Smidt wins for second consecutive year Double Up BY TRACY RENCK T he last couple of years, tie-down roper Caleb Smidt has become quite fond of the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede. And for good reason. The Texas cowboy has left the northern Colorado rodeo as the average champ the last two years. Smidt’s latest victory became official July 3 when he won the two-head average with a 17.8-second time at the ProRodeo Tour event. “It’s good to win Greeley back-to-back,” said Smidt, 29. “That’s one of the biggest rodeos over the Fourth of July, and I like that rodeo. Smidt departed Greeley with $7,919, leaving him in second place in the July 9 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. In 2018, Smidt won the two-head Greeley average with a 17.0-second time. Smidt, the reigning PRCA Tie-down Roping World Champion, said his performance in Greeley saved his Cowboy Christmas run. “My Cowboy Christmas was terrible,” he said. “The only check I won was at Greeley, so I was dang sure glad to get what I got over at Greeley.” When Smidt wonThe American at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, March 2-3, with a shootout-round time of 6.97 seconds, it changed his rodeo plans for the season. With $90,913 already earned this season, Smidt should have no problem qualifying for theWrangler National Finals Rodeo again. “I only went to seven rodeos this winter, and Reno (Nev.) was my eighth rodeo,” Smidt said. “I like being at home (in Bellville, Texas) with my family. I’m going to go through Dodge City (Kan.), Lovington (N.M.) and Lawton (Okla.) (through Aug. 10) and then I’ll go home. I’m not going to the Northwest. There’s no sense of putting miles on my horse and my family and my rig if I don’t have to.”
