Parks, Trails & Recreation Master Plan

SCHOOL RECREATION FACILITIES Shakopee Public Schools owns and operates a number of school sites throughout the city, and contributes to the recreation experience of residents with it’s playgrounds, sports fields and diamonds, and other facilities that allow active participation in a variety of activities. Shakopee Parks and Shakopee Public Schools have had a collaborative and mutually beneficial relationship throughout their history. The school district would provide infrastructure that supported the Park department’s needs and programming, while Parks would provide maintenance and operations for the school. Shakopee Parks and Recreation should continue this collaborative approach and work to ensure each party is receiving mutual cost/benefits from the relationship. One area that Shakopee Public Schools assists the Park district is in filling gaps/needs in the system with their facilities. Playgrounds and baseball and softball diamonds are one of the most beneficial relationship elements between the two entities. Residents often don’t discern between school land and park land and can use them in similar ways. An example of this lack of distinction is the 17th Street Fields that are surrounded by public school facilities and a Catholic school. The property lines are intentionally ambiguous and the entire parcel reads as one facility.
