MOTOR CONTROL CENTRES AND MOTOR PROTECTION

EVALUATE POWER QUALITY WITH NEW POWER QUALITY AND MOTOR ANALYSER F luke, represented in southern Africa by the Comtest Group, has introduced its new Fluke 438-II power quality and motor analyser, cycles (50/60 Hz) of each event detected event, in all modes, without set-up.

• Automatic transient mode captures waveform data at 200 kS/s on all phases simultaneously up to 6 kV. The Fluke 430 Series II power quality analysers are Fluke Connect Compatible, which means that users can view data locally on the instrument, via Fluke Connect mobile app and PowerLog 430-II desktop software. The series is safety rated for industrial ap- plications – 600 V CAT IV/1 000 V CAT III-rated for use at the service entrance and downstream.

Comprehensive protection for hard-working motors THE 320 to 327 M Series of electronic motor pro- tection relays from NewElec provides comprehen- sive protection, which is required by motors running constantly at full load and occasionally beyond their limitations. Motors driving crushers, ball mills or high inertia loads especially with long run-up starting times are ideal applications. The series includes user-friendly door or chassis mounted relays, capable of reliably protecting mo- tors against overloading, phase unbalance, phase loss and user-selectable jam protection trip thresh- olds. The relays can be equipped to intelligently channel high-energy faults such as short circuit or earth faults to the appropriate circuit breaking com- ponent. The 320 to 327M relays incorporate a 4 to 20mA output loop for monitoring the motor load as well as an optional display meter depicting the thermal state of the protected motor. The user only requires five items of information to properly and adequately protect his motor. These are: the maximum load of the motor; the manufacturer’s permissible starts per hour; consecutive starts; the ‘on site’ measured ap- plication starting time; and the safe hot stall time of the machine. Armed with this limited information the user can set up the relay for optimal performance. Additional features include programmed limita- tion to start attempts, alarm outputs for overload- ing and unbalance, as well as user-friendly LED fault diagnosis displays. adding key mechanical measurement capabilities for electric motors to the advanced power quality analysis functions of the Fluke 430 Series II power quality analysers. They measure and analyse key electrical and mechanical performance parameters such as power, harmonics, unbalance, motor speed, torque and mechanical power without the need of mechanical sensors. The 438-II is the ideal portable motor analysis test tool, locating, predicting, preventing, and trou- bleshooting power quality problems in three-phase and single-phase power distribution systems, while giving technicians the mechanical and electrical information needed to effectively evaluate motor performance. • Measure key parameters on direct-on-line mo- tors including torque, RPM, mechanical power and motor efficiency. • Perform dynamic motor analysis by plotting of motor de-rating factor against load according to NEMA guidelines. • Calculate mechanical power and efficiency without the need of mechanical sensors, just connect to the input conductors and you’re ready to go. • Measure electrical power parameters such as voltage, current, power, apparent power, power factor, harmonic distortion and unbalance to identify characteristics that impact motor effi- ciency. • Identify power quality issues such as dips, swells, transients, harmonics and unbalance. • PowerWave data technology captures fast RMS data, and shows half-cycle averages and wave- forms to characterise electrical system dynamics (generator start-ups, UPS switching, etc). • Waveform capture function captures 100/120
