Parks, Trails & Recreation Master Plan

NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS Neighborhood parks in Shakopee typically range from 3 to 10 acres in size, yet are ultimately determined by use and facilities offered. They are intended to serve residents in the immediate proximity, typically within a 1/2 mile distance. Refer to park classifications in Chapter 2 for more information on neighborhood parks, and see chart on page 168 for the specific facilities provided in each park listed below:

SPECIAL USE PARKS / FACILITIES Special use facilities are those that don’t fall within a typical park classification. A major difference between a special use facility and other types of parks is that they usually serve a single purpose, whereas other park classifications are designed to offer multiple recreation opportunities. A special use park could range from historic/cultural/social sites, golf courses, or specialized indoor or outdoor recreation facilities. Refer to park classifications in Chapter 2 for more information on special use parks, and see chart on page 168 for the specific facilities provided in each park listed below: TRAILS AND GREENWAYS Trails and greenways connect people and places across greater areas or are a connective loop within a larger park in either a paved or natural surface material. Linking neighborhoods, parks, recreation facilities, attractions, and natural areas with a trail both protects natural or open space areas and also provide people with a way to access and enjoy these features. Trails also offer a safe alternative form of transportation, provide substantial health benefits to users, provide habitat corridors for plants and wildlife, and can be unique opportunities for outdoor education and cultural interpretation. Refer to park classifications in Chapter 2 for more information on trails and greenways. Trails and greenways listed below that are highlighted in green have been identified for a new concept plan that can be found on the respective page listed in this Master Plan: 23 Archery Range 24 Boat Launch
