International Conference on Automotive Industry 2024

Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic

The following two charts show the evolution of new car registrations in absolute terms and the market shares of the different car groups in the EU market. The European market and new registrations have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the UK’s departure from the EU, as well as by the mergers that have taken place (change of the FCA group and PSA Group to Stellantis or change of Daimler to Mercedez-Benz). Volkswagen still holds the dominant role with a 26% share (more than 2.75 million cars) in 2023 (in 2006 it was 21%). It was the PSA Group that managed to significantly increase its sales and increase its share of the EU market. After the merger with the FCA Group, the new group Stellantis now has almost 20% of the EU market. The Korean brand Hyundai-Kia is another major success story, managing to increase their share from 4% in 2006 to 13% in 2023.
