The two desperadoes

JAKE Pearson and Guts Geraghty each accused the other of having betrayed their operation to the police. The Boss knewwho he thought had done it, but he could not prove his suspicion, so he picked up a small black bag and turning to Guts said, "In this bag are one black ball and one white ball. You will put your hand into the bag and take out one ball. If you take out the black ball you die, but if take out the white ball Jake dies. Choose!" Jake was grinning as the Boss said this, and Guts knew that he was in trouble. Turning to the Boss, he said, "I have just one re- quest. I do not wish to be responsible for announcing my own death. When I have taken the ball from the bag, I want Jake to take the other ball and show it to me.When he knows his fate, I will also knowmine" The Boss readily agreed, but Jake turned pale and then tries to run from the room. Why?

Chopping the chocolate

Thirty-four breaks is the smallest number possible. Barry starts with one piece of chocolate. Every time he makes a break, he creates one extra piece of chocolate. This is true whether he breaks a small piece into two, or a large rectangle into two parts. Since he ends up with 35 pieces, he must have made 34 breaks.
