Knowledge Base

Choosing the right vinyl

In any application, labour inevitably accounts for the bulk of your production costs. This makes choosing the right materials vital. By selecting the best possible materials for the job, you can improve quality, enhance productivity and minimise wastage whilst maximizing your profitability. Here is an introduction to the different types of products to help you make your selection. Face films At first sight, there is little to distinguish between the three types of vinyl available today: cast, polymeric calendered and monomeric calendered films. However, the difference between them is obvious after they have been applied for any length of time. The film that looks as good as the day it was applied is manufactured using a process known as casting and is described as a cast film. Cast films A cast film is a premium grade vinyl that starts life as a liquid, which is then allowed to spread out to an extremely thin layer. Cast films are stable, so shrinkage is barely perceptible. Because cast films are thinner and softer, they are easier to cut, weed and apply. Cast films conform over substrate irregularities such as rivets and textures, making them the preferred option for the most extreme exterior applications – especially vehicle wraps. Cast films are also often used for interior or less challenging applications when special or PANTONE® colours are required. • Long term solution • Highly conformable • More dimensionally stable and resistant to shrinkage • Highly resistant to fading Calendered films Calendered films start life as a lump of plastic that is then flattened by being passed through a series of pressure rollers. Though not as high quality as cast films in demanding applications, film produced by this process can nevertheless be adequate in less demanding conditions. Calendered films come in two types: polymeric and monomeric.

Polymeric calendered films have added polymeric plasticiser to reduce shrinkage. However, although they have developed significantly over the years, they still fall short of the stability and durability of cast films. Polymeric films fare much better in exterior applications than monomeric plasticised films but are not suitable for application over surface irregularities such as rivets and corrugations. For less demanding exterior work, polymeric films offer a workable alternative to cast. If there is any doubt as to which film to use, however, avoid risk and choose a cast film. Monomeric calendered films are the least expensive vinyl films. These films are not suitable for demanding exterior applications such as vehicle liveries or fascia signs. The face film of monomeric films is not as stabilised so it will be more prone to shrinkage to reveal the adhesive beneath. Dirt will adhere to this revealed adhesive and will be clearly visible as a sticky, black outline around the lettering and other elements. The sticky black outline is usually only the start of more severe degradation to come. Eventually, the vinyl face film will begin to curl up and flake off like peeling paint. Monomeric films, therefore, are best suited to short-term exterior applications and interior work. Other films In addition to the three basic types of vinyl film described above, the following films are also available. Polyester films usually have a very high gloss finish. They do not stretch so are suitable only for application to flat surfaces. PVF films are chemically inert to the solvents found in staining agents and paint and are typically used as a protective measure where graffiti or high levels of UV are likely. Scrimmed PVC films are used for banners and stretched sign faces because of their enhanced strength. The scrim can have layers of black pigmentation to prevent “show-through” on double-sided banners. Brittle cast films , as the name suggests, are brittle in make up and very difficult to remove. This makes them ideal for security labelling. Hybrid films are typically a combination or construction of two or more materials. Introducing the characteristics of two material types makes it possible, for example, to print on a material with an otherwise non-receptive print surface.

As with all product choices, understanding the broad types of materials will help you make adequate selections but if in doubt, you can always contact Spandex and speak with one of our experts whose job is to guide you to purchase the right products for every application.

Vinyl application tips

Preparation is the key to easy application of cut or printed vinyl graphics. Good surface preparation also ensures a long and trouble-free service life thereafter. We have compiled a range of recommendations and tips that may help you with graphic installation. Clean surfaces Any surface to which vinyl is to be applied must be clean and free of surface treatments – such as waxing – to ensure a good bond. A specialist surface cleaner should be used in all cases even if the application is short term. Newly painted surfaces should be left to cure before graphics are applied. Avoid greasy, rough or porous surfaces. Surfaces prone to out-gassing may produce bubbles under the vinyl and can eventually lead to total failure of the adhesive bond. Such surfaces include polycarbonates, some acrylics, as well as surfaces treated with silicone, wax, sealants or varnish. Particular care must be taken when applying vinyl to other vinyl surfaces such as flexible truck sides, banners and stretched sign-faces. These substrates contain plasticisers, which can migrate to the applied face-film and break down the adhesive. A characteristic “stringing” of the adhesive is often the first sign that plasticiser migration is occurring. Note: nothing can be done to reverse or arrest this condition. To avoid plasticiser migration, it is essential to select the correct vinyl for application to heavily plasticised substrates. Spandex offers a range of suitable materials for these applications – ask your customer service representative for details. Seek specific advice from Spandex where difficult surfaces and extreme environmental conditions are encountered to ensure that the correct material is used and the appropriate preparation is undertaken. We are able to provide detailed specification sheets for most products. If in doubt, ask Spandex for a sample for test purposes.

Types of vinyl application There are two recognised methods for applying vinyl: wet and dry application. The method chosen will, to some extent, be determined by the size and complexity of the graphic image being applied. Dry application: Take the application tape carrying the image and lightly position it onto the substrate. Firmly squeegee the image down, starting at the centre and working carefully outwards, ensuring constant pressure is applied across the entire design. Slowly peel the application tape back on itself, leaving the image in position. Re-squeegee the image to ensure good contact, taking care not to scratch either the image or the substrate. All vinyls presenting bubble free or air egress adhesive system such as ImagePerfect’s PerfectApply (PA) are recommended for dry application method only. Wet application: Big surface areas are often applied using the wet method, as this method helps eliminate air bubbles on larger areas of vinyl. The wet method also allows re-positioning of the image several times if required – a considerable advantage when applying multi-colour logos or other applications requiring precise alignment. Vinyls presenting bubble free or air egress adhesive systems are also recommended for big surface areas (dry application method only). 1. Spray the application solution onto substrate. 2. Position the self-adhesive product on the wet substrate in reverse – i.e. with the application tape in direct contact with the application solution on the substrate. 3. Remove the liner from the self-adhesive product. 4. Spray the exposed adhesive side of the self-adhesive product with the application solution. 5. Turn the product around and apply the wet adhesive side of the self-adhesive product onto the wet substrate. 6. Firmly squeegee from the centre outwards, to remove the surplus application fluid from underneath the self-adhesive product. 7. Once the application tape has dried (30-60 minutes, depending on temperature/humidity), slowly remove it. 8. Re-squeegee the self-adhesive vinyl to ensure good contact with the substrate, taking care to avoid scratching it.

Getting the best out of your digital printer

Using a quality printer surely contributes to the overall success of any printing job. Nevertheless, more factors contribute to achieving a quality end result. In order to get the best out of your printer, we brought together some useful digital printing tips. Invest in quality materials. Labour will inevitably make up the bulk of production cost. Choosing the best possible materials for a job will improve quality and enhance productivity while minimising wastage. Beware of media deformation. Most materials are liable to shrinkage and deformation when printed on with solvent inks. The higher the quality of the material, the less susceptible it is to this process. Handle your media with care. Print media needs to be acclimatised to the production environment at least 12 hours before use. Store your media upright or on prongs to avoid pressure marks on the face film, keep it dust free and always use lint free gloves. Store solvent ink at room temperature. Store ink at around 21°C, away from fire and flammable material. Please consult your local environmental services department for advice on disposal of excess inks and ink waste. Check the ink expiry date. Solvent ink has a limited shelf life and will deteriorate when the expiry date has run out. For optimal print quality, check the ink cartridge case for the expiry date. Use the right profile. A correct ICC media profile and regular re-calibration of your printer are essential to ensure optimal and consistent print quality. Profiles for ImagePerfect™ materials can be found at www.spandex.co.uk. For other brands, please refer to the manufacturer’s website.

Calibrate your printer. Calibration of your printer is essential for consistent quality printing. Calibration - also referred to as density adjustment or linearisation - takes into account changes in the environment, media, ink and status of print heads. Calibration should be performed using either a densitometer or spectrophotometer. Perform daily maintenance. Solvent inkjet printers require regular cleaning and maintenance and down-time should be restricted. Please refer to your printer’s manual or equipment supplier for the daily maintenance routines. If the printer needs to be switched off for longer periods, please follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and procedures carefully to prevent permanent damage to the print heads or other components. Allow enough drying time. Even though solvent ink is touch- dry within minutes, it is strongly advised to allow the material to be cured for a minimum of 48 hours before proceeding to the next production stage. Solvents must be allowed to evaporate fully from the media before lamination, contour cutting or application. Please refer to the manufacturers’ datasheets for exact details. Lamination. Lamination is recommended for applications where prints are exposed to intensive mechanical stress or abrasion, including fleet and floor graphics. Ventilate the production area. When working in an environment already laden with solvent fumes, the curing process will take longer. Air extraction will also help in optimising the production process by stabilising the environment, with improved quality as a direct result. Create a healthy and pleasant working environment. Effective air purification or ventilation is recommended for all types of solvent printers in order to create a healthy and pleasant working environment. Ensure a stable environment. Solvent inkjet printers are sensitive to changes in the environment, including temperature and humidity. For consistent print quality it is recommended to keep your printer in a controlled environment as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.

If you consider these factors when working on a job, you should be able to achieve the best possible results from your printing equipment.

Technical advice and information

Adhesives Adhesives are either aqueous or solvent-based. Most aqueous adhesives can be affected by water and humidity and are not recommended in demanding environmental conditions. Solvent-based adhesives are more widely used and their performance generally matches that of the face film. BEWARE! Bargain vinyls often use cheap adhesive to achieve a low price point. Application tools The right tools make any job easier and digital printing professionals use Spandex tools to guarantee the right result first time. Our many years of experience in the sign and graphics market have enabled us to source the best and most suitable tools for any job. Spandex offers a complete range of branded and ImagePerfect™ tools for every job, including cleaning fluids, application fluids, cloths, banner welders, eyelet presses, knives, squeegees, pliers, tape measures, magnets, heat presses and many more. Temperature ranges Quality vinyl as sold by Spandex is reasonably tolerant of the temperature extremes encountered in the UK for day-to-day use. However, all vinyls have limitations, which are provided throughout this product guide. All temperature limitations should be carefully observed. Storing vinyl Rolls should be stored on end, ideally in their original packaging, until required. Storing material in conditions where high humidity and temperature are encountered should be avoided. As a general rule, normal office temperature and humidity levels are ideal. Before using stored material for printing allow at least 24 hours for the material to attain workshop temperature if it has been stored in conditions that are markedly different to those where it will be worked on.

Working with vinyl With cutting plotters. If you are purchasing vinyl for a cutting plotter, the depth of cut for the type of vinyl being used must be adjusted correctly. Optimum depth / weight settings produce a clean cut that is easy to weed. Generally, cast films require less pressure and depth than calendered films. If vinyl looks as though it has been cut but proves difficult to weed there is a high probability that cutting depth was insufficient or the blade blunt. Vinyl that appears to weed well, but has paper backing adhering to some part of the weeded material has almost certainly been cut too deeply. Spandex recommends that a test cut be used to verify the plotter setting every time the vinyl roll is changed. Note that due to the nature of their use, Spandex cannot offer any warranty on blades or blade holders. With thermal printers. Most vinyls have not been specifically developed for use with a thermal printer, such as a Gerber Edge. Using vinyls for this purpose can result in finished product with varying print and durability qualities. Spandex therefore advises to test for suitability before any print production or to check for a specific assurance of suitability, such as the Edge Ready mark on vinyls . Edge Ready materials meet or exceed very high standards of surface quality, cleanliness and pigment receptivity required for thermal transfer printing. With inkjet printers. There are many considerations that should be observed in order to achieve the best possible outcome when converting media on an inkjet printer. These are explored in more details on the section ‘Getting the best out of your digital printer’. Application tapes Application tapes are used to lift cut or printed self-adhesive lettering and graphics from the vinyl’s silicone-coated paper or plastic liner and to transfer them to the substrate. Application tapes are available in clear and opaque variants. Personal preference is ultimately the biggest factor in deciding which to use. Clear application tape makes applying and registering multiple layers of vinyl easier. Opaque paper application tapes, on the other hand, do not stretch, as is sometimes the case with some clear tapes, and can still be seen through to some useful extent. Additionally, some clear tapes are not suitable where the graphics are left in contact for any significant length of time, as the tape’s adhesive can break down and transfer to the face of the lettering or graphics. Several degrees of adhesive strength are available for application tapes.
