Another fabulous Regents Review full of highlights from this term.

In this Regents Review I would like to share with you our Project 2020 news: After an intense phase of remodelling, refurbishment and renewal of equipment to the highest standards, the new ‘Design Hub’ has been completed. Students will benefit from the use of the new building costing nearly £2M after Christmas, including use of our fully refurbished Kiln. Curriculum subjects within the ‘Design Hub’ consist of a state-of-the-art food tech and resistant material workshop rooms. The last time this building was able to be remodelled to this extent was in 1951. As the Headteacher, I am very proud of the wonderful curriculum offering within the new ‘Design Hub’ and know that the staff are excited to teach in the new building and that the students will be engaged and proud to learn within it. To end this term I found a Christmas poem that emulates the ethos of Regents Park. It’s coming up to Christmas, We have been blessed with the things we need…

Sparsholt College Sparsholt College is the rural destination for a practical based 14-16 animal management course. Students learn to care for a wide range of animals, birds and reptiles in enjoyable practical sessions, together with linked classroom learning. Grace in Year 10 has had the privilege of looking after Roland at Sparsholt College. Roland is a particularly friendly rat who enjoys being handled and having his cage cleaned out.

Armistice Day On the eleventh hour of Monday 11th November, staff and students observed a two minute silence. Once again, Mr Barron played the ‘Last Post’ to mark the occasion. A group of students came to school dressed in their Cadet uniforms and took on the role of selling poppies throughout the day to support ‘The Royal British Legion’.

Bike Safety As the evenings grow darker it is essential that students take extra care on the roads when travelling to and from school. Please ensure that your child’s bike has lights and working breaks. Your child should also be wearing a helmet. In addition to this, it is imperative that pupils ride safely when on the roads to avoid any accidents. Failure to do this could result in the school refusing the right to allow pupils to ride to school for their own safety.

Christmas Trolley Once again Regents Park promoted the Christmas trolley organised by the Senior Leadership Team. We would like to thank everyone who has helped support this.

Regents Park is very proud to annouce that we have raised £309.53 at our Christmas Fair. This money will be donated between Save the Children & Yellow Door.

Year 7 WOW! What a term we have had with Year 7. I am overwhelmed by the talent that has joined our team here at Regents Park. We have had an exceptional start to the term here. It has been wonderful getting to know all of our students within the team and their families. I personally enjoyed meeting so many of you at the Open Evening and have met with many of you as the term has progressed. It is incredible to know that students have settled in so well here at Regents Park and that students feel valued and supported. “The teachers put the effort into the lessons to help us learn” - Lola “I like all the teachers because they help me out and I learn lots” - Lewis “I really like the staff as they are so supportive” - Oliwia “I enjoy RPCC as it is so big. If you need help, the teachers are supportive” - Charlotte “Ever since I joined the school, I have learned more than ever before, I like this about RPCC” - Salvo As the biggest cohort starting at Regents Park we didn’t know what to expect, but I am so proud to have such an incredible team working alongside me in order to support all students in Year 7. We have had an amazing PSHE day, learning about healthy relationships and also planning for our future at school and beyond.

We had 50% of the year group involved in a great rewards session and Year 7 thoroughly enjoyed this event. As a year group, we have started to work with colleges to look at opportunities to support with their ideas for the future as well as guiding them towards their upcoming career choices - there will be more information to follow on this. Christmas is a time of reflection as well as opportunities to look towards the New Year and new challenges that may come and I would like to pose a challenge to every Year 7, which is to please try something new at school next year a club, event or a trip. Regents Park really has a lot to offer and it would be great to have more students trying something new.

Year 8 It seems not too long ago that our year group had their first mention in the Regents Review back in 2018, now a year on the students have settled in, developed fantastic friendships and are growing into the fantastic young students that represent the RPCC ethos so well. In this term alone, the students have many exciting opportunities, such as an overnight stay in Ypres,

Belgium. On this trip they have been lucky enough to experience the historical battlefields and getting hands on with the rich history it holds. They have also been a part of the fantastic production team and cast of ‘A Night at the Musicals’, which showcased an array of talent across many year groups in the school. The Year 8 boys football team have been undefeated this season and have performed respectfully and relentlessly to achieve this status.

First of all, well done to all of Year 9 for completing the first term of their GCSE’s, I am very proud of the maturity pupils have shown towards their work. As you may be aware Miss Grassie has taken over the role as Head of Year 9. I would like to give you some context as to why. I have been teaching for 10 years now and I have worked in a pastoral role as a Head of Year for over 6 years and although I have found it thoroughly rewarding, especially supporting my year group since they joined Regents Park, recently my personal circumstances have changed significantly and as a result I need to spend more time focusing on those. I will be remaining as a member of staff at Regents Park and I am excited to spend more time focusing on my teaching and contributing to making science an outstanding department.

GENERAL NEWS Our Zero Heroes (0 Behaviour Points)

students develop into young adults and a pleasure to oversee their progressions inside and outside of the classroom. Some students have sat their first GCSE exams, have begun attending revision sessions and have contributed towards the school in several ways. We have students who have taken part in interviews in school, students who have represented the school in a variety of different ways such as sporting fixtures and musical productions. Our Year 10 College Council have created ideas which have changed elements of the school and we have also created a mentoring scheme which has allowed an extra support network for Year 7 students. I am really proud of all of the students this year who have shown in a variety of lessons, that they can work independently but also challenge themselves to be the best they can be. It is a pleasure to take a seat in Year 10 lessons and watch all of the hard work by the students which has been shown in the extremely high standards of work we see them produce every day. It is very rewarding to see the students enjoying their studies and doing all they can to be the best they can be. The year group have proven themselves to have a wide range of talents and I have greatly enjoyed continuing our journey together into Year 10 at Regents Park. I wish you all a brilliant Christmas and look forward to seeing you refreshed and recharged for Term 2 where

Year 11

At the point of writing this for the Regents Park autumn addition, Year 11s are currently sitting their final mock exams. It seems an age ago that cohort 2015 (as they are also known within school) sat their CATS and their first Year 7 exams in the hall, and each year that has passed has been about preparing them for their final May GCSE exams. During the autumn term, we have had numerous colleges in to showcase their courses to the cohort in assemblies. It is great to hear of so many students getting interviews for colleges, preparing for life post Regents Park. The advice for students is to have a couple of options in terms of courses and colleges to ensure students have a place come September after results day in August. Throughout the autumn term I have been monitoring students who have been applying themselves in all lessons. Students who have demonstrated high levels of effort in lessons have received a letter home with £10 worth of shopping vouchers.

PSHE & Careers Careers Festival – Friday 18th October

Our biggest event of the year and another success, the Careers Festival involved numerous staff from 25 different external employers/providers along with our wonderful staff. It had the whole school off timetable for the day looking at different aspects of business skills and future pathways. Year 7 & 8 focussed on business skills and team building. Year 9 had the opportunity to go speed dating with a range of different employers and learn about different jobs that people do. Year 10 were investigating how to join the world of work with CV and interviews being practiced. Year 11 was about preparing themselves for life at college with the skills they need to apply and succeed. Year 10 Work Experience Year 10 will be taking part in work experience the week beginning 18th May to 22nd May. All students have been issued with green or pink forms depending on if they are finding their own placement. If you still have these forms at home, please return them as soon as possible so that the health and safety checks can take place. Those who have returned pink forms will be having sessions to support their applications in the new year.

Year 11 PSHE Day 23rd September On this day, students covered sessions including: money management, mental health, careers, dangers of pornography, target setting and smoking/ drugs. Year 11 College Applications The deadline for applying to Peter Symonds College has now passed. If you have yet to apply to college/s then you need to be taking those steps now. Ideally apply to a couple of them so that you have a choice. Most colleges have an online application system so this can be done quickly from home. Some colleges may ask for a personal statement and we as a school can support this. Year 7 PSHE Day Year 7 students had a great day covering a range of PSHE topics on 19th November. All students were off timetable for the day and rotating around a carousel of different sessions covering: • Fire Safety • Anti Social Behaviour • Team Building - delivered by YMCA • Mental Health - delivered by Solent Mind • Relationships - delivered by Yellow Door • Respect • Google Classroom It was really good to see both students engaging with all the topics and to hear their positive feedback of how the sessions have benefitted them.

Year 11 Apprenticeships For those students looking to apply for

apprenticeships, we will be running a session going through how to find and apply for these courses. Being accepted as an apprentice can be very competitive, so we would advise you have a backup pathway through a college either on academic or vocational courses should you not be successful. The significant majority of Year 11 have now had a 1:1 careers appointment with our school’s careers advisor. Every student seen has/will be issued an action plan from their meeting which identifies their next steps they need to take for their educational pathways. Year 9 LionHeart Challenge

and were totally committed to doing a good and thorough job of their roles. They absolutely loved being in the school and having the opportunity to be of some help to the students. All in all, myself, our team of Business Coaches and the WestQuay Team, felt really privileged to have had the opportunity to work with the school and students - it was an uplifting day from start to finish.

We have been reflecting on this fantastic day and the Year 9 students are still talking about it! We were so proud to witness their commitment and bravery on the day and what fantastic ambassadors for Regents Park they were too! Below is an extract from Clare McDonald’s (CEO of LionHeart Challenge) review and feedback from the day: Our team and also the WestQuay judges were absolutely blown away by the dedication in which the students worked, pushing themselves forward into business roles that I’m sure were very new to them with courage and dedication. It struck me when I was training the presenters on the stage, how very much they wanted to do well in the presentation, they were really, truly committed to the day, and representing all the hard work done by their teams. There was a lovely genuine approach by the students to all the tasks they undertook, and we knew for sure, that they were putting everything into their teams and projects. When they stood up to receive their feedback by Andy Collyer - GM of WestQuay, I felt very moved to see how each of the teams listened to his detailed feedback (Andy and his colleagues were lovely too)

We couldn’t be more proud! Well done Year 9!

During this term, the Creative Writer’s Club began with entrants submitting pieces for two Young Writer’s competitions: first person poetry and a short horror story. It’s a pleasure to announce that two of our entrants have been chosen for publication in Through Their Eyes – A Whisper of Words. The Young Writers publication will be released on 14th February 2020 and will be displayed in the National Archives of the British Library and our RPCC Author’s Corner in the school library. After a busy start, this has been followed up with sessions on character development, monologues and we will finish the term on short stories with a winter theme. The new student librarians have been learning how to keep the library in good shape and some have also helped to set up the book stall for the Regents Park Christmas Fair. We have had a meeting to give a welcome to our new recruits and this week we have introduced a new reward system in the library including a new certificate for services to the library. There is a fun, festive feel in the library this year as the decorations are up and students are invited to make snowflakes and paper chains. The season was celebrated in the last week of term when we had a festive theme for our Thursday quiz and we displayed our first after school documentary in the library featuring the story behind the female warriors that helped inspire characters from the Marvel film, Black Panther.

Inspiring Year 8 We were delighted to welcome Duke Harrison- Hunter to school on Wednesday 20th November to address Year 8. His inspirational presentation detailed events in his life which have led to pursue a career working with children in roles such as coaching, mentoring and motivational speaking. Some feedback from Year 8 students: “I like the 5 minute challenge in the morning, I am definitely going to try it.” “It was good to see so many positives for him after the bad things he had gone through.” “I found it REALLY interesting and he gave us good advice.”

English

The English department have been busy this term! Here are some things that have been happening: • Students have been invited to a brilliant book- swapping service at lunchtimes which has been encouraging them to develop a love of reading. • English Enrichment has started once again this term which focusses on the top 10% of students in English (Years 7-9). Students have been discussing philosophical dilemmas in preparation for academic writing which they aren’t usually required to do in school. This adds that extra layer of challenge and the students are loving the discussions!

• The department has been working in association with the Southampton Cooperative Learning Trust and schools across the city on a project called ‘In Other Words’ which has involved students writing their own poetry and experiencing performances and workshops from talented and exciting poets.

Mathematics

Chasing Grade 9 This term Miss Birch has been working with some of our Year 11s, who are working hard to achieve a grade 9 in mathematics. Every Wednesday they attend the grade 9 revision club, where we are solving questions like the following: Along with this revision, students are completing extra mathematics work in tutor, which extends them beyond the GCSE syllabus! To fuel their interest in mathematics past GCSE, lessons regularly include A-level questions to challenge our keen mathematicians.

Year 8 have been applying their mathematics skills to different images. Mr Gates’ class found lots of mathematics from the above image they had conversations about the points of the balls, the angles of hitting the white ball into other balls, the crowd paying money, the volume of the water bottle in the background and the prize money!

Fingers crossed all their hard work pays off!

Curriculum Specification - GCSE All students follow the GCSE course - Exam Board Edexcel in mathematics over Years 9, 10 and 11. The GCSE course aims to give students a sound and confident grasp of mathematics. Students are required to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and skills in the following assessment objectives:

Mathematic Riddles Three Guys at A Hotel Riddle Three guys rent a hotel room for the night. When they get to the hotel they pay the $30 fee, then go up to their room. Soon the bellhop brings up their bags and gives the lawyers back $5 because the hotel was having a special discount that weekend. So the three lawyers decide to each keep one of the $5 dollars and to give the bellhop a $2 tip. However, when they sat down to tally up their expenses for the weekend they could not explain the following details: Each one of them had originally paid $10 (towards the initial $30), then each got back $1 which meant that they each paid $9. Then they gave the bellhop a $2 tip. However, 3 x $9 + $2 = $29 They couldn’t figure out what happened to the other dollar. After all, the three paid out $30 but could only account for $29.

Assessment is through three written papers each 1.5 hours long, in the summer of Year 11. Two of the papers will require the use of a scientific calculator and the third will be non-calculator. Students will be tested regularly during the GCSE course. Set changes may take place on the basis of these assessment results. Students can come along to room 32 from 8.00am on Thursday mornings to benefit from this extra help but should also be revising independently at regular intervals at home, reviewing an array of topics covered over the past four years with particular attention given to those highlighted in the recent mock examinations as an area of weakness. Each student will be receiving an individual feedback sheet based on their performance in the mock examinations to indicate areas of strength and weakness. Students can then

Sociology As you may have read in the Year 9 section of this Regents Review, I have taken over the role as Head of Year 9. Due to this and a slight change in my timetable, I am very pleased to announce that Mrs K Anibaba has joined the Sociology teaching team. With our current Year 9s being the fourth cohort to be offered GCSE Sociology, we have taken this opportunity to review and restructure our curriculum. This will shortly be available to view on the Regents Park Community College website. With this in mind, the two new Year 9 classes have begun their GCSE option with an introduction to Sociology and a first look at the basic principles of the Numeracy Ninjas This is an initiative to help improve student’s basic skills. Each year the GCSE examiners highlight the impact of poor basic skills in leading to errors and we feel that the work we are doing, coupled with student’s own independent work to improve their times tables, multiplication and division, will be key in enabling students to make good progress in mathematics and consequently, enable them to

face the challenges of the new GCSE with increased confidence. Students in Year 7 and 8 have a weekly Numeracy Ninjas lesson within their tutor time. Students are given 5 minutes to complete up to 30 numeracy questions. They mark their answer and award themselves a belt. The black belt is the most coveted as this means full marks have been scored. Rowling TP have consistently scored the highest in Year 7 and Branson CSF in Year 8.

Year 7 and 8 students were asked about their views on mathematics. Students very positively agreed that they do well in mathematics, scored good marks and learnt concepts quickly. They also acknowledged that they learned new ideas quickly and easily. A lot of students think that mathematics one of their best subject with only a small number indicating that they did not like mathematics.

‘Social Stratification’ unit. We have explored how different societies around the world are structured, globalisation of big brand companies and looked at how social class systems might be viewed by the 4 main sociological perspectives. We are now moving on to the introductory unit for ‘Families’. Likewise, in Year 10 the students have completed the main section of the ‘Social Stratification’ unit and are now beginning to apply their knowledge to exam based answers and skills in the lead up to the Year 10 January exams. Wishing them the best of luck for their revision over the Christmas break.

Well done to Year 11 who have recently sat their November mock exams. From these exams, we have been able to identify our strengths and weakness as a class and will be using these to form our revision sessions in the run up to their final exams. These seem to be creeping up on us far too quickly! Lastly, I would like to wish you all a brilliant Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Science Mr Grainey arranged for many of our Year 8 students to attend Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. Students who went on the trip got to get hands on with the science, technology, engineering and maths exhibits, sparking their imagination and interest on STEM relating careers for the future. The trip gave students a brilliant opportunity to take their learning form beyond the classroom.

Year 10 and 11 students have been working really hard in preparation for their forthcoming mock exams and ultimately their summer GCSE examinations. It has been brilliant to see so many students making the extra effort to attend our Friday period 7 support sessions in the library. A change in approach to this year means that Year 10 students will be sitting their chemistry GCSE this summer. Our Year 11 students will now be sitting separate sciences, giving them the opportunity to achieve an extra GCSE. Tassomai continues to be a success and a useful tool for revision at Key Stage 4 (KS4). Now with our new Key Stage 3 subscription, Year 7 and 8 are also using Tassomai for their homework.

ICT Computer

Year 9 have had a good start to their GCSEs and have been looking at system architecture and algorithms. After school intervention for Year 11 will take place on Thursdays after school in room 21.

Science – KS4 Year 11 have been preparing for their mock exams, after school revision will start in the new year in preparation for their GCSE exams. They will help them to develop their core knowledge to support them with their final exam in May. Year 10 will start their NEA (non-exam

iMedia – KS4 iMedia students undertake 3 controlled assessments covering different topics within IT. Year 11 students have now started their third and final controlled assessment which is creating a website for a travel blogger. After school sessions are taking place for those needing to improve their previous piece of work. Year 10 have completed their first controlled assessment which was to produce a science fiction book cover using photo editing skills. They are now beginning to research and plan their second controlled assessment which will be a website promoting Southampton to tourists and visitors. Year 9 have focussed on key skills and exam topics to prepare them for the assessment process. They have just started their first controlled assessment on book covers. After school intervention for all years takes place on Wednesday and Thursday after school in rooms 5 & 6.

KS3 IT Our new Year 7 groups have been exploring both the hardware and software that a computer uses, specifically the components and peripherals that make them up and how they are classified. They are now using a range of skills with software creating different office based tasks. Year 8 have developed their knowledge from last year about the hardware in a computer and making decisions about how to construct an appropriate computer, how much ram, what processor speed etc. They are now making progress with their website skills producing a microsite on the topic of e-safety.

A Night at the Musicals On November 20th & 21st Regents Park showcased the immense talent of our students once again. The creative arts and DT department presented a musical evening to rival the West End! Students from every year group performed songs and scenes from six well-known musicals and the audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Notable solo performances from Caitlin-Rose Harnett, Ellie Hartley, Emily Riches, Cassie Connell, Sarah Rek and Lily Hayward and as always the band surpassed themselves! The Year 9 dance group choreographed the songs and Year 7 technical ‘trainees’ ran sound and lighting with our long-standing experts George Collins and Joshua Wellman-Bisson. Two amazing nights of performance! Please keep an eye on our website for when auditions start for next year’s production.

Nuffield Theatre On Monday 2nd December, Liam Gifford - the Youth Theatre Director from the Nuffield Theatre visited the Year 10 performing arts group and delivered a physical theatre workshop, which linked to their explorative coursework. The group thoroughly enjoyed the time and experience with new ways of developing storylines and exploring difference styles of performance. Liam also told us about the Nuffield Youth Theatre project Summer 2020 and has organised auditions for students who are interested.

Year 8 Textiles Students have been inspired this term by aboriginal art. They have been experimenting with tie dye, stencilling and hand stitching to create their own unique designs. Students are looking forward to using the new textile room in the design hub. Above is an article highlighting the importance for the need of creative subjects - looking forward to the opening of the ‘Design Hub’! Daily Telegraph Report Surgery students have lost the ability to perform simple tasks like stitching and sewing up patients because they spend so little time using their hands and so much time staring at screens, a professor has warned.  Roger Kneebone - professor of surgical education at Imperial College, London believes the quest for academic knowledge has come at the expense of physical dexterity such as cutting things out, making things.

Year 11 GCSE Art Mock Exam Some lovely work has been developed in the Year 11 mock exams. A reminder that art rooms will be open Wednesday and Thursday evenings for the final push to complete coursework.

Exam papers for the final externally set assignment will be given out in January.

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS Humanities Battlefields

a local restaurant followed by the Last Post at the Menin Gate - here our students were able to pay their respects to the fallen heroes, which they did with exceptional respect and pride. The following day after breakfast we began our drive down to the Somme where we met our guide and in very soggy conditions we saw the Lochnagar Crater at la Boisselle, Pozière. This was a crater that was caused by a shell on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme and it was so loud that it is rumoured to have been heard in Buckingham Palace! The soil from the crater went up to 1km in the air and left a massive hole in the ground at the Canadian memorial at Newfoundland Park. Here, students were again lucky enough to experience the confines of a trench and were surprised at how close the enemy was. It was foggy and cold which added to the whole experience of the day. Students were told about how the soldiers needed to keep quiet especially in foggy times as their voices would carry across No Man’s Land. After this we headed to the Thiepval Memorial – the largest memorial in Europe. On it there were 42,000 names of lost or missing soldiers from WW1. Again students were shocked at the amount of names on this memorial. We also saw different graves to the ones visited at Essex farm and Tyne Cot – these were the French graves that were more simple and less ornate than the British graves as the French could not afford the limestone. After the temperatures plummeted further we made the decision to head back early but the students had a full experience of the sites and felt that they had learned a lot.

At 05:00am on Thursday 14th November, 5 teachers and 44 Year 8 students departed Southampton for a visit to the Battlefields in Belgium. After a pleasant journey to Folkestone and a quick shuttle crossing we arrived in a cold and damp France for the journey down to Ypres. As we arrived in Ypres the cloud came in thicker and the temperature dropped but we still managed to see all the sites. We started at Essex Farm cemetery where the students were told about the first battle of Ypres and were shown graves from unknown soldiers who died at the battle but their bodies were never recovered. We also learned about the youngest fatality of the war, a 15 year old boy called Valentine Joe Strudwick who had lied about his age to join up. The students were shocked by the fact that he was not much older than them. Our next stop was some trenches where students could see how cramped and confined the conditions were. From here we went onto Tyne Cot cemetery. This was where one of our students laid the school wreath as a mark of respect for the fallen heroes of WW1. This was a very proud moment for Felix Dobson to lay the school wreath. After this we went to the Passchendaele museum which was a living history museum that students could explore and get a real sense of the cramped conditions in the dugouts and trenches. The students had a great time here exploring all the different parts of trenches such as the kitchen and toilet areas! The evening was spent at leisure getting dinner at
