RODEO ROUNDUP

HOME OF CHAMPIONS RODEO RED LODGE, MONT. Nyegaard makes most of chances

Tie-down roper Clint Nyegaard has been taking it slow the last couple seasons while seasoning his horse, Boon. Over the Fourth of July, Nyegaard and Boon showed that seasoning is paying off by winning the Home of Champions Rodeo with an 8.0-second run. Nyegaard cashed in for $2,911. “It was really good,” said Nyegaard, 28. “It actually started raining right after they finished the first round of calf-roping. I wasn’t too excited about it. But it let up a little bit, kind of a light drizzle. I haven’t rodeoed much this year. I just came out over the summer to make a run at it and get my qualifications for next year.” Nyegaard enjoyed a slower-than-usual Cowboy Christmas, going to fewer rodeos during the Fourth run. It has him and Boon looking ahead to the 2020 season. “No doubt about it,” he said. “The horse and I are rested for sure. I’ll try to go hard next year.”

Tie-down roper Clint Nyegaard notched his first Red Lodge win with an 8.0- second run, nearly a half- second faster than his comp- etition.

Team ropers Dustin Egusquiza and Jake Long didn’t enjoy their Fourth of July run until they got to the Black Hills Roundup. The pair posted a time of 4.3 seconds to win the Hall of Fame rodeo and take home $4,505 apiece. “It was a tough Fourth of July for us, so it was a good way to end it,” Egusquiza said. “It turned a slow week into a decent week.”

For Egusquiza, it was the second consecutive year to win in Belle Fourche. “I like that set-up,” he said. “It suits me.” Long was in fourth place in the world standings with $68,347 as of July 9. Egusquiza was 19th. The two are planning to continue to rope together the rest of the season, Egusquiza said.
