DEDICATION

4

To Saint Didacus de Alcala, whose name was given to San Diego

and to its historical mission, we dedicate our ALCALA.

Saint Didacus-a Spanish Franciscan, Saint Didacus-a former toller of bells. Your life chimed the bells of

Humility, as you fulfilled the office of infirmarian in the Convent of Ara Coeli; Prudence, as director and

guardian of the religious community on the Canary Island of Fortaventura; Sanctity, as you interceded in favor of those who were miraculously cured in your name.

Guide us, encourage us, teach us, to cherish the sacred bells in our lives.

Help us to treasure our chimes of Humility, Prudence and Sanctity in order that they may reverberate vigorously Throughout our own Alcala on the hill.

Delle Willett, Cathy Lindseth, Margo Dragolovich, Sandy Schadewald, and Cynthia Hunter being observed by Mrs. Hill at Art Class.

All men should strive to learn, before they die, what they are running from, and to, and why. The members of the Class of '66 did quite a bit of running this September, but there might have been a few times when they weren't too sure where they were going or where they had been. There were even a few despondent Why's sobbed, especially when they discovered that the activities of Freshman Week included the start of classes, which have a habit of interrupting social life. However, thanks *o th e valiant efforts of a brigade of Big Sisters and Big Brothers, the casualty list was small. After the ice had been broken between roommates and groups of friends had gotten together, the freshmen settled into the college routine of classes—and week ends. Led by Mary Pat, Donna, and Ann, the class started to discover itself. Jean, Mary J„. d Sue, actually brought order to the awkward tribe, and the success of the Freshmen Follies shows that Jan, Cynthia, and Lynne Anne, were the officers of a pretty efficient crew. If anyone doubted its ability, he was convinced by the job done on the Toy Drive under Marsha, Patti, and Anne. After surviving finals and being fortified by their retreat they started new classes again but this time as members of a real class. They didn't have to run any more; they knew where they were going and how to get there. The Supper Dance went smoothly (and profitably), and the class party showed that they were a successful group as a social unit as well as a parliamentary body. Mary Jo, Jean, Anne, and Donna, knew they could undertake projects and have them done well; after all—how could the Class of '66 fail, with a "guardian angel" like Mary Pat?

Last year's wide-eyed freshmen were this year's confident Big Sisters, intro ducing the newest class to college life. The thought in September was "It's good to be back," and the sophomores accepted their new status with its new responsibilities.

Reminiscing about their Freshmen Follies, they put on a Sophomore Surprise to conclude the annual Thanksgiving Food and Clothing Drive, and also to get together for one more song and dance. The dancing continued, too, as they spon sored a dozen Friday-nighters after the Get-Acquainted Mixer that had opened the school year. And the entire class must have been seen below decks on the S. S. Marietta at the wonderful Inter-fraternity Boat Dance in October. Mid-term examinations were taken in stride and sophomores became "buddies" for the freshmen. Then it was home for Thanksgiving, and the Christmas season was rung in shortly afterward at the Bishop's Party, a tradition to sophomores by now. Almost before Christmas decorations disappeared, semester finals were due; the mid-year retreat following was a welcome rest for all. Second semester was a medley of basketball games, laboratory experiments and term papers. Thanks to the newly-finished gymnasium and pool, the class could even write home about swimming in California's winter sunshine. The excitement of Homecoming basketball had hardly faded, when committees were appointed for the farewell dance of 1963, and all the careful planning cul minated in the memorably beautiful Bal des Fleurs. After the Ball, it was back to work for finals. Then, almost too quickly, the class of '65 had their first degrees and half of their college career behind them.

High spirited members of the junior class returned to Alcala this fall eager

to begin their first year as upper classmen. Lead by president Patti Murphy, vice-

president Nancy Erhardt, secretary Stephanie Mayfield and treasurer Linda Rahl

and with the guidance of class moderator Mother Furay, the juniors planned a busy

year. The first class projects were the sale of U.S.D. calendars and a fun filled fair

planned to raise money for the Autumn Informal, which was enjoyed by the entire

school at the Vacation Village this October.

Class parties and other activities arranged by social chairmen, Polly Holmberg

and Margaret Morgan, made November and the Thanksgiving season an active

time for the Class of 1964. Adding to the excitement of the Christmas season and

holiday atmosphere was the arrival of the junior's coveted class rings.

A stimulating retreat heralded the spirit-filled spring semester. Who else but

the juniors could have so thoroughly exploited the fun-promising potentials that

were present at the Upper Division Supper Dance? With the coming of warm April

days, the enthusiastic "lower-uppers" were found in the patios chatting about their

fashion show, which was held in May. As summer vacation approached, the juniors

could look back on a wonderfully unified year, confident that their return in Sep

tember as Seniors would herald the arrival of new challenges, new achievements

and a culmination of spiritual riches that would serve as guideposts for a lifetime.

Four yesteryears ago we entered college as the hope of tomorrow. Now as we graduate into the world of today, we pause momentarily to view in fast motion the enriching events of our college years. Fall 1959 found us converging in the halls from literally everywhere and were quickly incorporated into the student body with the generous help of our big sisters and our enthusiastic moderator Mother Furay. Before long we expressed our appreciation for this friendly welcome in our Follies, "Roman Daze." By mid-term time we were thoroughly impressed with the rigorousness of academic life and somehow survived examinations with the needed encouragement of our mysterious "buddies." In November we participated in the cap and gown Requiem Mass for deceased USD students, in the Immaculata. December brought one of our class to the Catholic faith and she, Phyllis Doran, was baptized in our chapel. Peck's Chuck Wagon rumbled to a halt early in February and inaugurated a class tradition of home parties for the residents. Around that time many of us were suffering through the fragrances of dissections in biology lab and developed a firm purpose to dissect no more. A class picnic at the Presidio in March ended with some of our group gleefully swinging around the flagpole. "Trial by Jury," our operetta, was presented to the student body in early May. It was an animated performance, though perhaps not professional. Then, suddenly, it was the end of the year. September, I960, brought most of us back to our hilltop campus, tanned and ready to give the freshmen the welcome we had been given. Under the quiet guidance of Mother Patch we developed and spread our school spirit at nearly every opportunity. The first of our spirit-building endeavors was to sponsor a "No-Host Luncheon" and Pool party at the Hotel Del Coronado for our little sisters. Then "Coach Barbara" Pecarovich and her brawny football "team" con tributed significantly to the spirit before a game in which the Pioneers defeated the Marines 21-20. Another morale booster, a certain Western skit which was planned and rehearsed for the USD-MCRD game never premiered—fortunately— so agree those who were involved. After the annual retreat, we successfully co- sponsored an all-school Valentine Dance at the Grant Hotel. In April two of the sophomore members of the tennis team, Diane Corkill and Martha Spiers, helped carry the school name to the intercollegiate tennis tournament at Ojai. Our final contribution to the spirit of the College blossomed with the pink and white decor of our Bal Des Fleurs.

The following autumn found us adjusting to life as upperclassmen and life on the other side of the bridge. With Mother Shaffer to help us we began a year which abounded in "firsts." It began with the experiment of having our Autumn Informal both in the Rose Room and the Palm Patio. After nine "come as you are" parties and Dr. Kocourek's ethics tests, gave us a new topic of conversation. And the twist gave us something novel to complain about—tortured muscles! Mixed parties at the homes of Dolly Barr, Patsy Buckley and Pat Quirk, were among that year's innovations. In April we sent our first delegation in two years to the Model United Nations. Their chairman, Kathy Day, and eight other juniors were initiated into the intrigues and caucusing of intercollegiate politics. At the Mad-Hatter's Party that spring, Dede Fiorino and Mary Olive Chambers made their debut in the hat fashion world as "The High and Mighty." When our college rings arrived, both we and the juniors from the Men's college had them blessed by Bishop Buddy at a ceremony in our chapel—thus originating another tradition. Our final "first" came with the appearance of a groom, John Rodee for bride Pam Jorday, in our May Fashion Show luncheon. Fall 1962 brought us together with serious plans now made for the future. Under the able counsel of veteran senior moderator Mother McShane, we assumed the leadership of the school and began final preparations for our roles in society. Bulletin-boarditis hit a major portion of the class as courses were pursued leading to elementary and secondary credentials. Senior pictures and organizing our fashionably early Christmas Ball at the La Jolla Country Club occupied much of our time. The Cuban crisis, the opening of the Ecumenical Council, and voting in the Brown-Nixon gubernatorial election also claimed our attention. On the bright side we experienced a near epidemic of engagement rings (that preluded a wedding- filled summer). By January we were accustomed to using the privilege of the new circulating library and sometimes found time to enjoy the new USD swimming pool. During the second semester we either waded through lesson plans or com miserated with those who did and by May we were certain that we would never forget the title of our theology book. As we take inventory of our hectically happy college years, we find that we are deeply appreciative of the values and principles instilled in us by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. But most of all, we are anxious to carry these principles to the world.
