New President to Cheer, Steer Her 'Second Family'

By John Sutherland

The new president of USD's Alumni Association laughs and her brown eyes grow large when a visitor asks about her relationship with the university. "Next to my family, the university has influenced my life more than anything," says Virginia Stehly '83 unhesitantly. "In fact, USD really is my family." That's the unabashed type of enthusiasm and deep-seated loyalty for her alma mater the six-year member of the associa– tion's board of directors intends to make a hallmark of her one– year term directing the association's fortunes. It's a feeling she also hopes to nurture among the rest of USD's graduates. The sister of five other USD grads and one current student - Al '78, Claire '79, Matthew '81, Jerome '85, Neal '87 and Noel '92 - says strengthening the university's Career Network, a network which aids both grads and students exploring the workplace, is among her top priorities as president. She also seeks to make the Alumni Summit, the first of which was held inJanuary, a major annual focal point for increasing alumni involvement. The San Diego native traces her own devotedness to the uni– versity to her student experiences at Alcala Park. She wasn't even sure she wanted to attend college when she enrolled in 1979, but thanks to the gentle urgings of her father and a little encouragement from art professor Therese Whitcomb, she de– cided to give USD a try. Her involvement with USD's rowing program was another major influence on her life, says the former three-time captain of the women's crew team. "Probably the most important thing I learned from rowing is that you can't do anything
