Clayton Hass wins Cody Stampede for second time BY MATT NABER M ost ProRodeo athletes go their entire career without scoring a win at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede, but steer wrestler Clayton Hass did it for the second time since 2016. “Both were huge wins, and you can’t say one was better than the other,” Hass said. Competition was tight at the 100th edition of the Cody Stampede, with one- tenth of a second the deciding factor in Hass winning $8,528 and a healthy boost in the ProRodeo Tour Standings. “It’s a ton of money to win on the Fourth of July,” Hass said. “There are guys who will win one, two or even three checks but not come close to that.” Hass, 35, is a three-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2014-16) and has won more than $1 million since his rookie year in 2005. The 2019 season has been a season of change for Hass. His previous mount, Cadillac, the PRCA | AQHAHorse of the Year in 2014 and 2016, retired after Rodeo Austin (Texas), March 30. Fortunately, Hass has been working on his new ride, Benz, for the last couple years. “He can really run and gives you a good go,” Hass said. “When Cadillac went down last year, I rode him (Benz) last summer. He’s come into himself for sure.” Benz also took Hass’ traveling partner, Dakota Eldridge, to the winner’s circle at the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede. “We didn’t get to as many rodeos as we could have, but we got to the best ones,” Hass said. Before his Cowboy Christmas run, Hass was 32nd in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. After Cowboy Christmas, Hass was up to 22nd, putting him $7,343 away from breaking into the Top 15 and getting to the Finals. “We have a long year ahead of us, and the next few weeks of rodeo are just as important,” Hass said. “We have a bunch of opportunities to win over the next month, so I’ll keep knocking them down to win as much as I can.” He came close to making his fourthWrangler NFR qualification the last two years, ranking 17th in 2017 and 21st in 2018. “I’d missed the last couple (of NFRs), and I’ve got a lot of work to do, but I’m on the upper climb,” Hass said.
