School for style

This is one of the six buildings shortlisted in the RIBA Stirling Prize 2015, the British architecture scene’s equivalent of the Oscars. Built in 2014 using concrete cladding, Burntwood School in London has the air of the light-filled UK schools built in the 1950s and 1960s by Sir Leslie Martin, one of the masters of British architecture. The building you see today is the brainchild of architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, whose projects include the Saatchi Gallery. The school covers an impressive 230,400 sq ft and was completed at a cost of $63.8m. Other buildings on the shortlist include an art gallery, a university library and a cancer care center. The winner will be announced on October 15.
