The 2018 New York Auto Show actually made us give a damn about auto shows.

THE DRIVE

ANNUAL REVIEW This year was the second highest-attended New York Auto Show in its 118-year history with a large jump in public attendance. Helped by an incredible line-up of new vehicle introductions and an increase in media attention, a wide range of important industry events, more than 60 world and North American vehicle debuts, over one million visitors, and with all major manufacturers present, the 2018 New York Auto Show delivered results and bucked every trend.

“Take note of just how many production models were unveiled in the Big Apple this week. There’s a ton of important things to see.”

N o other event has celebrated and promoted mobility and transportation in North America for as long as the New York Auto Show. We are the proud custodians of this heritage and of the automobile dealers who had the foresight to see that a well-organized, centrally located, bigger-is-better motoring event was a great way of marketing cars to potential car buyers. Today, with the help of new technology we are able to successfully amplify this message to new audiences like never before. Located in the nation’s largest DMA for new car sales, the New York Auto Show is uniquely placed to influence a large and diverse car buying population as well as the media organizations that reside here, or who fly in from all over the world to cover the event. This diversity is a big factor in why our media impressions are so large. Stories appear in an enormously wide variety of publications, media outlets and digital sites allowing the message to ‘cut through the clutter’ and provide unprecedented automotive exposure at a time when people are reducing the number of media outlets that they regularly view. Importantly, it is not just the glitzy reveals that get the attention, the beauty of auto shows is that pretty much every automaker has their entire lineup on display, allowing our one million consumers to evaluate them all at their leisure. By combining a consumer-driven event with worldwide media attention, the New York Auto Show has once again proved to be the right format for automakers to present their products to an enormous live and digital audience. With excitement and passion, the driving force behind what motivates people to buy and drive cars, there is no better place than a world-class auto show to make the case! The powerhouse that is social and digital media remains a strategic tool in the New York International Auto Show’s marketing efforts to reach diverse audiences through targeted content and messaging revolving around a consistent campaign. This year’s marketing campaign took on the lightning speed statement of “FORWARD>>FAST,” an opening to the ever-evolving auto industry that never hits the brake and an accelerated New York City that never sleeps. The campaign visual showed a powerful hybrid supercar starting up and lighting up the city. The “FORWARD>>FAST,” campaign set the tone for the Show’s advertising and marketing approach. From it, we developed exciting and interactive content which received the most positive feedback and engagement thus far from any New York International Auto Show campaign.

I N S TA G R A M I nstagram raced to the top as the Show’s fastest growing and most engaging channel. The Stories element became an important content engine and a key destination for users on the platform. We were able to produce and distribute exciting video snippets each day of the Show giving our audience real-time content from the floor.

# S H A R E T H AT R I D E Social Media Challenges were taken to the next level when we announced the “Share That Ride Challenge” on the Show’s social channels. The Show asked its followers to take to the streets with an easy to enter, pre-show digital scavenger hunt. They took photos of specific vehicle types each week that they spotted during their day outside; week 1 was muscle cars, and posted it on their social channels with the Show’s designated hashtag, #NYIAS and #ShareThatRide. The impact of the challenge proved to cut right to the heart of what connects the Show to its followers, a love of cars. It generated 1.9M Social Media Impressions and became a high-performance content generator for the Show, building organic pre-show excitement.

“The New York International Auto Show is traditionally the high-end show in the U.S. season, one where we see a lot of eye candy that only the high rollers will actually get to drive. Not this year: Mainstream, and particularly mainstream SUVs, was the tone of this show.”
