JOHN CUNNINGHAM Head Coach

Beginning his 21st season as head coach of the University of San Diego baseball program, John Cunningham has guided the Toreros from a NCAA Divi- sion 11 power to one of the top programs in the Southern Califor- nia Baseball Association (one of the best baseball conferences) and the NCAA Division I ranks . A native of San Diego, Cunning- ham attended St. Augustine High

School where he was a scholastic and athletic standout receiving AII-CIF honors in baseball and led the County in scoring during his senior year basketball season. Cunningham attended the 'University of San Francisco where he again was a baseball and basketball standout, whi le also making the Presidents' Honor Roll six times and achieving membership in the National Jesuit Honor Society, "Alpha Sigma Nu." He received a B.S. Degree in History as well as a general secondary credential. In basketball, John was named to the All-Conference and Honorable Mention on the Catholic All-American teams. Baseball cornered him a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In his senior year, Cunningham was USF's "Athlete of the Year." John began his career at USO in 1962, with 1981 seeing him win his 400th game. From 1969 through 1983, the Toreros have compi led eleven winning seasons out of fourteen. His teams have won thirty or more games five times, first in 1971; then back to back in 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981. Four of his teams have gone to post-season play- offs; two of the four becoming regional champions and College World Series participants. The 1971 team won the regional title while setting the school record of 34 wins. For that performance, Cun- ningham was named Di strict 8 "Coach of the Year." 1979 was Cunningham's first effort at the Division I level. Contrary to expectations, he guided the Toreros to an impressive 32-19-1 record and a fourth place (14-12) finish in the SCBA. His 1980 Torero team finished the year at 30-25-1 (14-1 4 SCBA) and. in 1981 USO finished the year 30-15-1 and a fourth place finish in the Conference with a 15-12-1 record. 1982 was USD's first year under the .500 mark in SCBA action with a 13-15 record and a 29-24-1 overall mark. Last season was the fi rst time since 1975 that the Toreros overall record was under .500 as they fin ished 17-27-1. Besides coaching baseball, John works for the National League of the Major League Baseball Association as the San Diego Padres of- ficial scorer. He also works for the National Basketball Association as the San Diego Clippers official scoreboard operator. John and his wi fe Nancy were married in May of 1978. He has a stepson, Geoffrey, age nine.

JOHN GUNTHER Assistant Coach

Coach Gunther will be begin- ning his sixth season as the Toreros pitching coach. John graduated with a degree in sociology from U.C. Santa Bar- bara, where he played catcher for the Gauchos. He then received his Masters in Physical Edu- cation from the University of the Pacific. After one year of semi- pro ball, he spent a few years at various coaching assignments before becoming pitching coach for two seasons at San Diego State. He then spent four years at Mesa College as an assistant, before coming to USD. John and his wife Diane reside in San Diego with their three sons, Scott (11), Paul (8), and Tim (5) Coach Saverino will be in his 2nd year of coaching at USD, and it will be a short one at that. Mike will help coach the first half of the season before becoming player-coach for the California Angels minor league system later this spring. It will be Mike's fourth year as an infielder with the Angels and his second as a coach. Mike graduated from USD in 1980 with a degree in Behavioral Science. As a four year starter for USD, Mike holds five USD records and can be found in the top three of numerous Torero records. In 1980, Mike was MVP while bat- ting .323 with 55 runs scored, 63 hits, 55 walks and 14 sacrifice hits. Mike is single and resides in San Diego. MIKE SAVERINO Assistant Coach

JOHN MULLEN Assistant Coach

Coach Mullen will be in his 1st year of coaching at USD. John is currently enrolled in the USD Master's program for Business Administration. John was a four year player at USD and last year was the team 's M.V.P. and an SCBA First Team member. While batting .351 for the year, John led the team in at bats (168), runs scored (34), hits (59), and total bases (71 ). He batted .394 in SCBA action. His 19 game hitting streak in which he banged out a total of 38 hits is a new Torero

record. He can be found among the top three in numerous single season and career records including hits (227) and triples (20). John is single and resides in San Diego. 3

1984 USD PROSPECTUS Last season saw the Toreros finish under the .500 mark in the Southern California Baseball Association for the second time since their inception in 1979 with a 10-18-1 record and 17-27-1 overall record. To get back to his winning ways, head coach John Cunningham felt he had to improve his team in three areas. His off- season concerns were with pitching, left-handed hitting, and his catching crew. Now 1/\!,ilh the fall program completed and his first game right around the corner, J.C. feels he has strengthened his pitching squad and indications are that the catchers will be better with playing time. This year's squad however will still have an absence of left-handed power hitting. Coach Cunningham will have to replace a couple of key person- nel this season as he lost last year's M.V.P. in John Mullen. John received SCBA First Team honors after batting .351 for the year. He had a 19 game hitting streak in which he banged out a total of 38 hits, a new Torero record. John ends up among the top career Torero leaders in a number of offensive categories. Gone is second baseman Bruce Tomlinson who over four years proved to be one of the most consistent defensive players USO ever had. The last key loss was at catcher with the graduation of Steve Sciacca. Although Steve was troubled most of the season with injuries, he batted .353 and led the team in home runs with 6. This year's pitching crew will be led by seniors Russ Applegate (5-9, 4.37 ERA) and Mike Fazekas (5-9). Sophomore Casey Morales was a pleasant surprise as he was 3-1 with an ERA of 4.20. JC transfers Tom Seyler (Antelope Valley) and Greg Bertrand (Delta College) should both find a spot in the starting rotation. Tom was drafted in the 3rd round by the Cardinal organization last year after receiving First Team All-State honors. He posted an ERA of 2.30 while striking out 93 batters in 95 innings. At Delta, Greg was 9-2 with a 1.89 ERA and was the team 's M.V.P. and All-League member. Junior Eric Bennett (.280 B.A., 28 RBl 's and 8 doubles) will switch over to catcher this year after playing his first two years at first and third. Back-ups will be junior Eric DeGennaro (led fall pro- gram in HR's and RBl 's) and freshman Dan Echeveste (a walk-on with good bat). Junior Paul Van Stone (.303 B.A.) is the only returning infielder. Paul is starting his third year and should provide the leadership needed in the infield. He is one of the best hitting shortstops in the league and doesn't make a lot of errors in the field. Replacing third baseman Laci Nagypal (.280 B.A./8 doubles) will be freshman Rob- bie Rogers (Crescenta Valley H.S.). Robbie was an excellent high school athlete who will be given every opportunity to play on a regular basis. Taking over at 2B will be junior Bill Ismay (Yavapai College). Bill batted .380 last year and is a steady defensive player who can make the pivot at second. Junior Tom Seyler will start at first base when he isn't pitching. Tom led Antelope Valley in bat- ting (.377) and HR's. Tom should provide some leadership with his bat and pitching talents. His back-up will be walk-on Brian Locher who batted .331 at Monte Vista H.S. last season in Cupertino, CA. Returning in the outfield will be senior Andre Jacas (left field). Andre is a very exciting player who holds the Torero single season stolen base record of 35 thefts. He should have his best season ever if he stays healthy. His younger brother David returns in center field after redshirting his freshman year due to illness. David appeared in 12 games and had 4 doubles, 2 triples and 6 stolen bases. Sophomore John Slaugh! (.264) saw spot duty last season and should see more action due to his speed and sure glove. Newcomers Doug Brooks (North Idaho JC) and Brian Wisniewski (Valhalla H.S.) will battle for playing time as back-ups. " Barring injury, we will be stronger than last year overall. We have more depth in the infield and more and better players in the outfield. To be successful, we'll have to stop other teams from running on us. I definitely think we have more punch in the line-up than we've had in recent seasons," stated Coach John Cunningham.
