HAND SAFETY MATTERS: WORKING TOWARDS SAFER WORKPLACE Hands are one of the most important asset in doing your job. It is prone to risks and serious injuries when you’re at the worksite. These vital tools suffer a great deal of wear and tear caused by harsh conditions like weather, dirt, chemicals, grease, solvents, oil and other harmful substances. Take into account the type of industry and setting you have in your worksite to know the hazards that you may be up against. It is important to protect your hands when you are constantly handling sharp tools or heavy equipments that can cause lacerations and punctures. Understanding the importance of using the right work gloves and finding a perfect pair that matches the task at hand is essential in reducing hand injuries.

6

Stego ® Gloves Technologies

Skin cuts or lacerations have the highest occurrence of traumatic hand injuries. The damages can range from simple skin cuts to more serious injuries such as severed nerves, tendons and even limbs. 6 working days are lost as a result of hand related injury. Hand injuries lead to employer to pay out on lost man hours and medical expenses. An average of

CUTS AND LACERATIONS

OSHA reported 70% of workers that experienced hand injuries were not wearing gloves. The remaining 30% wore gloves but were either damaged or the wrong type was worn for the hazard present.

70%

Most of the injuries are due to abrasion. Abrasion occurs when the skin is rubbed or torn off due to friction. The scraped-off layer of skin can contain particles of dirt, which may lead to infections.

ABRASION

Puncture wounds are due to pointed objects that get pierced into the skin and deeper tissues. Puncture injuries from sharp and pointed tools can cause serious damages to nerves, bones and even cause infections if left untreated. age18 to 25 report the largest proportion of work-related hand injuries. The study shows new employees who were at the job for less than three months have higher risks of hand injuries. Workers

PUNCTURES

According to the International Association of Drilling Contractors statistics, hand and finger injuries make up nearly 50% of incidents in the oil and gas industry.

50%

High pressured machines and tools used to pound, squeeze, or pulverize objects in the workplace can cause accidental crush injuries to the hands. It can result in seriously fractured bones, which could also affect nerves, leading to temporary or permanent injuries.

IMPACT AND CRUSHES

Based on a survey, 21% of workers report that their safety gloves are uncomfortable, trap heat, impairing dexterity and lack adequate grip.

21%

The hands of workers in oil and gas are exposed or covered in oil and its byproducts hence making the task more difficult resulting in injury. Gloves with good grip and dexterity are important on field due to presence of oils and lubricants.

OIL AND GREASES

13 million workers have jobs that result in chemical

More than

exposure on the skin and costs more than $1 billion each year.

Chemicals are frequently used in our daily life and at work. Skin exposure to chemicals can result in very serious injuries and in some cases life-threatening health issues.

EN 388:2016 - Protection against mechanical risks

Protection against mechanical risks of abrasion, blade cut, tear, puncture and, if applicable, impact. It is developed to determine the different levels of protection against different risks to be defined. Specified and tested levels of resistance to the following risks: • Abrasion (1 to 4): number of cycles needed to break the glove at constant speed. • Cutting by slicing (1 to 5): index calculated based on the number of cycles needed to cut the glove at constant speed. • Tearing (1 to 4): force needed to tear the glove. • Puncturing (1 to 4): force needed to puncture the glove with a standardized steel pin.

TWO CUT TEST METHOD: * Coup Test - The circular blade moves back and forth across a material sample under a fixed load of 500 grams (5N), while rotating in the opposite direction of the linear motion of the mounting device. Results of this test are calculated by recording the number of blade revolutions needed to cut through the material, which is then compared to a Cut Index.

* TDM-100 Test - The straight blade cut test uses a straight blade drawn across a specimen until cut-through takes place and measures the contact load applied to the blade in order to make a cut-through over a 20mm stroke length. Force and cut-through length are plotted on a scatter graph and a trend line is generated.

ANSI / ISEA 105-2016 Cut - ASTM F2992-15 (TDM)

The new ANSI/ISEA 105-2016 includes new classification levels, which includes a new scale to determine cut score (commonly referred to as the ANSI cut score), and a revised method for testing gloves to the standard. It uses a Tomodynamometer Machine (TDM-100) and the test is based on the ASTM F2992-15 standard. The goal of this test is to measure how much force is needed to cut through a fabric. Note: In order to differentiate the levels in the new standards from the old ones and limit confusion during testing, the new cut levels will have an “A” listed in front of them.

EN 374:2016 - Protection against dangerous chemicals & micro-organisms

There are more than 15,000 different chemicals in use by many industries and an approved tested chemical gloves are the right solution against these risks. Penetration - is the flow of chemicals and micro-organisms through the porous material, seams, small holes or other small defects in the glove material. Permeation - is the process where a chemical passes through the glove’s material on a molecular level. Permeation means the chemical’s molecules penetration through the outer material of the glove. Diffusion is the movement of molecules through the material. Desorption is the outward flow of molecules from inside the glove. Degradation - deterioration of the physical properties of the glove in contact with the chemical. Degradation Resistance (DR) shall be reported in the User Instruction.

It is based on three test methods: • Penetration test in accordance with standard EN 374-2: 2014 • Permeation test in accordance with standard EN 16523-1: 2015 which replaces standard EN 374-3 • Degradation test in accordance with standard EN 374-4: 2013

Chemical Assessment Process

In many workplace situations chemical protective gloves are intended to limit the systemic uptake of chemicals in the hands. Employers are obligated to carry out risk assessments to collect all information on risks to health at a workplace. Protective gloves are needed to prevent injuries to the hands and to comply with the hazard prevention hierarchy.

Chemical Exposure Type Determine and confirm the level of chemical exposure that the gloves must resist • Immersion The gloves provide full protection against complete chemical immersion. • Splash

QUALITY TESTED - AQL What is AQL?

The AQL, or the Acceptable Quality Level, an important criteria for measuring quality in mass production of gloves. How does AQL works? A certain quantity from the batch of manufactured products is removed for random testing in accordance with an accurately defined procedure. These random samples are then tested in accordance with legally stipulated Standards and Specifications.

AQL | 4.0 Suitable for Industrial Applications

AQL | 1.5 Suitable for Medical Applications
