Is it safe to swim? The Central Coast has 15 patrolled coastal beaches and one patrolled ocean pool complex being The Grant McBride Baths at The Entrance. To increase patron safety, lifeguards and volunteers patrol the beaches during the warmer months. Central Coast Council lifeguards and Surf Life Saving volunteers provide search and rescue services for our coastal beaches as well as emergency medical care when required. They also play an important role in educating swimmers and visitors on beach and water safety. Beachwatch Program - Since 2002, Central Coast Council has worked in partnership with the Office of Environment and Heritage to undertake the Beachwatch water quality monitoring program for the Central Coast. The program provides regular and reliable information to enable local residents and visitors of the Central Coast to make informed decisions about where and when to swim. Council monitors and reports on the water quality of 32 swimming sites, including 15 ocean beaches, three ocean baths/rock pools, four coastal lagoons, four estuarine netted baths and s ix lake netted baths. Samples are collected and tested for Enterococci, which are a group of bacteria common to the faecal matter of warm blooded animals. These bacteria indicate stormwater and/or sewage contamination. The test results are used to determine if the site is suitable for swimming. Results of Beachwatch monitoring are updated on the Council and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage’s Beachwatch websites during the summer swimming season, providing up to date information for residents and visitors on water quality and whether to avoid swimming at certain locations and/or times.

Fruit on the plate... Most Australians eat only about half the recommended quantity of fruit. Fruit is abundant in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. Vitamins such as vitamin C and E and different phytochemicals may reduce the risk of cardiovascular conditions. Potassium and magnesium found in fruit have also been linked to lower blood pressure. Different coloured fruits, especially orange, red and yellow fruit, contain carotenes (Vitamin A) which are also thought to assist in immune function. A wide variety of fruit is grown and available in Australia. There is plenty of choice throughout the year. Choosing fruits in season provides better value and better quality. Eating seasonally also adds more variety to your diet throughout the year. And just like with veggies, choosing different coloured fruits increases the variety of nutrients, which can enhance your health! Fruits are an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals, and they are high in fibre. Fruits also provide a wide range of health-boosting antioxidants, including flavonoids. Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables can reduce a person's risk of developing heart disease, cancer, inflammation, and diabetes. A Fruit Platter is a pretty display of fruit for a party, event or get together. Whether at a winter buffet or a summer party, a fruit tray can be the star of the show. The colourful display of fruit, berries and melon always looks so inviting.

Whether you like to draw, paint, build, or take photographs, your creative side is mindful by its very nature. The practice of mindfulness can encourage you to think about how you are feeling generally and realising that it is important to be in the present moment, and accept things for just the way they are. Sometimes, that might include feelings of joy, but you don’t want to try to force happy thoughts or resist any particular emotional response. Sometimes, you just need to accept unpleasant emotions as a part of the moment. Accept disappointment, sadness, anger, jealousy, etc. as what they are and allow yourself to feel them. You, of course, want to be mindful of how you react to the feelings but it is healthy to acknowledge them for what they are and to think about your feelings. Bring yourself into the present moment by asking yourself, ‘What is going on with me at the moment?’ You can label your thoughts and feelings — for example, ‘that’s an anxious feeling’ — and let them go. You may start to feel more of an observer instead of someone reacting to thoughts and feelings. When you’re having a meal, focus on your eating. Don’t read or watch TV at the same time. Pay attention to how the food looks, smells and tastes. You may find you enjoy your food more, and stop eating when you’re full instead of automatically finishing what’s on your plate.
Being enhance relationships. In a busy life, you may get distracted during interactions with close friends and family and take them for granted. But if you take stock of the importance of these relationships to you, you are likely to give your loved ones more attention. It is easiest to be mindful when we are doing something that we enjoy that requires the attention of the body and mind. For example, playing a musical instrument, surfing, gardening, golf, or cycling. By finding an activity you enjoy, you can spend time completely engaged, which can teach you how to carry that mindfulness into other areas of your life. Spending a little time outdoors is a way to achieve mindfulness, and you don’t need to go too far to get your desired results. All you have to do is take a walk around your neighbourhood. If you have some nice trails, parks, or green spaces, they can make the perfect environment for getting in touch with nature and for connecting with the present moment. Observe what you see on your walk, how the weather feels, what you see, hear, and what you smell! When you are taking a walk , you may find that new and creative ideas come to you more easily. If you have a creative hobby, this can also be a good opportunity to practice mindfulness. Spend some time doing what you enjoy and just be in the moment of creation. mindful may help
Benefits of Mindfulness
So many of us spend our days just running from moment to moment. We are busy, have demands coming from several different areas of life, and simply don’t feel like there is time to stop and unwind. Through mindful living practices, we can find more happiness, joy, and meaning in our lives. That said, being mindful is not as easy as it sounds. It is a habit that you have to develop. Mindfulness is the idea of learning how to be fully present and engaged in the moment, aware of your thoughts and feelings without distraction or judgment. Mindfulness is a way of training yourself to focus your attention in a certain way to calm your mind. It can help you in your day-to-day life, work, relationships and overall wellbeing. Being mindful may allow you to focus on and appreciate what you have instead of taking things for granted. The awareness and feeling of gratitude may help you feel renewed. Without being mindful, you may simply react to negative thoughts and feelings. Practising mindfulness may help you to become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, and manage them in a positive way. Taking control of your thoughts and feelings can help reduce stress and anxiety.

Get wired for the influx of smart gadgets ‘Smart Home’ – what does it really mean?
An easy, affordable way to start on your smart home journey is with smart plugs, which you can switch on or off using an app on your phone or a voice command to Google Home or Amazon Echo. For example, you can turn on a lamp when you’re not home to make it look like you’re there. Or, you can triple-check that you switched the iron off by checking the app. To take things to the next level, you need to either pre-wire high-quality cables in a new build or retrofit smart wiring if you’re updating your current home. Pre-wiring means that even if you don’t use whole-house automation systems, whatever features you do use can be put into one single interface or control panel. This makes it much easier to coordinate, manage and automate all your heating, lighting and security options. With pre-wiring, you have the capacity to add additional systems at a later stage and you can easily run conduits to the areas in your house where you may want to access video, in-wall or in-ceiling speakers and data in the future. In the kitchen, smart devices can be retrofitted to existing appliances, such as smart stove knobs for fire prevention, or a camera system attached to a fridge that reorders food and controls other smart home devices via a front-of-fridge control. Or, you could start planning your installation of a robotic chef, like the recently unveiled Samsung Bot Chef, to do all your chopping, whisking, pouring and cleaning.
8 Home & Lifestyle Magazine | Autumn 2021 Other appliances like washing machines, dryers and dishwashers might run at odd hours to take advantage of off-peak power rates or solar energy. The connected home of the future isn’t just In a nutshell, it’s when your home and the appliances and devices inside it are connected to the internet and each other. From security cameras to heating systems, microwaves to washing machines, fridges to lights, they’re all linked to apps on your phone and to voice assistants – enabling you to control them wherever you are. They’re connected to the home too, meaning they respond to what’s going on around them. Smart home automation is fast becoming the norm. A truly smart home will turn off the lights when you’re not at home, take advantage of off-peak electricity rates, adjust your thermostat and even close the shades on a hot day. Many internet-enabled devices, such as smart thermostats, offer a glimpse of what’s to come, checking the daily weather forecast and optimising your heating and cooling for the layout of your home. Home automation also means you have a central ‘smart’ hub, which interacts with a wide range of household devices from fridges and dishwashers to smoke alarms and security systems. It’s the glue that binds your smart devices into a truly smart home and connects them to the outside world. Rather than just relaying your commands, smart homes will learn your habits so they can make smart decisions on your behalf while you’re asleep, at work or on holidays. They’ll also take advantage of smart meters to optimise your energy usage day and night. Forget to kill the lights when you leave for work and your smart home can turn them off for you. Head to the snow for a long weekend and it can ensure the heating doesn’t kick in on a cold morning when no-one’s home.
about the convenience of controlling your appliances from the couch; it’s about playing it smart when it comes to energy efficiency. We can control our home’s temperature, lighting, window treatments and security with a press of a button. As well as automating and controlling lighting and heating from wherever you are, you can control blinds and curtains, your vacuum cleaner and even your coffee machine – so you can come home to a clean, cosy house, and wake up to a fresh brew. For security you can install doorbell cameras that stream to your phone, security alarms that feed into an app, remote-controlled door locks, plus motion sensors, fingerprint scanners and more. Smart home technology allows you to monitor your power consumption and identify which devices are draining power. There’s also a host of products that can help reduce energy use. Smart plugs, monitor the amount of energy individual devices are using, and you can shut them down via your phone – or via your voice-activated personal assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant. Many of the new technologies appearing in our homes are smaller and lighter than ever. Computers are no longer the bulky boxes they once were; cupboards of DVDs
have been replaced with Kindles and Netflix. Yet other technologies – like televisions and battery storage units – are taking up more space. It’s not always easy to imagine what the next technological advancement is going to look like, but with a little planning it’s possible to soften the impact technology may have on our home renovations or building.

Does your pet have a noise phobia?
attempts.
Dogs may develop an excessive fear or phobia towards virtually any noise but when our dogs hear certain sounds, the brain instantly processes them to determine whether they might signal danger. Often these sounds are dismissed as “safe” if the dog has experienced them many times before or if he is able to link them with a visual stimulus. Dogs are also likely to be tolerant of sounds from a predictable source. The TV often broadcasts unusual or even disturbing sounds but for most dogs this is acceptable: they have learnt to accept the noises from household audio equipment and whilst they may not enjoy the exposure, they are more accepting to this than randomsounds with no predictable source. Formildcasesofnoisephobia, itmaybeenough to “protect” your dog or cat from the noise by giving them a safe place to shelter. It’s generally best to keep them indoors during these times (with a familymember nearby), asmany pets get injured or lost when they make panicked escape

Never punish your pet for being afraid, destructive or for having toileting accidents during these times - punishing them will only worsen their fear. If your pet still seems scared despite these s u p p o r t i v e
Close your blinds or curtains, Try playing soft, soothing music or white noise like an exhaust fan or washing machine to help mask outside sounds.Create a safe hiding spot for your pet in a cupboard, behind a couch, or in their crate, with some blankets or a quilt for them to snuggle under. Apply a calming pheromone spray to your pet’s bedding. If you are looking for a style that is both versatile and blends with every type of decor, then wood flooring is the best option. It gives a lot of warmth and character to both traditional and modern homes. Whether you are using wood flooring for your office or residential space, it is a classy and reliable choice for both. Your carpet and vinyl flooring needs to be replaced after a certain duration but wood flooring just requires to be refurbished or re-sanded. This helps to refresh the flooring to its original state whilst maintaining its lustre and finish, and wood flooring is less prone to damage, looking more graceful with age. Wood flooring also provides a good return on investment, as the value of wood flooring continues to increase with time. Budget is always an important factor while choosing the type of flooring you want. But these days, wood floorings have both expensive and inexpensive options. It is an expense that is of good worth in the end, as wooden flooring can increase the market value of your residence. Proflooring Umina will give you a thorough explanation of which floors are most suitable for your specific project. Our experienced and knowledgeable staff can show you our comprehensive collection of quality oak, timber and laminate floors to choose from based on specific colours, wood species, dimensions or any other characteristic needed to complete your project with ease. Q : After being diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer nearly 5 years ago, I subsequently had a mastectomy as well as all my lymph nodes removed on one side. This was followed by the recommended follow-up radiation & chemo which actually took a terrible toll on my body and has also terribly affected my short term memory. Now I’ve just been told I have a secondary tumour and am being offered chemo again without further surgical intervention. I’m obviously very apprehensive to go down the same road again, but before I even consider it, I need
BY GEOFF GARLINGE
Q : I try hard to eat a balance diet, exercise regularly and look after myself the best I can but I’m still lacking energy and dragging myself out of bed in the morning. I’ve only just turned 40 and my waistline is starting to spread, my skin’s terrible & my hair has lost it. My digestion is nowhere near as good as it used to be and I can’t seem to tolerate certain foods I used to enjoy. My bowel function has become more sluggish too. Last but not least, I’m frighteningly starting to lose my sex drive. I never dreamed this would all happen to me and am now fighting off depression. It’s all making me feel very uncomfortable and stressed to the point of desperation, but I don’t want to resort to taking medications or laxatives. Can you help me with a natural plan? A : It’s great that you’ve been working on your greatest asset – your health. 40 is definitely a milestone as is the big 50. Unfortunately, the average person doesn’t have any plan via the lack of good counsel towards prevention. Though arguably 40 is relatively young & if you’re really well 60 is the new 40, your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) nevertheless does slow down...HGH plummets...& the body generally requires far more TLC. If not adequately addressed, the ageing process accelerates, subsequent muscle wasting inevitably occurs & along with hormonal changes, skin sags as dangerous & unhealthy fat gradually accumulates. These are basic reasons for your current problems. However, even without eating the typical processed rubbish that fills supermarket shelves, mass produced modern day food isn’t what it used to be & certainly does not provide the solution. But there is good news...via implementing dense nutritional supplementation that’s imperative to achieve & sustain maximised health. For example one heaped teaspoon of GREEN FUSION i.e. Australian Green Barley, Wheatgrass & Alfalfa (gluten-free & Coeliac friendly) is equivalent to chomping1kilo of Organic green veggies – which of course no one ever does. Similarly, one level teaspoon of freeze-dried MAQUI BERRY is equivalent to a bucket of fresh Organic blueberries! Even if not the typical toxic sprayed variety, laboratory analysis confirms the weak antioxidant value of blueberries to be all but gone after just 3 days from harvesting – making them a classic waste of money. Conversely, BEE POLLEN is the ideal component to add in formulating a functional strategy to combat ageing & the problems you are experiencing. BEE POLLEN is an amazing broad spectrum nutrient-dense food containing all
to know is there anything natural I can take to reduce the horrendous side effects that can sometimes seem even worse than the disease? A : Very sorry to hear your dilemma which is sadly all too common these days. Real stories such as yours are far too commonplace where regret and disappointment are rife – especially when metastasis rears its ugly head as it so often unexpectedly does. The majority of cancer sufferers actually do experience some secondary reoccurrence via microscopic migration at a cellular level. This takes place due to a number of reasons that I won’t elaborate on here. Sufficient to say all Cancer patients should be encouraged to implement a preventative strategy. On a positive level however (though no guarantees can be made with cancer) it is nevertheless definitely possible to bolster your immune system whether or not you decide to do further chemo/radiation. Bovita (BTC) liquid will be your best friend, as will SLO, SUN CHLORELLA, WAKASA GOLD Plus, LACTOFERRIN & PROPOLIS at the very least. Over the past 25years I have seen those suffering frommany cancers effectively reduce the side-effects of both chemo & radiation using Nutraceuticals & genuine Superfoods in the context of a balanced healthy lifestyle. Additionally, many enjoy reduced inflammation, less pain, more energy and come out the other side with a highly functional immune system in order to live well. As always knowledge is the key & the application of the power. While visiting my favourite colleague Professor Jagat in Deakin University I’ve witnessed wonderful studies being carried out on LACTOFERRIN utilising Nanotechnology & yielding astounding results in many areas of healthcare including cancers including such as breast, brain & prostate. Nutritional Cancer support simply makes good sense at every juncture as does the ongoing research & clinical trials which are really promising & also exciting. The crucial balance is achieved via gaining the accurate knowledge, then specifically applying it in order to give yourself your optimal quality of life for your appointed number of days. Be clear about what you are trying to screen - is it just visual or is it acoustic as well? Today's material options and styles are many, and seeing modern architectural materials meeting with traditional concepts is nothing short of amazing. Contemporary materials can include: MDF- stands for medium density fibreboard, which is a compressed wood, timber and glue product sold in varying sheet thickness. MDF can be laser cut quickly and thickly and as it is lightweight and very easy to install. This creative wooden material can also be used in cabinetry work and is a fantastic medium for laser cut decorative screens inside the home. Weathered steel -Architects love weathered steel. It can look stunning in residential architecture. It has a few different names, including "CorTen" and "rusted steel". The product has been intentionally altered to quicken the rusting effect. If you do use it internally, you must ensure it does not come in contact with water as this will cause rust staining. If you are thinking about using weathered steel externally, ensure the screen can drip into a pond or onto grass or a material that is complemented by rust staining. Plastic and Acrylic -When it comes to these products there is a wide variety of colours, finishes and textures available. Metal -Screens can prettymuch bemade of any kind of sturdy construction sheeting, including smooth mild steel, patterned stainless steel, copper and powder coated aluminium. All metal forms are readily laser cut and provide the strength required for intricate designs and pattern work. Think about screen maintenance -There are some screen materials that require some care, MDF for example, can be highly absorbent if placed in a moisture rich environment, and can soak up moisture like a sponge. CorTen is a rust-coated steel, so only install it where you know you can prevent its rusting patina causing unwanted staining and damage to other materials. Compare costs and quality - Of all the materials mentioned above the Acrylics, Stainless steel and Aluminium installations are the most expensive. The most economical product would be the MDF as it is light and easy to work with in comparison to steel. Available at Bunnings. Choosing the right privacy screen
Reasons Women Over 50 Need to Exercise More
rise. A regular workout plan may not restore diminishing hormones, but it will provide natural stress relief and a good cardio workout, both of which can help lower blood pressure and improve HDL (good) cholesterol. As with muscle, we lose bone tissue as we age, one in two women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. As we age, we can help preserve bone density bywith a workout plan that is both weight-bearing and bone-loading. The full body workout at Curves is both! Though walking and running come quickly to mind as weight-bearing activities, muscle exercises for women also put weight on your bones, stimulating the production of new tissue and shoring up density. The health benefits of starting strength exercises for women are plenty, as are the benefits of a corresponding healthy eating plan. As always, consult with your doctor regarding your fitness relationship goals and the right type/intensity of physical activity for you. Phone Curves Erina: 4367 2204
16 Home & Lifestyle Magazine | Autumn 2021 Whether you’re 25 or 85, regular exercise for women provides a wealth of health benefits, some of which take on greater significance in the second half of our lives. Overweight and obesity are associated with just about every major disease. Many of us find it more challenging to keep our weight where we want it post-menopause vs. pre. A slower pace of life is a likely factor, but also, as we age, we lose lean muscle tissue, which means resting metabolism slows, as do the number of calories we burn. Want to put some of that Rest certainly is important—as in the 7 to 9 hours of sleep you need every night—but we’re not meant to put our feet up and relax. We should become more active, not less active, as we get older. But what often happens is that exercise for women decreases with life changes, and women’s fitness levels decline. And then even simple things like going upstairs become harder, so we take the elevator, we become even less active, and fitness declines further. It can become a downward spiral.
lean muscle back on? The muscle building whole body workout you do in the Curves circuit will help you do just that. Bonus: you also get a cardio workout in your 30 minutes at Curves ladies only gym. Hit Curves for your full body workout most days of the week, combined with a weight loss eating plan, and you’ll be well on your way to achieving your weight loss goals. One of the major diseases associated with obesity is diabetes. The declining activity in the population as a whole is putting us at risk. But, by starting a regular workout routine, you have the power to change this risk. Luckily, one of the many health benefits of exercise is regulation of blood glucose and improved insulin sensitivity. Plus, the Curves Circuit is a great weight loss workout plan. All of these benefits of exercise help prevent type 2 diabetes. Your risk for heart disease increases after menopause, as estrogen levels drop and blood pressure and cholesterol start to
