Co-host of 2018 state amateur baseball tourney Spotlight: Joe Schleper Stadium

There’s a place in Shakopee where the crack of the bat and smell of freshly cut grass always brings to mind America’s summer pastime: baseball. This summer, nearly 20,000 fans and players are expected to flock to Joe Schleper Stadium for the 2018 state amateur men’s baseball tournament. Shakopee is co-hosting the 95th annual tournament with New Prague. Sixty-four town teams from around the state will compete in the tournament, which takes place the weekends of Aug. 17-19, Aug. 24-26 and Aug. 31- Sept. 3.

“This tournament is a great opportunity for Shakopee to showcase our awesome baseball park which couldn’t have been built without the commitment and dedication by our city leaders and numerous volunteers,” said organizer Gary Schleper. “We also get to showcase our baseball community, from the great people who live here to the outstanding businesses who support these events.” The city has teamed up with local baseball organizations in recent years on several improvements to get the stadium in top shape. These include field improvements, new scoreboard, lights, seating and fresh paint job.
