Parks, Trails & Recreation Master Plan

TRAIL GAPS Connecting trail gaps in the existing system should be a priority. A few major gaps have arisen from the public over the course of this project and include the following: » » Memorial Park bridge connecting the Minnesota Valley State Trail to CH 101. » » 169 Bridge - connecting Southbridge to Quarry Lake Park and the city north of 169. There is limited connections on the east side. This becomes even more critical if a mountain bike complex is constructed at Quarry Lake. » » Southbridge area - a few segments are missing that would connect a larger network of trails in the Southbridge area including a segment from the west (parallel to Highway 169) and a larger segment connecting Red Oak Elementary. The latter segment is currently owned by the City and would be easy to implement. » » 12th Ave. E - elements of this trail currently exist but this should be completed to connect homes and businesses to Quarry Lake Park on the east and Canterbury Commons and the Drainage Way Trail (Vierling Greenway) on the west. » » Drainage Way Trail (Vierling Greenway) gaps - the east side of the Drainage Way Trail (Vierling Greenway) where it meets Hauer Trail should connect directly to Eagle Creek Boulevard and eventually across to Canterbury Commons. » » Temporary gaps have been identified by the public at the riverfront. Flooding often covers portions of the Minnesota Valley State Trail making it impassable. Other connected routes should be created to bypass trail closures. » » CSAH 16/ Eagle Creek Blvd. Trail gaps due to new construction.

TRAIL OPPORTUNITIES: • connect existing trail gaps to connect significant trail mileage together • enhance/ improve key crosswalks • develop a signage and wayfinding plan for the trail system • prioritize off-road trail experiences and connections in newly developed areas. Trails should be enticing, attractive, and safe - not ROW offsets from busy arterials • explore complete streets, bikeways, and off road trails to develop a hierarchical multi-modal transportation system • connect with adjacent city, Three Rivers, Scott Co., and SMSC trails • implement 2018 ADA Transition Plan • provide alternate routes for trail closures associated with flooding
