75th ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR BAR MITZVAHS continued

SHERM and his wife, Bubbles, went to the same grade school and were high school sweethearts. Over more than eighty years and the sixty-six years of their marriage, they managed to accumulate a lot of memorabilia kept in a corrugated box in the basement of their Chicago home. Their grade school report cards, high school yearbooks and loads of pictures starting from their own kindergartens to their children’s birthdays. There was some other meaningful junk like the menu from their wedding. When they moved permanently to Frenchman’s Creek three years ago, that accumulation was brought to their home and was kept in the closet of one of their guest bedrooms. Last summer, they decided to see what great things they saved for over eighty years. On one eventful Sunday, they spent most of the day looking and laughing. In an envelope, they also found Sherm’s invitation to his Bar Mitzvah Inviting relatives and his parent’s friends and of all things, his seventy-five year old Bar Mitzvah speech. A copy of that speech was presented to everyone present at the grill room dinner. FRANK could only remember one thing from his Bar Mitzvah. Although he performed the usual synagogue ritual, his parents in celebration of the great event took him on a holiday to Miami Beach, Florida. They went by the train, The Orange Blossom Special, going from New York to Miami. While in central Florida the train was hit head on by another train. Frank was thrown down, bruised but not seriously hurt. His parents were shaken up but also not seriously hurt. To relate this to other “Bar Mitzvah Boys” at the dinner, Frank searched on the computer through the files of local newspapers looking for information about a Florida train wreck sometime early in February 1942. He showed us an article in the newspaper detailing the train wreck.

It was so much fun recalling their formative years, they decided to do it again celebrating their 75 plus one.
