RECREATION PROGRAM ASSESSMENT

INTRODUCTION As part of the Comprehensive Master Plan process, the consulting team performed a Recreation Program Assessment of the programs and services offered by Shakopee Parks and Recreation Department. The assessment offers an in-depth perspective of program and service offerings and helps identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities regarding programming. The assessment also assists in identifying core programs, program gaps within the community, key system-wide issues, areas of improvement, and future programs and services for residents. The consulting team based these program findings and comments from a review of information provided by Shakopee Parks and Recreation Department’s staff including:

with staff to demonstrate how the information can be utilized as key performance indicators moving forward and to identify core program areas, age segments served, capture program lifecycles, and how to classify programs. It is important to add that the Shakopee Community Center reopened in fall of 2017 after 16 months of renovations and improvements. As is the case with any facility opening, staff are getting acquainted with how the customers use the facility and how programs function within new spaces. There is a period of adjustment that requires a vigilant effort from staff to recognize challenges to adapt and overcome. Staff is dealing with both internal and external challenges but have been committed to responding to the changes in operations for visitor enjoyment. These instances can feel overwhelming and do require time to explore options and initiate improvements. Despite the challenge reopening a facility can present, the community has responded by participating in new programming. The Department has had many successes within the program offerings since reopening. This report addresses the program offerings from a services perspective for the entire portfolio of programs, as well as individual program information.
