I would like to extend a very warm welcome to everyone attending the 2019 Royal County of Berkshire Show which is celebrating its 110th year. President’s Welcome

If you are a member of the Newbury and District Agricultural Society I hope you enjoy all the benefits of the Members’ enclosure with your fellow members and guests. If you are not a member, you can join today on the entrance to the member’s area, beside the Main Arena. The show is over a year in the making, and I would like to thank everyone involved for their help organising this weekend as there has been much preparation with hundreds of volunteers and employees working together. I would also like to thank the many sponsors for their generous support, without which we could not exist. We are pleased to be displaying a Guards Polo match in the main ring and following the success of last year, a modern display of farm machinery, showing the Grass to Glass process. I am pleased to report that livestock numbers across the board have increased for 2019 so the Grand Parade promises to be bigger and better with a new overall champion of champions being judged in the Main Arena. I am pleased to announce that as well as the Enterprise Zone from last year, we have a new Aspioneering Area with modern technology companies offering educational hands on displays. We also have a bee hive in our new Bee and Honey Tent where you can get the full honey experience. My chosen charity this year is the Berkshire Community Foundation who provide financial support to local charities across Berkshire. In 2018, the Foundation distributed over £1 million to local charity projects who support struggling communities through providing advice and grant schemes. Support from The Royal County of Berkshire Show will help the Foundation tackle a number of issues in the county including child poverty, modern slavery, homelessness, physical and mental health issues, isolation and loneliness. I hope you have a truly memorable visit to the Showground this year.

Dame Theresa Sackler

Chairman’s Welcome

Welcome to the Royal County of Berkshire Show 2019. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful weekend and to thank the whole team who work so hard throughout the year to deliver the Show you see today. We continue to make positive changes to the Show to keep it evolving and interesting to all.

This year is no exception with our new Gin and Honey competitions. We also have two big TV screens at the show this year. One will be in the Main Arena and the other will be on the Village Green, showing the opening games of the Rugby World Cup on both days, live from Japan. To compliment this, we also have our new Taste of Japan tent where you can experience the Tea Ceremony, try some sushi or take home with you your very own Bonsai tree. Within the livestock area, please make use of our viewing area in the Cattle Building and visit our Llama Trekking, where the Llamas are waiting for you to take them for a walk. Within the Main Arena, as well as a Guards Polo match and Farm Machinery display, we also have the Extreme Bike Battle motorbike stunt team as well as a competition for retrained racehorses which will be commentated on by internet sensations Wocket Woy and the Pwoducer. Returning from the success of 2018 is a bigger and better Dog Zone, Enterprise Zone and a third band stand. The Food Hall is moving to a location closer to the entrances and the Flower and Wedding Marquee have teamed up to host a fashion show along with their wonderful displays. You will still find a packed Equine schedule, unique gifts in the Craft Marquee and hundreds of trade stands to start your Christmas shopping. With the many have-a-go activities, it proves to be a fun packed show weekend for the whole family. The Royal County of Berkshire Show is an event hosted by the Newbury and District Agricultural Society. The society is a charity with the main purpose being to educate the general public in the need to preserve the countryside and support the British agricultural, horticultural, forestry and rural crafts industries. The show is only one of the ways we deliver our aim, but please ask if you would like more information or wish to get involved next year in any of our other events.

The Extreme Bike Battle fuses multiple disciplines together for the ultimate adrenaline fuelled show, as the fearless team of World-class professional riders will be performing in the Main Area over the weekend. Featuring a wide array of tricks including flying 35ft through the air whilst performing unbelievable moves and elusive backflips, Extreme Bike Battle will thrill you through their death-defying stunts. Make sure you visit the Activity Zone, where the pedal-powered team will be performing throughout the day. Guards Polo Club

The prestigious Guards Polo Club will be providing a fantastic demonstration of polo in the Main Arena that includes speed, agility and skill. Founded in 1955 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Guards Polo Club has become the best place in the UK – if not the World – to see this great game. Situated in the heart of Windsor Great Park in Surrey, Guards Polo Club has played host to an impressive and ambitious fixtures list, including World- class tournaments such as the Cartier Queen’s Cup. A team representing Guards Polo Club will be playing the Main Arena on both days of the Show and will be demonstrating their World-class skills with their courageous ponies. These incredible riders use only their weight, speed and courage of their ponies to keep their opponents off the ball, bringing excitement to crowds of all ages. “Polo is one of the oldest equestrian sports in the World”

12

Farm Machinery Pageant

A celebration of Modern Machinery in Agriculture through a demonstration of Agricultural advances in Dairy Production Over generations, farming machinery has constantly been changing to keep up with modern technology and improve efficiency. Our “Grass to Glass” Pageant this year demonstrates the process of feeding cattle grass in the dairy industry. The process of milk production begins with the humble cow, which after giving birth is able to produce milk. During the winter months, dairy cows are usually kept inside and farmers use silage which is dried grass to deliver the cows all the nutrients they require to provide the milk you have for breakfast and in your teas.

This year, at The Royal County of Berkshire Show we take you on a journey through the different stages of production, from mowing the grass to feeding the cattle. We will be displaying a magnificent showcase of modern farming equipment and machinery including a forage harvester, feeder wagon, baler and telehandler. So it will be worth the watch.

13

Grand Parade of Livestock The Grand Parade of Livestock kicks off around 4pm both days this year. Come see the variety of magnificent animals we have on offer.
