Museum with a view This is the sixth – and in our humble opinion, the best – in a series of mountaintop museums commissioned by climbing legend Reinhold Messner, the first person to climb Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. Perched on the vertiginous peak of Kronplatz in South Tyrol, Italy, Messner Mountain Museum Corones covers 11,000 sq ft and overlooks the stunning Dolomites and Alps landscapes. Inside are underground galleries that offer glimpses into the lives of mountaineers and climbers – including Messner himself – but the undoubted pièce de resistance is this viewing platform, cantilevered over a valley. Open until October 11, and reopening at the end of November. If you’re arriving by plane, nearby Innsbruck airport accommodates private jets. mmmcorones.com

TAKE THREE/// NEW ART EXHIBITIONS WORTH JETTING TO

Rain that comes and goes, Superman’s home town in sculpture form and a glimpse inside a stellar architect’s mind. Jet off to these US cities and explore our pick of the best newly-opened art exhibitions

1 LOS ANGELES, LACMA One of the most bizarre art installations (and one that caused quite a stir when it showed in New York), Rain Room , uses science and technology to create rain that pauses wherever a human body is detected. Official opening dates are below but members can preview it from October 7. Open November 1 – March 6

2 NEW YORK, Hauser & Wirth In 2007, the late L.A. artist Mike Kelley created a series of highly-imaginative sculptures called Kandors , named after and based on the fictitious birthplace of Superman. The sculptures have been shown in Berlin but never in a US art gallery – until now. Open September 10 – October 24

3 CHICAGO, Art Institute Chicago Retrospective of the work of David Adjaye OBE, the renowned British architect who is rumored to be in the running to design the Barack Obama Presidential Library and Museum. Comprising furniture, houses, public buildings and drawings, the exhibition fills two floors of the Art Institute’s galleries. Open September 19 – January 3
