $200 application fee is required to commence the process. NCYC would be responsible for adding an, approximate, 1-inch yellow gas line from the parking lot to the NCYC clubhouse. Jim Taylor will discuss with the public service commission for any issues and rules applicable to NCYC. Ventilation, women’s bathroom: A request has been made to Bumler Mechanical, thru Randy Pagel, to look at the feasibility and cost to implement a ventilation system to the women’s bathroom. Comcast, update: A request has been made to P/C Bill Hendricks to review the COMCAST costs and review alternatives for rate efficiency. Comcast login has been updated with a new Password and the paperless bill option has been cancelled. A paper copy of the monthly bill will now be sent to the Clubhouse directors’ home for review. END OF Tom Altobelli Tom advised the board that he had a discussion with P/ C Brian McEvoy regarding reconstruction of the walkway that was removed due to the seawall being replaced. Tom said the desire is to keep the same profile as the existing walkway. Tom also recommended that the materials used for the project should be either plastic or wolmanized wood. Commodore Ian Blackburn advised he will be going to the island this weekend with P/C Brian McEvoy to further assess the project. Harbor & Grounds

Debbie read a resignation letter from TJ Grunwold that is leaving NCYC in good standing. Debbie also read a letter from an applicant that asked to be taken off of the waiting list and will not be joining the club this year. Due to the circumstances Debbie suggested that the board consider waiving his application fee if he decides to join in the future. Debbie has advised two members that have not paid their dues that if they do not pay by April 1 they will be expelled from the club in accordance with by laws Article 5 section 2. Debbie handed out a rough draft of suggested changes to the NCYC membership application in regard to deadlines that must be met and refunding of applications fees that may be lost due to not meeting deadlines.

Cost @ $30 per person -max 15 people. • Details for the dinner buffet at Andrew’s on the Corner for Sat night forthcoming DYC July 26-28 • An announced sign up sheet will occur after May 1 st when the DYC opens their harbor for a tentative open well list Lexington Sept 6-8 • As of today, the wells for the Fall Sept 6-8 weekend at Lexington reservation site still indicates a good selection of available wells for all sizes.

Status of OD Manuals /POS Manual for 2019 Frank Corcoran advised he is updating the OD manuals and that they will be completed in the next few weeks. Dale Hall also advised he will review the POS manual for minor changes By Laws Discussion Commodore Ian Blackburn has forwarded the information to the By Law committee from the last board meeting and input from the committee will be given prior to the next board meeting on April 11.

Weekend Work Schedule Frank Corcoran will provide the schedule and teams of workers to Ron Draper for distribution to the membership. Frank is also evaluating comments from the members and will bring to the board for discussion at a future board meeting. Main Well Lease Approval Commodore Ian Blackburn lead a discussion regarding potential concerns and recommended changes. Specifically, #5 Lessee must keep vessel of their registry/ownership as described above, in the leased well. Subleasing will not be allowed. Any deviation requires board approval. # 6 Usage of wells other than the lessees assigned boat well is not permitted. # 7 Any lessee’s well left unoccupied for the season will be forfeited. Frank Corcoran discussed that the club should develop an actual lease agreement between a lessor and lessee to replace the current letter that is being used. It was decided that the current letter will be used this year with the recommended changes. For the fall and spring of 2020, the board will pursue a lease agreement to be drafted by an attorney for future use.

NEW BUSINESS

New Member Interviews Commodore Ian Blackburn asked that all new member interviews be wrapped up ASAP so that they can be included in the roster for 2019.

East and West Harbor Lease

V/C Bill Calihan is putting together a committee to research everything that needs to be completed to renew our lease with the State of Michigan in 2024. The goal is that future boards will have all the information necessary to complete the lease renewal. The committee will consist of Ron Draper, P/C Randy Pagel, and V/C Bill Calihan.

Denbbie Siwek Debbie advises that she will present any changes that she makes to the membership application to the board for approval.

Member John Zych John brought several ideas for the board to consider,

The club should consider a kayak and paddleboard storage rack. He suggested it could be attached to the back of the shed. This way members could leave their paddleboards and kayaks at the club and not have to haul them every weekend. Members could also donate paddleboards and kayaks and members may be able to rent them out. Cost is estimated to be about $2400.00 for equipment or $1300.00 to build proper fencing and racks. John suggested that the club should invest in a voltage detector to keep members safe while in the water. Suggested locations would be the swimming hole and the end of A dock. Motion: Moved by John Sweier and seconded by V/C Bill Calihan to approve the concept and appropriate research for deployment and installation of voltage detectors. Motion Carried. John suggested that we should have some Friday night entertainment at the club and that members would donate and cover the cost of the entertainment. John suggested that the club reinstate Christmas in July since it was a fun event that many members enjoyed. It was suggested that he contact Bob Carnaghi and P/C John Dixon since they are handling the float down event that weekend. Lastly John suggested that NCYC consider having weekend dock attendants. These may be staffed by Junior members or kids of members that would like to work for tips and perform duties like bringing ice to boats and taking trash to the mainland. John will document all the ideas that were discussed and send to the board for discussion at future meetings.
