Notes From The Council

November is the month of Thanksgiving, and we are so very thankful for the volunteers and donors who help the Council serve the community of Chebeague Island. • Thank you to the volunteers representing the non-profits across the island who took on summertime shifts at the Chedemption Shed. Not only does this program keep bottles and cans out of the waste stream, it also raises money through Clynk that is then returned to the non-profits. The Bagettes continue to collect and sort bottles in the off season and haul them down to Chandler’s weekly. • Thank you to the generous donors who continue to give to the Fuel Assistance and Good Samaritan Fund. We are ready to help neighbors keep warm through the winter with confidential heating assistance. Thanks to generous donations we continue to host Flu/COVID clinics, the annual Health Fair, special workshops, and visiting doctors and nurses.

• Thank you to the Chebeague Transportation Company for their donation of ferry tickets for us to distribute to neighbors requiring ongoing medical treatment on the mainland. • Thank you to the School House Seconds volunteers who sort, process, and sell donated items for reuse on the island, thereby keeping those items out of the waste stream. The items not sold are then packed up and shipped to the mainland to Preble Street and the Salvation Army. The proceeds from School House Seconds are then used to fund many of the Council’s programs. • Thanks to the volunteers who keep Wednesday Soup going throughout the colder months. Setting up the Hall, cooking soup, baking desserts, and cleaning up are efforts that help our neighbors enjoy delicious food and good company. The Chebeague Island Council is here to help. If you have an idea of how we can do more to support our neighbors, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know.

Maine State Grant: CICA has applied for a grant from the Maine State Housing Program to help increase the number of year-round rental options here on Chebeague. The grant of $840,000 will be used towards building a total of four affordable rental units. Our current plan is to build on two parcels of land: one parcel with a duplex consisting of two three-bedroom structures (units 1 and 2) and a second parcel with a single family home (unit 3) and an accessory dwelling unit (unit 4).

current rental units). While preparing our plans for this project, we came across a Memorandum of Understanding between CICA and the Town of Chebeague. This memo states that this parcel of land would not be further developed and we want to honor that commitment to the Town, so we have decided not to move forward with further building on this land. As a result, we are now exploring other land options that would be suitable for units 3 and 4. While we are looking for alternative parcels of land that we may be able to build on, our hope is to collaborate with an island neighbor willing to donate 1.5 acres of land for the purpose of year-round rental housing on Chebeague. If you have any thoughts or questions about our current projects (or if we may be able to offer helpful information on how to support year round housing efforts on Chebeague), please feel free to reach out to any of our board members. Bill McKenzie, Kel Haney, Bob Earnest, Tracy Calder, Hank Whethem, Virginia Castine, & Ben Yosua-Davis

When applying for the grant, we were in the process of being gifted a parcel of land from Stacie and Toby Webb. As a result, we now own the land needed to build units 1 and 2 and are now beginning to move forward with the plans for that parcel.

Initially, we planned to build units 3 and 4 on a piece of property on School House Road (which neighbors our

NOVEMBER MYSTERY PHOTO

The October 2023 mys tery photo was the Candleberry Tea Room built c. 1926 on land leased from Nellie Hill Hamilton. It stood at the “Green A” - the intersection of North and South Roads - opposite the District 9

Schoolhouse. Sarah Edwards operated the tea room and had a lending library there. The tea room was built by Roy Hill, who apparently financed the operation with a 3-year mortgage of $784 plus interest. The Candleberry Tea Room was one of three tea rooms on Chebeague at that time. The other 2 were located at the East End. Marion Hamilton ran the Ice Cream Parlor and Tea Room across from the Hillcrest. Mina Doughty operat ed the Blue Heron Tea Room on the corner of Back Shore Road. In 1931 Nellie Hill Hamilton sold the building to Sarah Ed wards who soon sold it to the Catholic Church. It was operated as a Catholic Chapel for a time. The building burned in the late 1940s. The lot was owned by the Catholic Church until the Diocese sold it to Bob Libby in 2004, who in turn sold it to the Great Chebeague Golf Club in 2018.

Please help us design the remote workspace at Chebeague Island Library! Our brief May survey showed a need for remote workspace on the island, and the Library received a generous grant to help create the space. Now we’d love your input on what it could look like. Whether you need a place to work, study, read, or just focus on a project, this space will be for everyone, so we’d love to hear from you!

Thanks in advance for completing the survey; it will be open for about a month. It’s anonymous but if you’d like to be entered into a raffle for a $50 gift card there’s an opportunity for that at the end! Scan this QR code with your phone camera for direct access to the survey.
