WEIGHTING IN VAIN Mr Bloggs cut logs for a living. Although he weighed 100 kg himself, he could lift a weight of 150 kg with his bare hands. However, he wasn't satisfied with his own strength, so he installed a pulley to help him He tried it out by attaching

a log to the hook and pulling, as the picture shows. What was the heaviest log he could lift in this way? How much could he lift if he stood out in the yard?

JUNE SOLUTION A QUESTION OF BALANCE

The total weight of all the sacks is 123 kg, so they would be balanced best if there were 61 kg in one pannier and 62 kg in the other. This is possible by putting 35 + 16 + 11 = 62 in one, and 24 + 17 + 13 + 7 = 61 in the other. AUGUST FEATURES • Motor control centres and motor protection • Energy Efficiency • Lighting
