Parks, Trails & Recreation Master Plan

COURT SPORTS BASKETBALL

Basketball continues to be one of the top team sports in the country and it is growing in popularity with the diversifying population. Shakopee should consider adding outdoor basketball facilities to areas it is lacking, such as the Southbridge area and the new Windemere development. Courts should be located in visible areas for surveillance and contain a mix of full court and half court layouts depending on adult supervision potential. SPS should also be evaluated as an outdoor basketball court provider. TENNIS Tennis has waned in popularity in the last ten years but has steadied and become more popular with youth in last few years. Shakopee should look to concentrate courts in key parks in the city. Courts should be in groups of greater than two in order to provide a critical mass for players and to provide resurfacing and maintenance efficiencies. Schools offer a good place to provide tennis facilities and Shakopee work with Shakopee Parks and Recreation to provide access to residents. Middle and High Schools often offer tennis as a program and include courts on school grounds. PICKLEBALL One of the most rapidly growing racket sports in MInnesota and the country is pickleball. While popular with seniors, pickleball is also becoming popular with younger adults and youth. Tennis courts can be re-striped to accommodate pickleball and the courts at Lions Park have received this treatment. However, pickleball is a highly social game and it has been most successful where there are 4+ pickleball devoted courts grouped together. This raises the opportunity of finding court space and/ or competition, and takes advantage of the social nature of the game. Shakopee should continue to evaluate the need for outdoor pickleball and advertise/ coordinate with their indoor leagues.
